4 is good if you love 1 and 2 and can appreciate its gameplay despite the overkill cutscenes

the gameplay is 4 is good its just that there isn't enough of it and there's a part where you just follow a guy around that is exceptionally terrible and arguably one of the worst moments in the franchise no debate.

It really doesn't. These games are all riddled with movie trash, stop pretending only 4 is a cutscene-fest.

mgs4 had the longest cutscene of all time

And MGS2 has the most interruptions of gameplay of all time.

Codec calls are annoying, but that's the point. Ties into the themes and into Raiden as a character and the player stand-in. MGS IV is just masturbatory and overindulgent for no good reason.

              >you don't get it, MGS2 is supposed to be dogshit

Felt the exact same way. Bought the PS2 trilogy pack when I was like 15 off eBay and played through them all during summer vacation.
Something about the opening just hooked me so hard and I had this inner sensation of, oh yeah this game is going to be fricking amazing.
I felt the same way when I played the bombing mission of FF7 around the same time.
Since then I've played most of the Kojumbo catalogue, I still haven't gotten around to MG1/2, or Policenauts though.

        Anonymous

Policenauts is good. I haven't gotten to Snatcher (since only the Sega CD verison is 100% English).

MG1-2 are fine, but have aged in the ~40 years since they've released, obviously. You have to go in expecting them to be old and for the weird ass save/checkpoint system they got.

          Anonymous

Snatcher is fricking great, emulated it on my Wii way back when. The original versions on the MSX are unfinished while the PCEngine and Sega CD versions are the proper releases of the game.
The PS1 and Saturn versions are pretty shit in my opinion, they changed the music in a way that it totally fricks with the mood of the entire game and it's censored. The Sega CD version is the one to play.
          Emulates super easy.

Censorship on the breasts in the US version and I believe the gore on a dog, don't quote me on that. The Japanese version censors some of the gore.
The Saturn and PS1 versions show like a frame of gore and then pixel censor it I believe. Some sites said it censored the gore too.
Overall, the US Sega CD version is the least censored but they all cover a little bit.
It's just that PS1 and Saturn versions go overboard and censor a lot of shit.

I know everyone says that but like frick man, playing through it back then and everything seeming slightly off but you figure "well mgs1 was crazy so this is in line" and then in the final hours of the game, twist after twist, revelations, all culminating in that awesome sword fight on top of Federal Hall...

It had some good moments, but it was too easy to just go guns blazing in normal gameplay, and there were way too many annoying gimmick sequences. That Eastern Europe chapter was inexcusably awful, and people tend to gloss over how annoying Shadow Moses was with all the goddamn Dwarf Gekkos.

  10. 7 months ago

MGS aged terribly bad. It was fine for the time, most PSX 3D games had terrible controls anyway.

MGS2 takes everything that works from MGS and removes the shit. MGS3 further refines it and is amazing in every aspect, MGS4 has a lot of improvements again but the issue is that the game has 20 minute-long gameplay sections followed by 1h of cutscenes, MGSV has amazing gamplay and focuses on an open world so it's very different from past releases.

There's also Peace Walker which is canonical and very important for the story, but it's gameplay kind of sucks due to being a PSP game.

      >MGSV has amazing gamplay
Not sure I'd call it that amazing since they fell for the regenerating health meme which means they cut out a lot of the fun item use and interactivity from particularly MGS 3 and PW.
Also the lack of meaningful and entertaining boss fights, the story gets so bland.

MGS1 plays like shit, even back in 1998.
MGS2/3 are a bit better but not that great gameplay wise.
MGS4 controls are ok, but the horrendously bad frame rate ruins the entire game.
Peace Walker is the same as MGS2/3.
MGSV is the only game in the franchise who plays and runs well.

Gameplay needs alot of fixes unless you're used to below euro jank standards of mess with shitty controls. Story is just forgettable and the memes have past lived their glory days after the 2000s. Most of the games that came during it's time or after emulated a better feeling of those times and had tolerable gameplay on top of it such as Tomb Raider and Deus Ex. Don't fall for this scam.

      >Story is just forgettable and the memes have past lived their glory days after the 2000s.
Nothing about this is forgettable and MGS isn't just a quirky landmine of quality memes to shitpost with. It's a game with a lot of insightful and thoughtful things in it, made with lots of passion and love for the form and all the works which inspired it.

I'll wait for a steam sale on the collection.

I've played these games before, and they were good in the proper context. But I'm not going pay top dollar for it, knowing it's just meant to line Konami's pockets after they fricked up with "Survive" after firing their talent pool; then realizing they can't even make another MGS game without Kojima.

MGS1 is fabulous and the strongest as a game. MGS2 is better mechanically, but I was never really good at it. The setting, story, and characters are a massive downgrade from MGS1 with the exception being the Patriot AI monologue and the ending cutscene. MGS3 is the classic formula perfected, with the only sleight against it being the frequent menuing.

MGS4 is where it really started to get messy. While the gameplay is good, everything else about it is kind of shitty. It's something that I couldn't finish and it has really questionable performance, running sub 30 unless you have night vision enabled, at which point it would run at 60fps. Cutscenes also kill the momentum.

Peace Walker and MGSV are odd games. The mercenary thing makes it feel like it isn't really an MGS game, but they're fun in their own way. I think that Peace Walker's stuff work better for it than how it was implemented in MGSV. I didn't really believe it at first, but Ground Zeroes really is the best of MGSV because none of the extraneous BS in TPP is there. I don't necessarily mind the open world element, but it leaves a lot to be desired.

    >MGS1 is too simplistic and there is just not enough stealth sections compared to action setpieces
    >MGS2 is a major improvement but the improvements are something of a mixed blessing making the game both too hard and too easy.
    >MGS3 adds some interesting but mostly unnecessary mechanics that slow gameplay down, it also adds 3D camera which makes the game better.
    >MGS4 is a refinement of MGS3 in many ways but like MGS1 its main fault is a lack of stealth sections and the 3rd act in particular is pretty bad.
    >Peace Walker is a bit too simplified but its interesting to see the roots of the ideas that would make up TPP
    >MGS5 is fun but repetitive and the open world doesn't really add much, if you played GZ the open base level is where it should have been.
So the gameplay was never perfect in any of them but I would say it was part of the appeal.

These games are more like immersive sims where you pretend you're 007. They're pretty close to the experience you get watching a really great spy thriller. Though sometimes they dip into action movie territory. I never really liked how the games controlled, but once you play one long enough it becomes second nature.
