Anyone who wants Knuckles or Shadow over Eggman is out of their mind or just simply wants someone too similar to Sonic. Eggman is based and the potential for his character in Smash is kind of endless actually. It would be interesting to see how exactly they even design his character. Would he be in his flying craft? Would he be in a smaller version of the death egg robot? Maybe he wouldn't even be in one of his machines at all. my guess though is he'd be in the flying hover craft and it would borrow attacks from his various Genesis games.
Or he could be a heavy version of Bowser Jr. Have his standard eggmobile and pull some tricks out of his ass.

At least Brawl has personality, and it has the perfect roster and soundtrack. I know you're gonna say "well Sm4sh and Ultimate have more characters" but that's just the thing, all the Fire Emblem shit makes the roster feel bloated and unbalanced. Brawl's roster is perfect because there's just the right amount of characters from each series, and there aren't stupid additions like Wii Fit Trainer and a Piranha Plant. And the soundtrack is fantastic.

Not only does Sakura like Metal Gear, he's friends with Kojima too. Kojima is the one who asked for Snake to be in Smash. They didn't have enough time for the Melee days, but he got in for Brawl.

I think it's a symptom of the Echo fighter concept being really underutilized. Shadow is the perfect echo fighter for Sonic. My theory is that the next smash is going to make up for having a lot of characters cut by having more echoes.

It was completely a miracle Sonic got in Brawl when 06 killed his image. And even SEGA knew this, that's why Sonic was literally last second for this very reason as they feared Sonic's image would sour the relation with Nintendo only until it was clear as day fans wanted Sonic in Smash so they backpadeled and let Sakurai add him in. Seriously, SEGA is weird to this day so I don't expect anything less from them.

Classic Sonic bossfights suck dick. You are basically invincible because you can keep picking up the ring you drop. Silver Sonic and Metal Sonic were one of the few good bossfights in classic Sonic.
The only times he has a homing attack is when he can get it from other characters (Heroes, Advance 3) or when it's a universal mechanic (Rivals, Dash).
It's very clearly not meant to be a Knuckles thing, it's just something he inherits sometimes for gameplay convenience. Having one of his few attacks in Smash be a homing attack is fricking moronic and lazy.

There are barely any new character mods for Ult because current method for doing so involves some complicated and limiting frickery with existing character slots. You're not gonna get anything really polished for a very long time, given modders haven't even been able to add so much as a 9th costume slot yet.

I know with 100% certainty my friend campaigned for Knuckles during the ballot, and is probably partially responsible for that assist trophy. Shadow not getting an echo spot is so weird. Like the moment they revealed the concept of echo fighters EVERYONE was saying "Ken and Shadow" like it was surest thing. You could not fricking separate the two.
I just don't think there's any passion for Sonic among the development team. They'll go through what they need to in order to get an appropriate amount of representation, but he only has 1 remix after being in since Brawl. His second stage was just another Green Hill that acted as promotion for a mediocre title. As iconic as SA2 is, it also has a strong argument for being Shadow's only good game. Sega and Sonic Team themselves also have severe fear of Sonic's extended cast. It's not like Richter where there were probably still a few people at Konami happy to offer the character up and had few restrictions for his use.
