If they make MMO games, I'll bet it has something to do with league of legends or anything like that, and its fricking boring.
Riot is a game company that didnt have a balls to make a brand new IP without any involvement with league of legends.

They might be the only big established company with a genuine shot. The lore and world are basically already made for them (WoW also had that advantage). They also have a huge, established, and loyal fanbase. Their funder Tencent is giving them no deadline and can provide nigh-infinite resources. They got the lion’s share of the Blizzard brain drain, so potentially a lot of experienced MMO people determined to make a better game. And they have a lot of vidya industry big names, first among them being Ghostcrawler himself, who led WoW through its best years, and has a great openness for communication with the players.
No joke, I think we may potentially have the prophesized WoW killer incoming. If Dragonflight doesn’t save WoW from its decay, the Riot MMO may end up being the o e to give the coup de grace.

It means they lack creativity and doesnt have balls to establish a new IP, simple as

making a great MMO in 2022 is not possible, thanks in part due to the environment created by riot's shitty esports game

  7. 2 years ago
    Anonymous

Pretty much every predictor of their games before just makes people get hyped, people expect a F2P MMO without P2W mechanics, big huge world to explore, huge balanced PvP scene since they have League, huge PvE raids, etc.

It's going to have that but for me what people are not gonna like is the gameplay itself, Riot's games are hit or miss and LoR moved people away because people didn't like it, and also LoR had very little crazy combos since it was so focused in being fair. So people's biggest fair should be, the MMO being too safe and boring, or having a huge gimmick that's going to filter them. And I think that's going to happen.

  8. 2 years ago
    Anonymous

Riot has the potential to make a good game, yes, but MMO's have a stigma for a reason.

  9. 2 years ago
    Anonymous

Why did they change the lore and characters as the years went by?

      Anonymous

The LoL was originally just humorous set dressing for the gameplay, they didn’t really thought it in depth. People were starting to ask for a more serious and well-developed lore they could invest in. And when the dev team starting developing Aurelion Sol, they got the excuse: there’s no way a TITANIC STAR-FORGING DRAGON would mesh well with the tongue-in-cheek cast of fantasy character parodies and wouldn’t humor doing gladiatorial fighting for the Summoner’s Guild. So Riot made a grand reboot of the lore.

        Anonymous

But it would? That's mostly an execution problem, though scaling would remain a problem.

the whole summoner/Institute of War thing went by the wayside long before Sol

        Anonymous

Bullshit. The journal of justice was more in-depth world-building than nu-league ever had.
Original league was a fleshed out, humorous but breathing world, similar to discworld. Nu-league is a bunch of window dressing for the champs' personal stories and nothing else matters.

        Anonymous

the lore reboot was because riot was working on the mmo. Richard lewis in 2015 reported that riot was working on a csgo clone and a LoL successor. Its also the same year they hired warhammer 40k writers to write the lore for them and 2 years later the universe site launched with dev videos talking about the world https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pxjiCFo0NZM

maybe? It depends. I think a lot of people are going to be let down because I think its going to be a fairly simple game (think 4 abilities like LoL), and I don't think its going to have the complexity of XIV/WoW. They're going to make it as casual as possible to attract as many people as possible. Also, I expect it might have some kind of mobile port at some point because of Riot's increased targeting towards China. Ultimately I expect something similar to Lost Ark, with a slightly better story, and less P2W but more 'buy to look good'. I don't think its an mmo that is targeting existing players of others mmos, but rather a new audience of players from Riot's other titles.

Then Ahri came along with her hyper mobility cancer. Zed was fricking busted and asiaticclick "plays" from faker made riot realize flashy teleporting champs sell, before him assassins were just faceroll champions for low elo players to goof around with, he completely ruined the game. Thresh was just the typical overloaded kit cancer than is a staple for new champions today.

No. The current "proven" path, aka WoW themeparks has largely shown to be deadends that is open to content droughts, lack of socialization, etc. However given Riot's previous track record (Valorant), they will probably be going the same path. They might survive for longer due to recency bias and new fans, but it will inevitably reach the same problems as WoW and FFXIV.

        >You are not living in reality. For almost all of MMO's existence themepark has absolutely eclipsed open world MMOs by orders of magnitude of popularity and income.

You haven't been looking at the stagnancy of the genre for the last 10 years either. Of course themeparks beat sandboxes in popularity and income, that's why everyone copied them. That's also exactly when when the real alternative (gatcha) came up, the medium dried up and died as that popularity and income isn't sustainable. You've seen Lost Ark, these games eventually deevolve into bullshit lobby simulator jobs. That's why we need to go back to the original route and push forward a new path from there, not the current path which goes nowhere. If whatever results is less popular, so be it, reliable income from loyal fanbase > unsustainable income from fotm

None of that has anything to do with thenepark vs sandbox
A theme park doesn't mean you have to allow the rides to be done solo

Neither Ahri nor Sona are anywhere unique or special enough to be deemed one of the kind type of characters that can not be replaced/recreated in another IP.
They are not "iconic" enough as far as they inherent characters are. You can call them iconic for the game or their visage being tied to it, but they are hardly special as far as their characters and personalities are concerned.

It will be nothing like that game. If anything, it will either be more like WoW or more like Lost Ark. There's absolutely no way Riot makes a PvP-focused crafting survival MMO.

Riot will invest a lot of money to make sure the games launch will be successful
the initial zones, quests and overall storyline will be amazing and people will have fun experimenting
the first expansion will be released after 2-3 years from vanilla launch and it will be good, people will be optimistic for future expansions
the 2nd expansion will already have put in half the work of the first but make double the revenue
riot will realize this and subsequently release expansions every year that drag the game down in the gutter until finally we hit rock bottom

    >Does Riot have what it takes to make a great MMO?
    No
Same for the card game and fighting game

i dont play league, i dont play valorant. Ive had no interest in anything Riot related. However, if i was going to give any current dev the opportunity to make an actual good MMO it would be riot. They have funding out the ass, an established world with a frickload of lore to draw from, and the resources to keep up with the demand for content.

It may not be everyones cup of tea, but they have a chance to be like what wow was when it released.

Yes and it will have great art direction, cute girls, and mediocre gameplay.

    >League of legends
In on of the worst spots it's ever been
which is impressive considering this downward spiral began like 6 years ago
    >TFT
BOOOOORING, gets old faster than milk.
Most forgot it's even in the client.
    >Legends of Runetera
Slow Hearthstone clone that brings nothing new to the table and fricked itself over by not being advertised.
    >Valorant
Tricked people into thinking this would be the next Overwatch or League but with guns.
Turns out it's neither because it has 0 identity. Garbage.
    >Wildrift
A solid mobile game which has the advantage of NOT having some of the broken characters from the OG game.
    Average all things considered.
    >Ruined king
You never heard of it? I'm not surprised it's a shitty old school RPG that's not offensively bad but it was completely ignored due to literally no advertising.
Also feels like darkest dungeon just without any atmoshpere.
    >Arcane
Some people believe this to be good... I'll agree to disagree with your lesbian shitpost
    >Tellstones

    ?t=26
They are charging money for this
    >Project L
The supposed upcoming savior of fighting games
    >Project F
The MMO that's gonna be the best of it's kind with a free to play model and only skins and cosmetics for purchase.
    The next "WOW/FF14 killer"

Still holding out hope MMO fans?
