What hatred? FF9 is tied with 6, 7, and 10 as the most beloved mainline Final Fantasy games. The contrarianism you see here on Ganker is the opinion of the minority.
As for an objective overview of FF9, it is aesthetically great. The second best looking FF game behind 10. The first two discs are a really engaging moviegame as you are constantly exploring new kingdoms and swept from setpiece to setpiece. The characters are very likeable. Interesting renaissance era setting with airships and steampunk castles. The game also has some neat stuff like the active time events or the friendly monsters. The story loses steam a few hours into disc 3 when it becomes about the hunt for Kuja and you stop visiting new kingdoms, and are confronted with the lackluster combat and lack of things to do outside of the main plot, but it's still overall fun.
It's one of the most hated RPGs ever to exist.
