Along the way of rediscovering their lost lore and reestablishing their Flights, they are faced with dragonkind who refused the offer of the Titan's ascensions; Primalists, and begin waking up to cause havoc on the world and dominate it for their version of "true" dragonkind.
Obviously, the Dragonflights, along with the Champions of the Horde and Alliance, go to stop them, first dealing with one as two Black Dragons vie for leadership (Wrathion and Sabellion); eventually, they realize it's going nowhere and someone more impartial and more dedicated to the spiritual element needs to be leader, hence deciding on Ebonhorn become Aspect of Earth. Then the Fire Primalist goes to the Emerald Dream to pretty much do what Ragnaros was trying to do with Hyjal in Cataclysm; he almost succeeds, I think.
There's one Primalist left, an Ice one eventually reluctantly joining Alexstrasza's side after seeing how insane her breathren went. One of them teams up with a Void-aspected entity who takes on the form of a high/blood elf and was at one time the artifact for Shadow Priests in Legion, setting up the plot for the upcoming trilogy.

People got sick of it and most of the people playing/characters don't want to fight because the world keeps getting tag fricked by disasters and villians. All the open world pvp chuds play classic for that.

Story was the appeal of the Warcraft RTS games, and the entire point of WoW was being able to play in the world set up by the RTS games. Especially Warcraft 3, because everyone was hyped to see Illidan and Arthas.
Modern WoW has nothing to go off, it's a story that's run on for way too long and has no real originality even when it tries to be original.
It's funny, because they wouldn't have to do a whole lot to make original interesting shit, but they never will because they've pigeonholed themselves into a very narrow angle of story where all the big names have to constantly show up and hang out with the player because they're just so cool. Story was the appeal of the Warcraft RTS games, and the entire point of WoW was being able to play in the world set up by the RTS games. Especially Warcraft 3, because everyone was hyped to see Illidan and Arthas.
Modern WoW has nothing to go off, it's a story that's run on for way too long and has no real originality even when it tries to be original.
It's funny, because they wouldn't have to do a whole lot to make original interesting shit, but they never will because they've pigeonholed themselves into a very narrow angle of story where all the big names have to constantly show up and hang out with the player because they're just so cool. The already reformed the entire game once before, imagine them merging Alliance and Horde against a third power (that players can join), or split the alliance and horde into divisions due to infighting, or delete a chunk of continent that no one's using in a spirit bomb attack, or a million other things than Arthas and Thrall spitroasting the player character for the tenth fricking expansion while Alexstraza tickles your balls.

I Always felt the story in wow was the story of your character. levelling up, doing quests, exploring the world, dungeons with other players with other players, that time you got that awesome weapon to drop etc.

The current writers have an issue that when they create a character, somewhere along the line they've decided that having a love interest is a replacement for having a personality. Several times you'll meet someone and all they have to say is that the guy/girl/statue of a snake they're fricking exists, and vice versa.

I played on retail during Cataclysm and before that and after that on some private servers (on Nostalrius for example) and despite never relaly achieving much or eveb being on any raid I still consider WoW to one of the most magical experiences in gaming, there is no other game for me so comfy

Earlier versions of WoW, I would say vanilla to Cataclysm, didn't really have a overarching story, but more like a series of isolated plot points that eventually got resolved

Mists of Pandaria was the first expansion that went heavily on lore/story
You can do what you're saying, there is even an achievement for it called Loremaster which basically has you complete every story line in each zone in every expansion
If you're really interested in WoW's story, I would recommend waiting for The War Within expansion that comes later this year. It's directed by Metzen, the OG dude who wrote WC3 and all the classics. The expansion is also part of a trilogy called Worldsoul, and each expansion will tie in to the next, so if you're a story dude, I think you'll like it

There are several dragon tribes to collect dragonfus from, as well as several special snowflake elemental dragons you can collect like frost dragon, storm dragon and so on.
