I believe history and modern life has a lot to learn from each other. What stops us from combining the more natural and human aspects of the medieval era, and today's technological achievement? I grew up in probably one of the last farming societies in Europe, and by the time I moved into the city life for my education the quality of my life both physically and mentally took a swift turn downwards. Just give me a motherfricking solarpunk world damn it

Did you not know anon? Happiness was invented in 1760 as a byproduct of the industrial revolution. Before that everyone was depressed and died instantly when they hit 20.

Including infant mortality in the calculations for 'average life expectancy' and then spreading around the resulting completely useless number as cast-iron fact is one of the dumbest fricking things ever.

This Black person gets it. Means are worthless for most things when looking at representative examples. Medians are where it's at, especially when it's going to be a bimodal distribution like medieval life expectancy.

The fact that there are moronic people who think this was the case shouldn't be allowed to post on the internet.

When you consider how far humanity has come technology-wise, it is almost maddening that our lives still require us to work labor 5 days a week.

All we've really attained is multiplying our numbers by a significant amount.

It's because of the size of the population. If you were living with your wife on your own farm on your own island, you probably wouldn't have to work too much because you're only working for your family and not society.

Imagine if your suburban neighborhood was like a village. Everybody out walking around and, on your street, there was a butcher shop, tailor, and other tradesman shops. Mom sent me out to go buy nails from the blacksmith.

Life in my country wasn't too far off from this back in the 90's. It's a quaint but incredibly dull life.

I fricking love getting the common cold and then succumbing and dying to a mere fever cause there's absolutely no way to treat it aside from hoping your body just manages to fight through it by sheer force of preservation alone. Goddamn I so fricking wish I would be a poor serf that gets raped and killed the moment someone decides to raid the village I live in or conquer the lands of my current lord. So fricking hype epic and amazing, oh my god, things used to be so much simpler and comfier back then. 🙂

yeah i dont know how people still have such a romantic view of the middle ages. if you want to life a serf lifestyle you can always just go volunteer/become a monk at a monastery and do errands all day and attend church while still having access to modern medicine if needed.

They imagine themselves either being the nobles or some type of similar middle class citizens like in current day that would have access to more advanced shit. Like, the closest you'd get to that and being somewhat more independent is if you happened to live in a free imperial city probably as a citizen that just has his own business selling leather made shoes or some shit like that instead of having to plough the fields.

Cities before basic sanitation sound fricking nightmarish. Oh boy I sure hope this filthy well water I'm forced to drink doesn't cause me to literally shit myself to death.

You wouldn't be aware of such things, not until it'd be too late anyways. And not like this doesn't happen nowadays.

Yeah but if I shit myself for a week straight I can drag my fetid ass to a hospital and they'll quizzically ask "but how did you get cholera bro?"

And that's that, your reality. The hospital, the questions, that's your life. 600 years ago, your life would be short, but it'd be yours nevertheless.

They weren't aware of the alternatives, just like we aren't aware of them now. People are products of their time.

I don't imagine anything but the time itself. The towns, the sky, the birds. And death, death is unavoidable anyways. That's life.

I've never needed serious medical treatment for anything in my life. Have you tried having an immune system?
