no one cares
>twitter e-celeb
He's co-creator of Doom.
The only real thing he did for Doom was code the engine. He doesn't know jack shit about game design.
fpbp
If I wanted a good story I would watch a movie or read a book.
Pretty sure he walked that statement back a few years ago and basically said "obviously story matters in story-based games."
pro you aren't playing a videogame you're watching a movie
He hasn't made a game in the last 25 years.
>See: Doom Eternal.
Oh yeah, I heckin' love playing Simon Says instead of a fun shooter with high mobility. Frick eternal.
that shit is gay as frick. i only play mobas and arena games which are the only real video games.
Gameplay > Music > Graphics >>>>>> Story
Gameplay > Music > Story > artstyle >>> ass and breasts >>>>> graphics
I don't complete agree, but I respexct the opinion.
KYS if you dont mute the music
It needs to at least be a coherent excuse plot.
Don't remember Tetris having a convincing plot, still sold like hotcakes.
That old games like Silent Hill 2 is remembered so fondly would suggest that it does
It absolutely does matter and the people who claim it doesn't are lying to you or they don't know themselves. There's plenty of games that were the best of their franchise in terms of gameplay but are considered the worst because of the story being shit.
See: Borderlands 3.
See: Doom Eternal.
See: Mechwarrior 5.
See: Starcraft 2.
The only games in which story never matters are games that are purely built on mechanics such as chess or tetris. But videogames like that aren't really made anymore.
three of those games are trash and the fourth is considered shit because it's a worse multiplayer experience than the previous, which is what the game is centered around, not story.
ah yes Doom Eternal is trash
Ganker never fails to disappoint with the contrarian assblast opinions
Hmmm
I can't play games that have awful cringe writing so I guess
It does, but idiots tend to either misunderstand what a good story is, or are abject imbecile subhumans allergic to letters.
If story is only told by letters then it's shit game.
You are a moronic moron, as your teachers, parents, psychiatrists, bosses and coworkers always told you.
Don't worry though, you are so stupid that you will forget it in a few minutes.
>Can't refute my point
>Goes straight into name-calling
And keep "playing" your VNs.
Nailed it huh? Have you ever considered that people get that you are a temperature room IQ imbecile straight away because of the moronic shit you post? If you want to be taken seriously try being less moronic. I know, tall order for you, but I have faith in you. You can read yourself into having an average IQ, anon, if you have the will for it.
Concession accepted, illiterate moron.
I just don't see you as a person to treat you like one.
Are you going to cry, little moron? Do long sentences make your little head ache?
You know if you don't reply I win, right you stupid moron?
the IQ metric comes from the same field that doctors the DSM to fit in with political views. it's not consistently recorded or tested anywhere, or else the world average is like 87 which contradicts the definitions of the metric. it's a useless number that people use to inflate their egos(note how everyone has IQ 110-130 according to tests they paid for or took online), and not understanding this is cattle brained and does not reflect someone who thinks critically or forms their own original opinions. IQ metric is MBTI-tier, which is astrology-tier.
It is a good metric to make gullible morons feel inadecuate. Take a hint and don't butt in my bullying of some online idiot that can't read 2 paragraphs without getting a headache.
I've read at least four times the amount of books at age 31 than the average american does in their entire life, actual numbers, and that's what I go to when I want story. with games, and in my opinion, comics/manga as well you are getting a worse experience from a combination of mediums. it's ironically probably people who don't read books that cling to story games, because other than manga or netflix or whatever people use these days that's their only exposure to stories.
Games should only have a story if it's worth telling ie not shit and pointless
this. if you suck at writing, refer to
but if you actually have some talent, sure, put a story in the game. just make sure the cutscenes are skippable so you don't end up like MP3
Yes.
t. never going to play God of War because I don't like the story nor the main character(s)
I don't like playing movies or watching games. I only play games where you make your own story, which in my case translates to survival games, factory sims and management sims.
Yeah, but cutscene fatigue and exposition dumps suck ass.
A game's story needs to be coherent and good enough to establish motivations, but at the same be "optional" compared to gameplay.
It's difficult to do correctly I think.
Good story can enhance a game. A bad story generally doesn't ruin it as long as the game isn't a movie game with 60 hours of cutscenes or at least the gameplay is good. But good stories also don't rescue bad games.
I’d say that depends entirely on what kind of video game you’re developing. The medium wasn’t initially conceived to tell stories but to, uh, allow people to play games. Games like football or chess certainly don’t need stories, so I would say that video games don’t either.
Most video games do benefit from having some kind of story, obviously. Few games can stand entirely on their gameplay like Tetris does. Doom would have simply come and gone if it didn’t basically take place inside of a Bolt Thrower album cover.
I used to be a storygay but eventually I got sick of it getting in the way
I also get way more nostalgia for certain places in games rather than story events
The quality of the story matters in an amount that is directly proportional to the amount of time the game spends making you look at it.
No one cares if the story is shit if it is contained entirely in the manual and loading screen text. But if you make me spend 3 hours walking slowly behind a character explaining your story then it had better actually be good.
If the developer wants me to care about the story in their videogame it has to be amazing
given that the only game with good writing that i've ever played is disco elysium, and it's barely a game, i'd say no
It's what makes moments in a game stick to your memory the most, yes.
I think it depends on the genre fps games? Absolutely not frick halflife and Gaylo for wanting le story
