Why are they like this? Why can't they just accept that handhelds usually have 9 to 10 year lifespans? The Gameboy Advance, the DS, and the 3DS all had 9 year long lifespans, regardless of game releases. Why's it so hard for them to just accept the switch, a HANDHELD, having about the same thing? Its selling insanely well, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is still selling like its a NEW FRICKING GAME, they wouldn't just release a new console next year when the system is doing this well. just so you know, the Switch has already surpassed the PS2's launch aligned sales by like 12m units. It's actually a pretty easy comparison unlike the PS4 with aligned holidays because they literally launched 17 years (minus one day) apart.
This IS the point where the PS2 started slowing down saleswise, though. Ironically, the early models being easy to hack to get free games also lines up.

That all depends on whether they keep producing the old console or not. PS4 only died because Sony stopped producing it, I'd honestly buy one if they were still on the market for ~$200 new. Well here's your chart for reference*, Quarter by Quarter. Switch took off from COVID on and hasn't tapered off yet although PS2 didn't until about 2009 as the PS3 took off. All depends on when the next Nintendo system launches. Keeping at about 4M sales a quarter it would happen in 2 years, if it tapers out then maybe 3 or 4 years but if a new system launches that invalidates Switch then it's done.
My guess is Switch will sell another 10-15M+ up 30 June 2024 but if a new system is out by then, it will go down to 8-10M. After that up to 30/6/25 it's 5-10M depending on if a new system is out. From this the range would be 143-154M units in the next 2 years putting it above the DS but just below PS2. If there's some surprise release like Prime 4 or a new 3D Mario/Splatoon/AC/other on Switch by then that might help, same for a price decrease.
*starting calendar Q1 2017/2020 as both systems launched the same time in the year, at least in Japan.

200-300 for a console isn't that bad of price now compared to 500 for a console or the 700+ for a solid GPU. The cost of a PS2 in 2000 is relatively higher for its time.
Then you have to think in terms of gamers per capita in a way. Like for NES gaming was seen as a kids to teens activity you grew out of and many Gen X of the time stopped gaming one day. So not a lot of gaming people in their 20s and nearly none as you hit 30s with disposable income. PS2 time frame anyone too far past college age was a lot less likely to buy this outside the occasional cool divorced dad type.
Compare to now 200 bucks for the cheapo Switch cost less than a shitty phone and everyone old enough to walk to earlier 40s practically plays or played something occasionally so its a way wider market with way lower barrier to enter now.
This isn't even fanboying the PS2 (I think it rode the PS1 coat tails for its initial success personally), but SNES, NES, PS1 would all appear different if you look at those in the lense of what % of gaming population did they cover relative to their entry point price adjusted for inflation (and inflation with electronics is fricked because money devalues but also tech gets cheaper to make so its a wonky curve)
Bought my PS2 because AC2 was a launch title, I still say PS2 rode the PS1 wave but holy frick those Armored Core games were amazing.
