I have almost my entire steam library on an external HDD I access multiple times daily. Games run perfectly fine. I'll use SSD where necessary, but for the most part there's literally no point (apart from the OS obviously). I've said it before, but SSD's mainly benefit games with poor optimisation.

        Anonymous

        hey alright.

      Anonymous

It's not lightning, it's magnetism. For discs, you essentially you have an enormous amount of tiny sections of the disk (only a few hundred nanometers in size) that are either magnetized N>S or S>N. One is interpreted as 1 and the other is 0. These are known as bits and it's up to the other components of the hard drive and computer to interpret what said 1s and 0s mean in a given sequence.
In solid state drives (flash memory) an electrical current is applied to a floating gate (a silicone-based semiconductor) to indicate whether or not electrons should be allowed to pass through the gate, indicating whether it is a 1 or 0. The binary data is then interpreted by the PC using the same method as discs. In simple terms, since a SSD uses no moving parts their data can be read faster by the PC than it can be from a disc which is physically limited by how fast the disc can spin.

HDD, the reliable tried and true technology. Have fun having your memory blocks degrade and go out one by one. I don't have ADHD so I don't mind waiting 3 seconds instead of 1 second. The only game that exists that requires SSD is Star Citizen.

This. My first SSD that I bought 14 years ago still works to this day and is in use as my dad's OS drive on his laptop. Every SSD I've ever owned still works to this day. Pretty much any modern SSD you buy these days is going to last a stupid amount of time unless you're running a server or something.

Thats impressive. I had a Toshiba SSD for OS and small games, WD HDD for big games/misc. Toshiba went out within warranty, got a new one. Eventually that one went out too. Used the HDD as my main drive and eventually that went out as well. Honestly 7200rpm is perfectly fine for gaming, but there's no real reason for them with how cheap SSDs are now.

Fallout 4 was the game that made me switch back in the day. On my old 7200RPM HDD the load times were so fricking slow, especially if you left your character in the fricking city. Switching to a SSD cut load times like 80%, it was wild. Other than that, there wasn't a huge difference in most games until the current gen. Using a HDD with current gen games is fricking unplayable. The hugest difference is outside of playing when you're modding and you're dealing with massive gigabytes of files and patchers and extracting zip files. Things that took like 30 minutes to do before now suddenly take like a few minutes.

said. And it's a really cheap Kingston too.
Most of the reason I haven't upgraded to better SSDs is because those typically require you to change your motherboard to have compatible shit like NVME if you want anything higher than 0,5GB/s and motherboards are more expensive.

SSDs are goyslop for ADHD zoomers who are addicted to instant gratification.

Only boomers and millenials understand the true kino of waiting for loading times, or hearing your hard drive "thinking".

It also made death in video games far more impactful since you knew that if you fricked up you'd have to wait 5 hours for the level to load again and alone with your thoughts pondering where did it all go wrong.

NVme ssd's are super cheap right now.

Get a 970 Evo Plus 1tb for less than $50.

Be careful picking one with DRAM cache. A Samsung 990 without dram cache is 10x worse than a 970 Evo Plus with a 1GB DRAM cache.

Cache full = file transfer speed drops to 20mb/s which is at least 3x slower than a mechanical drive.

    Simple chart:

    Samsung 990 = No DRAM = TRASH.
    Samsung 990 Pro = 1gb DRAM = Good.
    Samsung 990 Evo = 1gb DRAM = Good.

    Samsung 980 = No DRAM = TRASH.
    Samsung 980 Pro = 1gb DRAM = Good.
    Samsung 980 Evo = 1gb DRAM = Good.

    Samsung 970 = No DRAM = TRASH.
    Samsung 970 Pro = 1gb DRAM = Good.
    Samsung 970 Evo = 1gb DRAM = Good.
    Samsung 970 Evo Plus = 1gb DRAM = Good.

I also use HDD for torrents ect. But remember if you have a single HDD in your pc, it will slow your pc boot speed by at least 10 seconds. Bios wont post until HDD has finished spinup, there is no way around it.

over provisioning is all done on the drive itself. ssds have come leaps and bounds since the 00s and take care of themselves. generally you leave some free space on a drive for things like 'insurance' for bad sectors (mech hdds) and op for ssds but that's handled by the drive itself. seriously its not the 00s anymore you don't have to walk on eggshells for ssds anymore.

"the internet never forgets" is a common misconception. The only things the internet never forgets is the things YOU specifically don't want it to remember. Everything else will either eventually be paywalled to high heaven or simply lost media. Yes, even that one doujin you've read numerous times because it hits all your favorite tags will eventually be gone unless you make sure to archive it yourself.

If you like it then save it. And remember to do backups every once in a while.

I have a 500GB SATA SSD + 1TB HDD. I run my OS and multiplayer games on the SSD (GTA V, CS II) and any new release slop that requires an SSD (Cyberpunk 2077). On the HDD I keep all the older games or easy to run 2D games like (Terraria, Stardew Valley, The Witcher, Fallout, Elder Scrolls, Dragon Age, Mass Effect, Knights of the Old Republic, etc.)

HDD is objectively perfectly fine for every game that launched before 2020/PS5. Sadly every game post 2020 and optimized for PS5's SSD speed cannot run well on HDDs. The fake loading screens in stuff like Spider-Man or God of War or Cyberpunk or anything modern absolutely rape HDDs and make the games unplayable.

My OS + All the programs I use take up less than 50GB. I don't need anything but one 1TB SSD. I delete the games once I 100% them and they have no multiplayer. And all my photos and uni/work related things are saved on Google Drive. There is literally no need for any HDD "storage', it's obsolete in 2023. Streaming services and piracy exists, and my fast internet speeds gets me whatever I want in minutes.

You could not have been more wrong now. Piracy sites and media sharing websites are slowly dying, torrents with dead seeds, streaming has edited content or of shitty quality, or even doesn't exist. We now have more services that are fully online where you can't even own the things you buy.

Maybe you don't care about this stuff because it personally doesn't affect you, but anyone savvy enough should realize where we're headed and do their due diligence in case the internet becomes even more restricted than before.

I mean, what is the alternative you propose? Say that the greedy israelites turn on us and take away all our data and we lose all the cloud backups like Google Drive. Do you not realize that we'd have bigger issues then, like the fact that at that point our government would also either have to be completely lost and submissive to corpos or be completely tyrannical and controling of us? You saving some meme games and videos on your HDDs is not preventing it in any way, the only way you could be preventing it is through activism in which you try to convert normal people to trust them less, but you have obviously no intention or capability of that when you just lash out at normal people for wanting convenience and not caring about grim post apocalyptic future scenarios.

I have no reason to because it's inconvinient. I use tech to help me with daily life, my life does not revolve around tech. Having my uni/work related stuff accessible at all times on my g-drive is very important to me, otherwise I'd have to carry a USB stick with me at all times and bother with copy pasting everything manually. I also don't want to risk HDD failiure when I use steam for cloud save and game backups which is much more convenient on my one SSD. And I can't avoid spyware since I need social media and a phone to stay in touch with my work, uni, family, friends, and gf. It's literally not possible for me to lead your lifestyle unless I became a hermit. You need to find alternatives that don't make people society outcasts by refusing to participate in anything that other people do.

My SSD in theory is about 100x faster than my HDD, but this is reflected in games with only slightly faster loadings, often not even 2x faster. The experience hardly changes at all for me, at least for the games I'm used to playing, I notice sometimes that a loading screen was a bit faster than on the HDD but that's it, I get about 30 seconds less loading for every 1 hour of gameplay which isn't even significant.
One anon explained that Windows is partly to blame and that there is something called DirectStorage that will "revolutionize" the speed of games, especially for nvme SSDs, but until that happens SSDs despite being better is nowhere near being the revolution I thought it would be for gaming.

      Anonymous

Same here. I don't know if my old HDD was dying, but Windows used to take about 2 minutes to open and then another 5 minutes before it was usable because the disk was at 100%. all the time and you couldn't do anything... After installing an nvme SSD, Windows boots up and is completely ready for use in like 10 seconds.
Unfortunately the same effect doesn't happen in games. I was hoping that a loading time of 1 minute would be reduced to 5 seconds or something, but that is not how it happens, what used to take 1 minute will take about 40 seconds now hopefully...

Loading speed mostly depends on what files are used in any given environment which have to be loaded to apply textures, collisions, maps, behavior etc. basically everything that's going to be used in a given level.
SSDs are great but games haven't advanced all that much, and lately the trend is for AAAs to make really sloppy, unoptimized messes and then leave the burden of running the spaghetti monstrosity to the user. Starfield demanding SSDs is a poor omen as a result and it could very well be a No Man's Sky situation where most of the loading is used on wide stretches of nothing important.

HDD is objectively better for video games. Contrary to mainstream opinion loading times are barely affected so long as you invest enough into the HDD. It's just different forms of the same technolgy.
