Outside of indie games Japan feels like the only part of the industry where creative concepts actually manifest. Yes Japanese games have their tropes, but the stagnation in settings and ideas is nowhere near as bad as the West.

Western titles don’t respect the basis of the medium as much. I don’t even disagree with this wholeheartedly, but a common movie game comparison is between Metal Gear Solid and the Last of Us. The reason MGS1 is a far better movie game is because it took advantage of the medium in memorable and unique ways. Psycho Mantis, the torture sequence, the Hind-D, looking on the back of the fricking box the game came with to get a frequency for your codec, etc.
Many said Last of Us could’ve worked just as well if it was a show. When we got one this year… yeah, it was critically acclaimed and the stuff lost was just some content regarding the story itself.
I generally believe JP games are as well as most JP media nowadays, so hmm

Because of arcades, the Japanese in the early 1990s were probably at least a decade ahead of the rest of the world in most genres.
Today, I don't think that's the case anymore, the Japanese are no longer at the forefront, but because they were basically the inventors of modern video games, there's still a lot of quality coming from there.

How is Metroid japanese?
I used to play western games when they were still good. Not my fricking fault they're all mostly garbage nowadays. Look at cRPGs, there was NOTHING in between Dragon Age Origins and Baldur's Gate 3 in the fantasy genre. Everything was subpar or had a lot of BUTs attached. That's 14 fricking years.
Meanwhile nips continued to make good game one after another in genres I like.
