Do you prefer Party based RPGs or RPGs designed around a solo protagonist first then gets party members later?

party based RPGs with a cast of characters that doesn't rotate out. each person can fill whatever role is necesssary, and it's up to you to decide who is the cute white mage.
I prefer solo.
classless solo is my favorite.
An RPG where you start out alone but can build up your party to include dozens of named members and hundreds of nameless soldiers.
So far only Mount & Blade and Crusader Kings do this.
Man, I'd kill for an official Fantasy M&B/CK game.
i prefer to choose, like in kingmaker where you can create your own mercenary party members or use optional pre-built characters with sidequests
>you can choose between premade companions or custom companions
So uhhh, companions are not optional then.
Party.
Former.
Depends on the game. For most turn based games I like party based with no self inserts. For games like Kingmaker and Pillars and Baldurs Gate I like starting alone and collecting people you want to.
For CRPGs overwhelmingly solo protagonist.
For JRPGs overwhelmingly party oriented. (with the notable exception of japanese action rpgs)
This preference grows exponentially the newer the game is.
I can't stomach modern (post-2005 or thereabouts) western CRPG companions in any way, shape or form.
For crpgs I like party-based gameplay but not banter-and-sidequest oriented companions.
no party members at all ever. they always suck and are written moronic.
dogmeat is ok tho.
Solo cause party is always to smol
Solo with episodic appearances of the hero's friends and allies.
Because whenever you do something wild, either your companions ignore it against their beliefs or you refrain from playing how you want to play to not lose companions, reputation points etc.
also, I hate min-maxing, it's ridiculous in most cases
Unless it's multiplayer, solo makes more sense for an rpg. You can't RP as a squad but a character.
Party or solo-only from the onset.
I usually prefer to just control one dude the whole time, OP. Controllable protagonist with AI teammates is usually the worst option.
Solo RPGs are superior, you can't roleplay as a group of people; team based RPGs provide an estrategic element I guess but that's not really what RPGing is about in the end.
Blobbergays get the rope.
If you think about it, in most RPGs the reason why most companions join the party are stupid.
>Oh, you made a fetch quest for me? I guess I will have to follow you to the end of the world to defeat an anciel evil now
And it gets more ridiculous the more of these gays you have, like, at the end of the gane your party will be composed of very dispair and excentric characters with no cohesion whatsoever, more than a group of merceneries it always ends up looks like a fricking circus.
Baldur's gate killed the RPG scene, what can I say? I wish there was an RPG where you could just hire generic NPCs, like a mercenary that's just a mercenary for hire, random facegen and all, and only after having spend some time with it, an emergent storytelling mechanic gives some personality to it depending on the experiences you had.
Doesn't dragon's dogma do this?
If the party consists of quiet professionals who are there to get the job done, then fine. If they are there to turn the game into fricking 90 day fiance, then solo.
this
although I'd have probably said big bang theory or some other trash TV sitcom since romance isn't the only problem with companion cancer
party with synergistic class abilities
Solo with no character building, as in you can just work on one character and they could potentially do everything > Party > Solo with character building.
I just really hate "replay" value in games. It usually doesn't make the game more replayable, it just means I'm locked out of content.
Solo with mercenaries. "Party members" with their "personalities" and "banter" can go die in a fire.
I remember when I was a kid and companions didn't have any banter. I thought I wanted more.
>be careful what you wish for
Now I miss uncomplicated, loyal and helpful characters like Taghor and Dohrum.
>EoB series
>uncomplicated, loyal and helpful characters
I like the LISA formula where every character is so fricking weird that you can never tell who will be a party member until you’ve already gotten them.
I prefer RPGs without any party members at all. Just some good old fashioned solo adventuring.
I prefer party based. Solo is fine, but if it's solo, it's always more fun to stay solo so the party stuff feels wasted. For example, playing Elona with a party just isn't fun because they'll just do their own thing, and they might die doing their own thing. I don't want to have to micromanage them so they don't do something stupid.
Customizable protag for me.
Companions with personalities but I can modify all their class and stats and gear, or at least a lot of it.
Mainly because devs never put any time into party meta anymore and I hate playing substandard premades.
Party-based. Action solo-based where the hero is flying and swinging around like a coked-up raccoon somehow looks even worse than turn-based.
