Does anyone else find it bizarre how good the Ys 1 and 2 remake is compared to what Squeenix offers for Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy, the biggest JRPG series? Ys Chronicles, available on all possible platforms, offers some of the most beautiful pixel art known to man, the original OST in addition to two new sets of great renditions and even more difficult and engaging gameplay, whereas your best option for most early DQs are either 30 year old SNES remakes you have to pirate or ugly ass casualised remakes exclusive to phones, which the FF remakes also were until Pixel Remaster came out. The Ys 1 and 2 remakes put them to shame.

It could be that Ys 1 at the least is a very short game with a load of reused environments, not much dialog, quests or (any?) side objectives. The majority of the length every time I replay it often comes down to Dark Fact or that bat boss.
Ys 2's a bit longer but not as long as I recall any DQ or FF been although my memory's very spotty on this. Again the majority of the time I've spend in Ys 2 was navigating that fricking shrine area at the end.
>Lots of fat americans doing great sprite artwork for free
>SE can't even pay a few of those to do new high resolution sprites
instead they hired the original artist lady to redraw all her old sprites
get fricked burgerfat
Ys Chronicles just reused the graphics from Ys Eternal (1998).
all remakes are trash
however as a developer, it's an unassailable fact that doing bitmap fonts for modern retro-aesthetic-style games is a pain in the ass when you have to deal with foreign languages, people's dumbass unicode screennames, etc, so sometimes it's just not worth it to do anything but add in a fullblooded opentype font renderer
you may hate it but if people see unreadable ass text in your screenshots they're just gonna keep swiping past, and some of us have to put food on the table
>is a pain in the ass when you have to deal with foreign languages
>giving a frick what third-worlders think who were just going to pirate your game anyway
I can tell you've never run a business before.
I can tell you've never run before.
>It's really hard to do work which people have been doing for years with worse tools and tighter budgets, sometimes even for free 🙁
You're just a homosexual working a fake job so your boss can make money if that's the case
Now read the post again and return to Ganker once you are 18.
Which Final Fantasy remakes? There's a ton of them.
I played through the Pixel Remasters and found them to be the definitive versions of each game. I have yet to play through VI so I cannot judge. And II had some fricking bullshit with the Coeurls being totally OP with paralysis which I do not recall from Dawn of Souls. However, aside from those small nigglings and the meh decision to standardize menus and items across all of them, they were absolutely wonderful. They looked good and the soundtracks were incredible. I feel like the complaints about them are incredibly inane and that these are the best releases SE has had since TWEWY
FFVI PR is weird because they don’t alter the art style as much as the previous five, so it breaks the consistency the game had up to that point
>FFVI PR is weird because they don’t alter the art style as much as the previous five
The last time they altered the art style in FF6 it.... was not good. Remember this abomination?
Resting b***h face terra
it's canon
They look like pastel vomit with adobe flash menus.
The one on the left is ugly as frick. So is the right one, but my point is that you could have picked a much better example.
how is it ugly as frick? malding ff cuck lmao
>so is the right one
>yatta
I've never heard of ys.
What games of this series are worth to play? The remaster's the definite version, I assume?
Most are worth playing. My favorite is Ys Origin because it is mostly action, less jrpg. Oath in Felghana is great, Ys I & II Chronicles+ are great.
Good, finally something to play.
For whatever reason I skipped re revelations back in the day, so I'm playing that rn.
It's decent ngl
Is Ys as good as ff4 or 6?
All of them in order, though I'm biased. I personally enjoy the pc engine cd version of I&II, has that cool 90s anime aesthetic with my preferred version of the soundtrack.
Is that version on gog?
I would gladly pay for my video games, why yes, I do pay gladly. I help government subsidised conglomerates whenever I can.
All of those games are on Steam and GOG
homie why did you buy that many what if you end up not liking them... Buy Napishtim as well, you are supposed to play it after 1, 2 and Felghana
I was asking if the 90s anime aesthetic version (pc engine) is on gog or some weird remaster.
Thx for naphishtim.
Haven't bought anything, yet. Making a list.
Typo
>if the 90s anime aesthetic version (pc engine) is on gog or some weird remaster
I don't know what that anon meant by 90s anime aesthetic because Ys Eternal/Complete has that as well. It came out in the late 90s and the version you see on GoG (Ys I+II Chronicles) pretty much uses the same graphics except you have to set the character portraits and music to 'Complete' instead of 'Chronicles' in the options menu. Both PCE and Complete (the one on GOG/Steam) versions are 90s anime aesthetic, albeit different. I prefer the latter because it has that nice, almost doujinsoft-like, late 90s Japanese Windows game vibe. Also this remake has the most fun version of bump combat if you ask me, pure joy to run around and slash stuff
Complete doesn't have the PCE artwork or music. It even has animated graphics w/ voice over but I won't force anybody to play it.
Thx for that. X came out half a year ago.
OK, I habe the 90s version of ys 1 and 2, ys origin, y8 and 9 and oath of felg.
Where's the difference between ys chronicles and ys chronicles +?
Sigh... Falcom really shouldn't have used those stupid confusing names
So
>Chronicles is the PSP port of Eternal/Complete and doesn't have the classic border used in many Japanese computer RPGs
>Chronicles also uses more modern character art
>Chronicles has a new soundtrack
>Chronicles+ is just Eternal/Complete with the option to switch between the PSP character portraits (Chronicles) and the original Windows ones (Eternal/Complete)
>Chronicles+ also lets you choose between various soundtracks these games had throughout their many ports, in this case it's PC-88, Eternal/Complete and Chronicles
Correct. Hence why I said they are different kinds of 90s anime aesthetic. Both are great, just a matter of personal preference. Most people who end up enjoying one of the versions come back to play the other one anyway
No problem, I hope you enjoy playing them
>to play the other one anyway
That's what I wanted to ask.
Good day, found 10+ great games to play.
I'll start with chronicles and will play later eternal.
I guess I'm really bad at explaining things, Chronicles IS Eternal/Complete, anon lmao. They are essentialy all the same game, just make sure to change everything to 'Complete' in the options for 90s character portraits and music. 'The other one' is PCE, also 90s but different graphics altogether
Yeah, but different versions, right?
>identical
I see, in that case I'll stay with the console peasant version.
Nah, it was me who failed miserably.
I confused origins with eternal/complete.
Will start with origin.
you ain't seen nothing yet
Suikoden 3 and 4 remaster incoming
Why does the background have a much higher resolution than the characters?
If they touch character sprites there will be endless batching. Instead they get endless b***hing with the difference between characters and the background.
I was kinda blown away by how much I liked Ys2
It's really good
Ys1 is ok, but it's pretty short
Ys2 is the real deal tho
We all know that they are two parts of the same game
Only problem is the turboCD Ys remake can't be topped so it's all ~moot~ (peace be upon him).
Are you comparing a computer game to a console game? Also Ys has garbage combat.
If you don't like bumping enemies' asses, you're gay as frick bro
Yes but anything is better than turn based so...
It's fine to not like RPGs.
Man I just want a convenient way to play Ys 1 and 2 on my TV
Both examples suck dick and the zoomie bait poster who is obsessed with Y 4 some weird reason can suck my german balls!
homosexuals like you ruined this site.
That is all.
I hate pixel "remasters" but Ys remaster looks like RPGmaker so it sucks as well.
Not a fan of remakes in general, make another fricking game, we can emulate.
"looks like RPGmaker" no it doesn't moron
It's RPGmaker XP and you can't change my mind about it
Can you describe a single aspect of the Ys remake that is as tasteless as the average RPG Maker aesthetic? Your image proves my point, they look nothing alike apart from being high pixel count
