Does anybody know why this guy's psychic-type?
It's based on hake consumption in spain, but nothing about that seems particularly psychic to me.
Doesn't seem like GF to toss a random type on a fish just to keep it from being mono-water.

considering it cuts away its own body it would have made more sense to be ghost type
i wish it actually looked like fishbones and they weren't such suckups to china
Mind over matter, having the fortitude to strip its flesh off
Doing so actually makes it faster too. If has been reduced to a skeleton, it would need some sort of ability, say psychic powers, for it to still swim, let alone swim even faster.
She's a psycho.
I understood it had something to do with this weird behavior that hakes do where they sleep straight up while floating in the water. The Pokémon itself doesn't do it and that trait doesn't sound very psychic to me, but I remember it was something one of the riddlers or somebody in their periphery used to explain it But I've never seen evidence that's actually a thing
It’s psychic type because it’s purple
chad comment
Chud comment. It's grey. It should be steel.
you guys are morons, purple+gray=ghost
Because it gets stronger when it parts from its flesh
Why not?
But the dex entry indicates that it abandons its flesh for increased psychic awareness much like Mega Alakazam.
Question is why they chose to make this particular pokemon psychic, since pokemon types are usually somehow related to what the Pokemon's based on.
For the exact reason that anon stated.
If by anon you mean
that's circular logic, since the question is why the Pokemon was designed to be a psychic type in the first place, as opposed to just being a normal water-type or maybe ghost
seems possible, but it could be that they just wanted to give it a reason to shed it's flesh since it's food-related and tied that into a mind-over-matter thing, but that's pretty indirect if so.

Are you deliberately ignoring the second line of his post?
Didn't tie in the in-game explanation to what gamefreak based it on IRL, which is the point of this thread
I forgot this thing existed. Gen 9 has some of the most forgettable designs
Every decision made for SV is questionable
Psychic is the type most associated with healing, and it can heal back all its flesh after it throws it off.
No its not. Name one psychic-type recovery move
Heal Pulse.
Does it heal yourself like that stupid looking whats-its-name-I-completely-forgot fish?
Rest.
No u.
