Does this ever get good?

I just beat Lamashtu but then it was the girl and then the Saint did something and now they're dead? or not? I'm like 20h into this game and I have no better sense of the characters or the stakes than I did when I started. Is there a point where the story picks up or is this MGS5 all over again

No it has the worst story of mainline and some of the worst gameplay due to the damage sponge bosses and atrocious level scaling. For raw story play SMT IV, for atmosphere play Nocturne, for characters play Digital Devil Saga

OP, ignore this fatlus brainlet calling me a moron. The only mainline games in the series with a somewhat serviceable story are SJ and maybe the first game. Is there some depth to them, sure. Just don't expect a "captivating" story like how that anon was saying.

I went back to replay this after completing it at release and I just can't stand it. Nocturne mogs it and even 4/4A are significantly better. I hate the DQ11 enemy placement, I hate most of the bosses having rigid patterns with their stupid free turn ebin super move, I hate the way levels are weighted in the damage formulas, I hate reverse fusion, I hate the awful quests, I hate having to rustle a million vending machines, I hate the free emergency teleport that removes all tension from the game permanently. It's the blandest most """""user-friendly""""" SMT and that's drastically to its detriment

It's honestly the hardest game in the series solely because of how JRPG-ish it is. As a classic SMT fan, it's hard to adjust to the arbitrary level scaling, forced side content, damage sponge bosses, Persona buffs slowing the game down to a crawl... The point of the series is that most obstacles can be overcome without grinding but with a new fresh strategy. Usually the only exceptions to this are in spinoffs or for final bosses. In V, it's every single boss maybe EXCEPT the final one because it's a complete joke.

For me the most offensive thing with the bosses was the patterns.
        >Bro how do you beat hydra?
Uhhh just use the dark blocker every third turn or you die

I hate the super moves you have too. It just turns every fight into a "buff up your main dude, unleash super move, repeat" and you have to do this because it's such a slow burn otherwise.
          I FRICKING HATE THIS GAME

I just got tired of the open world setting and enemies on screen. I found myself missing the tension of being in the middle of a dungeon and stressing out over how I'm going to make it to the next boss or save room. Open world with random encounter or enemies on the screen with the tight spaces of dungeons would have made the game more enjoyable for me.

            Anonymous

Pretty sure this is a result of casualization. Tension can be a negative emotion so it should be removed!
Naraku in IV was one of the most stressful but rewarding parts of the series because it was so damn tough and really felt like a classic SMT dungeon but people complained and they never did any opening segment like it again.

The story already picked up, you didn't pay attention. The demons knocked at Tokyo's door and now you're fighting chaos legions.

            V isn't open world.

            >It's honestly the hardest game in the series
It's easy AF after the second area lol, pretty much nearly every boss can be muted with Accursed Poison after that point (Fionn, Lahmu, Matador can't) which is super OP.

Pretty sure this is a result of casualization. Tension can be a negative emotion so it should be removed!
Naraku in IV was one of the most stressful but rewarding parts of the series because it was so damn tough and really felt like a classic SMT dungeon but people complained and they never did any opening segment like it again.

IV started the casualization you're talking about, its dungeon crawling was pathetic compared to anything else Atlus released prior to it. The challenge being next to 0 excluding those infamous two bosses doesn't quite match whatever "tension" the developer might have intended -- if it's too easy, you'll get bored. And if it's too easy, there's no tension, because you never feel in danger. The gameplay has to back up the atmosphere, no way or copes around it.

I hate the super moves you have too. It just turns every fight into a "buff up your main dude, unleash super move, repeat" and you have to do this because it's such a slow burn otherwise.

            >"buff up your main dude, unleash super move, repeat"
That's a funny complain considering that, historically, SMT's gameplay was all about "buff, debuff, dekunda/dekaja, repeat" -- V is the same sauce, just cooked differently.

It's as much of a dungeon crawler as any other 3D SMT game. Every environment is functionally a dungeon, you are never not in it same as the other 3D games.

I enjoyed it and I'll say that I enjoyed it about as much as I loved IV maybe even more, though IV grew on me in time.
Although I'm not sure that's actually great praise because I look back to IV and I was disappointed in it since we'd already had the astounding SJ which was and wasn't mainline (MUH TOKYOOOOOOOOOO).

The other elephant in the room was that IV: Final exists and that scratched a gameplay & story itch that V couldn't really live up to. IV: Final is hardly a masterpiece but it was good enough for me to say I thoroughly enjoyed it more than IV, V I enjoyed more than IV at launch but I'm still not sure the main quest works for me.
I don't need the story to be a masterpiece obviously but what is it from V that makes it harder to look back on but makes IV grow on me like mold? Companions.
Without that element, the battle system really leaves something to be desired; but I still undoubtedly enjoyed the game.

but still no re-release or update or anything. I guess life under Sega really is cruel and harsh..

Same here. Even 1 I had desire to replay because there's enough story content to keep you interested despite the mediocre gameplay. V manages to have even worse combat because at least in 1 you can stun/charmlock everything and get it over with quickly, V is a genuine slog to go through. And the story needs no mention

I could type out a multi post walla but it's safe to say that within the Meguro games SJ is his best work followed by III.
SJ works because he had limitations imposed on him and it translates well whereas III falls into the meguro trappings of focusing too much on style & instrumentation first. It's fine that he's off working on persona games forever where he doesn't need to push himself.
Kozuka's soundtracks are great because he embraced the previous games and embraced not only what they were but who they were influenced by; beyond just the organ players.

SMT has great music and every game has standout tracks that mog the competition.
