I have no idea when Alpaca got added but it's a cash item. You can also shear him for a really weak commerce move speed boost but it takes a lot of shearing.
Not as good as commerce partners for profit and you can only do one or the other but I like the Alpaca because I don't have to worry about likeability.

Perfect New World (published by perfect world is p2w)
Odin Valhalla Rising (published by Kakao, is p2w)
Archeage 2 possibly (published by Kakao, is p2w)
Corepunk (published by nobody cares doa on launch)
      Ashfall (published by see above)

      t. Pierre, we despise Wakfu in France nobody plays that crap.
There is way more content on Dofus, the economy of this game is probably the best you will ever see (depending on the server).
Only downside is that it's hard to pick up for a newbie in 2023, this game is the WoW of France everyone played it, it's full of multi-accounts billionaires minmaxing gays and the leveling is non existant, you just get pled to lvl 200.

I play Final Fantasy XI, and I don't know if I can call it dead, but I hardly see any players outside of cities. And when I do, they are doing their own thing and we never interact. The most interaction I've had in the game is someone seeing my newb (at the time) self and wishing me good luck.

this is how MMOs should be, experience it slowly, enjoy the pace one level at a time. The meme to rush came with the end-game meme

                Anonymous

Part of me wants to rush to the endgame, but I'm just so "fascinated" with how "obtuse" everything is. It's the same feeling I get when I first played Ys I & II Chronicles or the first few Dragon Quest games. I have no idea what I'm doing or where I'm going. I have to be proactive and talk to random NPCs just to get some idea of what to do. It feels like an adventure in the sense that the game requires me to be autonomous rather than twist my head in a direction with a huge quest marker saying "GO HERE!" There are some hints, but the game is vague enough that it forces me to figure things out on my own to a certain extent.

                Anonymous

I enjoy that aspect too. I mostly followed quest guides when going through the game, because finding that random, unmarked "???" in a huge zone gets really tiresome. However, some quests I deliberately tried to do with no help, and that was some of the most fun I've had, just exploring the maps and figuring it out on my own.

Action combat has never worked in an MMORPG because the average player has 150ms ping. Adding more server locations doesn't fix the problem when you don't have enough players.
slow combat system = less servers = active MMO even with a small small userbase
Unfortunately most of them are designed to be singleplayer games for solo players so they can have the flashy combat system that looks good in the trailer.

      Anonymous

      It worked great in TERA.
The problem in general is that it's running a server with ~200 people online playing, and this is if they separate the world zones.
So even if you have ~15 ms ping, the server is going to cater to those with ~200 ms ping and make your experience shittier.

Wouldn't instance combats like Wakfu/ JRPGs work?
That'd also be fine to do great turn based combat like Open XCOM.
In any case EverQuest and WoW atrocious combat killed the genre in it's infancy, what a shame.

        Anonymous

        >Wouldn't instance combats like Wakfu/ JRPGs work?
It already works just fine, just look at Vindictus.
The problem is that these are not MMOs anymore. Sure, by definition they could be an MMO, but they don't have the experience of coming by someone out in the wild getting smacked by mobs and coming to help them and making a friend. Or coming across someone doing the same quest and asking to party, and going through the game together. You instead have the experience of a lot of solo instances of which you need someone else to know you're on a certain part of the content in order to participate beforehand. Chance encounters, which is the heart and soul of MMORPGs, are thrown to the wind on instanced games.

          Anonymous

But Vindictus is not a MMO. Again the example of what I ask would be Wakfu, if Wakfu had good combat, and good action combat in particular like a fighting game or an arena shooter.

          Anonymous

There's nothing massive about MMOs anymore. Wikis killed MMOs' sense of scale, datamining and streaming killed MMOs' sense of mystery, and guides killed MMOs' sense of freedom, social media and developer bad faith killed MMOs' sense of community. There isn't much difference between open world exploration and instanced dungeon selection lobbies because all the abstract gameplay concepts that are lost with instancing are dead anyway.

        Anonymous

Doesn't wakfu have like two or three servers because their combat system is turn based and ping is never an issue?

I mean not really. They usually curtail p2w and try to foster a small community for a game that was either dead or dying. La Tale is a good example of that.

I've seen a video about it. Apparently characters can just start at level 300 or so? The whole design of the game seems geared towards hanging around and just casually grinding, to the point where there's a class dedicated to putting up a camp to buff equipment and gain passive recovery bonuses. But who is going to bother with the grind from level 1 outside just the morbid curious? I couldn't even convince people to join in, since they'd obviously ask the question about why grind from Lv.1 when you start at Lv.300.

I'll probably try it out anyway, just to see how stuff like the shieldbasher and cryomancer builds actually work in the game. Starting that high level does mean that I should be able to put together builds easily. I might even start up from Lv.1 as well, since smacking enemies and watching them go pop was fairly satisfying. At least I could see what the developers made that was left for dead.

Yeah, and they can clear dungeons with a scroll
Keep in mind, this is a game that was designed to have 3 different support classes made for parking in a field, making a camp, and gaining EXP from people fighting monsters nearby. Now, nobody uses them.

I feel like game devs are obsessed with the "game" part of it like they're making a single player that happens to be massively online. In reality, the social and grinding aspects are more important. The game has to have enough to do without constant content drops through grinding and has to be comfy for social/ERP purposes, which is a lot of what people do in these games.

        True

        This.
The genuine hate over 'coomers' or anyone who just wants to have fun with RP online is a massive scourge than even the class trinity. MMO devs who genuinely think they can keep their social experience purely platonic and disconnecting while also advertising it as a role playing game online with other people.
First MMO that puts in sex aspects would rake in dough.

Yeah I don't get it. It's basically e-sex with a human, not cooming to pictures or porn, and sex is part of social life. They think they can make an sterilized social experience which just makes it cold and unfun, so people play their single player games because why not? What's the difference? They don't even have to put in explicit sex aspects, just make it comfortable with housing and social areas with a functional chat system that encourages RP.

          >They think they can make an sterilized social experience which just makes it cold and unfun
And this is true for everything besides sex, as well.
When was the last time a cooking skill in a game was used to make food for a party that wasn't just a powerup? Or a social job in an MMO was something you could use with other people outside of combat?

Some of my best friends I made fishing in Runescape. Most games now discourage trying to fish around other people. Or having social interaction at all.

What would classify as a "MMORPG" in terms of gameplay by the standards of these posts? I'm not trying to troll or bait, I'm honestly curious. My only reference for MMORPGs are Korean F2Ps (P2Ws), which to my knowledge generally tried to copy WoW's success.

I've never played a KMMO but I think as a baseline an MMO should be, essentially, hostile to the player. A lone player should feel vulnerable and helpless because the entire point of an MMO is to band together and form new friendships to overcome problems. That also means forcing players to actually engage with that dangerous world rather than fast traveling around. That curates the kind of game where a high level player will be passing through and see a lowbie in danger, and they'll stop to help because they remember what that was like. And then a new friendship is made.

Yes. Real MMOs haven't been a thing for ages, so nobody who would be working on MMOs today would remember that this was once the basic idea, though.

and that's why we need more sandbox PvP MMORPGs like Eve or Albion. You can't run out of content when there is no endgame or vertical progression that's making old content obsolete as you "play through" it.

I used to play Wildstar and TERA before they shut down. I really liked Wildstar a lot and miss it dearly.

I tried playing WoW, Classic, and XIV, but at the end of the day all anyone wants to do is raid log so I always end up playing alone for 99% of the time I'm online, and when it's time to raid I've gotta sit in discord with a bunch of homosexuals who care more about parsetroony shit than just simply beating the boss or people b***hing about loot because muh bis.

Literally? Hellgate: London. Brought from the dead as a SP-only game, heavy grinding and huge empty levels included.

I need more dead MMORPGs lazily retroffited as a SP game. I love grinding in complete solitude.

Honestly for me Blue Protocol is the last hope for me that I have for MMORPGs. The social aspects of the game + forcing players to interact via. zone grinding + long leveling experience. Every MMO nowadays just feels like it's either made by people that haven't played a lot of MMOs; or for people that don't even like MMOs.

That's just marketing fluff to attract a playerbase. If you played the betas in JP it's the opposite. There is a story for the game as it's a Bandai game.
