Does anyone else get bummed out by the fact that fantasy worlds don't exist?

Does anyone else get bummed out by the fact that fantasy worlds don't exist? It almost feels like a cruel joke played by God that we humans are capable of creating anything in our heads, new imaginary worlds, fantasy landscapes, people, architecture, ect, yet none of it will ever be real, and can only be lived through vicariously in art. There are no giant underworlds with underground cities like in Elden Ring or Skyrim, no floating sky islands like in Avatar, no orcs or trolls or wizards. All these things are just representations, piss-poor imitations of real life made in the brains of some bipedal ape on some weird green and blue planet.

The world we live in, as is, is objectively some high level sorcery shit. It's literally something that the wildest escapist autist from the medieval era couldn't even dream of happening. Even if you did get transported to some meme video game (that isn't objectively a dystopian nightmare for everyone except for the MC), and throw fireballs or fly, it'd get fricking mundane FAST.

Here you can travel at a 1000kph speed above the clouds and reach any destination on the planet by tomorrow. You can operate a 1,5 tonne machine of steel that goes up to 200kmh lmao, jump from the tallest building ever with a parachute and land on your feet. Bacteria, deadly viruses, all that shit, you take a pill and within a week you're good as new. Shit, just having the knowledge of billions of other humans, accumulated for a millennia, readily available at your fingertips is insane. This is something you can leverage literally today to pick up any skill and be great at it given enough practice. Objectively a prepared modern day human with our current tools could steamroll half of fantasy.
Now take your pics own advice and touch grass.

Most of the ocean is unexplored and space is so hilariously big it'll take millions of years to explore our own galaxy.

That carefree wonder comes from the fact that mortality doesn't apply the same in a video game than it does in real life.

I know the chances are good that when you die that's it.
But I still hope that conciousness is like some weird quantum inevitability and that you're just thrown into a different universe/later time period once the current you dies because its just so weird to think that your self awareness seemingly came from and will return to nothing. The possibility of infinite other worlds and always perceiving something would make it feel less of a weird improbability that there's anything at all.

                Anonymous

I feel the same. It's hard to even imagine what true nothingness is like, and I do think humans have come way too far for everything to be just a giant cosmic coincidence.

we are literally living the golden age of humanity, but everyone is depressed

        Anonymous

That's because our brains weren't meant for this society.
A long time ago we spent our days toiling outside, hunting animals, cutting down trees, building shelters.
We didn't have the technology or medicine of today and as a result the average life expectancy was only 30 or so, but that was okay, because that was all we needed to live a fulfilling life.
Now we live in the era of capitalism where we must contribute to society as a whole rather than just our close family. We spend our days inside of houses or buildings, drive cars, and sell cryptocurrency.
That's why so many people these days are on a wienertail of antidepressants. Our brains are old hardware running new software. We were made to be in the wild, our minds are the same as they were 10,000 years ago, and we were never meant to live the way we do now. And that's part of the reason why OP's post exists.

I largely agree, at least for myself personally. Fantasy and magic are all well and good, but sometimes I fantasize about a simple life where I live off of the land, far removed from the craziness of modern wage slavery and working for myself and maybe a few others to just be happy and stay alive. And this is coming from a guy who isn't some simpleton or even lazy at all. I just don't feel at peace with the way society is despite all of its conveniences and technology, which I do enjoy.

Sometimes I'd like to live in a fantasy world where I could be a mage and have a hot witch wife in a comfy woodland town somewhere, but then I realise I'd probably just fantasise about living in a weird sci fi world (our own or something similar) because its just human nature to fantasise like that.

  13. 2 years ago
    Anonymous

What actually gets me about fantasy worlds isn't the fantastical nature of the setting but rather the completely unrealistic way that people act.

For example, most noteworthy npcs are willing to help you for basically nothing in return.
If you have a party, they're all ride-or-die pals for life who wouldn't dream of abandoning you no matter how bad things get.
If it has romance, it is mostly simple and there is mutual benefit for both parties.
Townsfolk are warm, talkative and friendly. There is a sense of camaraderie - that people are generally open to be interacted with, and they don't mind telling you things that might help you or give you things to help your adventure along.

Basically, people generally are kind to one another and generally like the player character. This is contrasted with real life where everyone largely cares only for themselves and are closed off to anyone who isn't in their family or clique.

this, plus no wagie corporate bullshit, but living more simply and closer to nature. Even if it may be more brutal in some ways, at least life would be more honest and focused on what's around you and not about shooting each other over what you see on your phone. These are the really big draws that make me wish things could be different. Real life can be very demotivating for someone like me because I can't seem to fully get over the fact that things as they are now could be so much better if people could see it and weren't so stupid.

I'm mostly happy in this non-fantasy world of ours. The only thing I'm bummed out about is the lack of fairies. Why the frick aren't they real? It's not fricking fair. Every day I wake up and I just have to pretend like I'm okay with that.
But no. I'm not okay. I will never have a fairy girlfriend. I will never even meet a fairy. Girls will always be human sized instead of being a couple of inches tall. I will never catch a peek up a fairy's skirt as she flies around without a care. This world is cruel and unjust and I will never be truly happy.
