>how THE FRICK does a game company lose the source code of a game they made
hardly anyone gave a shit back in the day. shit was filed in a cabinet and left to rot afterwards.
now that re-releases and remakes are in vogue, everyone guards source code and masters like a hawk.
This is literally all of Japanese companies back in the day. They tossed that shit out because they'd just start anew on the next game and do better. It would get tossed in a box in a closet to be completely forgotten about or just lost entirely.
Their culture would make it hard to imagine consoomers and wanting to revisit old works. Remember even reruns on TV aren't even as much of a thing there. Nobody has time for that shit.
I bought the remake and had fun 2bh, yeah it lacks some of the charm of the originals (and has a weird bug where sometimes the background fails to load for a couple of seconds) but it's a small price to pay. If you really want the originals as GOLDMAN intended then you can always emulate them.
The bigger crime is that HotD 5 is out in arcades but not available anywhere else WTF
>emulate
play the original. it's out for PC homosexual.
hell, you should play the typing of the dead too. now that's a tough as nails game that's nearly impossible to 1CC. ttotd 2 is cool too. I'm still mad by how SEGA caused ttotd overkill to be rushed, and how we never got ttotd 3
I mainly played the HotD games on Wii honestly, they were great and that's why I didn't mind paying like... $3 for the remaster when it was on a deep discount. Hoped to play it with a friend but Steam Remote Play ran like AIDS because we were both on WiFi so ended up just running through it solo. >Typing
Yeah they're cool although the overkill one filtered me hard
overkill is the easiest one by far. as long as you type fast enough, zombies will recoil indefinitely. you can't pull that shit in the 2 mainline TTOTD games.
the one thing I hate about overkill is that high scores are combo-dependent, so dropping your combo once ruins your entire run. that and they switched the cancel key to fricking backspace and made punctuation optional, what the frick
That's true but I just never really got into it. I always found Overkill kinda boring and the typing version is the same for me. It's probably just nostalgia but I find HotD 3 and 4 to be way more interesting than Overkill
>they switched the cancel key to fricking backspace
The game doesn't tell you this, but you can also use either Ctrl key to cancel. And if you're determined to have it like the original, you could use something like AutoHotkey to remap your keys while the game is focused, to have pressing Esc send Backspace (cancel) and have Pause send Esc (pause). >made punctuation optional
If you beat the game, you can unlock Hardcore mode, which makes punctuation and spaces mandatory (though you still don't have to worry about capitalization), plus if you make a typo, you have to start over with a new phrase. Sadly you can't have mandatory punctuation separate from typo resets.
Another gripe I have about TotD Overkill is how item pickups work. Instead of one random letter popping up over the item, you're supposed to hit Tab whenever you see an item on screen. However, the items don't stand out from the background very well and don't have any kind of indicator over them, plus there's no penalty for hitting Tab when there's no item, which turns optimal play into just mashing Tab whenever you're not typing, which sucks. Whining aside, I still think it's a MOTHERFRICKIN' great game.

I forgot to mention, one thing I really like compared to past TotDs is how it includes the original HotDO too. I wish the others did the same.
Here's the story of how TotD Overkill was rushed, like this Anon mentioned.

Still came out pretty damn good for being made in 4 months, with the dev studio fricking dying in the middle of it.
I enjoyed it. Decent fun, a great soundtrack, and the humor has honest fun with itself without coming off as trying to ape the originals or be too ironic. I think it had a Typing rerelease as well
There has to be a good reason for this. Maybe there is some sort of disconnect between the eyes and body when you're moving on a rail that you can't control, but your eyes are telling you that you are moving.
That, or maybe devs are just morons who don't know how to sell fun things.
Not to be a shill, but Typing of the Dead Overkill, which also includes House of the Dead Overkill, is on a steep sale here right now:
https://www.indiegala.com/store/game/the-typing-of-the-dead-overkill-collection/48535_m
It's worth noting that when I bought this on the 1st of the month, the countdown timer said the sale would end on the 3rd, yet it didn't. Since then, I've kept visiting the page every so often, and the timer keeps getting reset with more time. Kinda scummy, but I can confirm the sale itself is legit. My point is, maybe don't worry so much about rushing to buy it before time is up.
are you me? I've been wondering why the game is on a non ending sale.
Also weird to see the game on a key seller site and not on steam (last sale was years ago)
To be fair, Typing of the Dead 1 was based on HotD 2, not HotD 1, and it didn't include the shooting mode (only Overkill does that). But it would've been great if they added a typing mode to the remake.
get redream, easiest Dreamcast emulator to set up.

Grew up playing the shit out of THotD 2. Back at my local arcade (mini gold course) like 20 or so years ago they'd do a all-you-can-play Saturday and me and some rainman-tier autismo stranger played from start to finish.
In my case my autist partner was around my age at the time, but I do remember boomers also being autistic as frick about shooting, driving, and fighting games. God I miss arcades.
i remember beating gauntlet in the arcade with a boomer, a teenager, and another boy my age. when we beat the final boss, the boomer bought us all a slice of pizza, and a coke. do human beings even interact anymore?
>Spam shots at the center of the screen: the boss
Is Hermit the easiest boss in the history of rail shooters? At least Chariot's small chest weakpoint actually moved from side to side sometimes in his first phase.

HotD3 >= HotD2 > HotD1
I miss all of them though, and I'm upset that HotD4 never made it to disc from the arcades.
At least it's on PS3, even if it's download. This however is stuck on arcades boohoo.
Got to try this at some animecon, lovely art but I remember it being bishi bashi with a love theme.

How would you make a non-lightgun HOTD game?
i wouldnt
VR.
make it for switch and mobile. Use gyro aim but its still on rails. Even harder because theres enemies off screen you should be shooting.
Typing of the Dead.
I think hotd 3 and 4 is way better than 1 and 2. Also Judgement, Empress and the Fool was the most fun bosses out of the series.
>I think hotd 3
did you forget that you have to fight the cop zombie like 3 times?
plant boss was okay but reusing the cop was cheap
4 is low key the best HOTD game, 3 is pretty weak though.
Help me! Help ME!!

Suffer like G did?
Why does Sega treat this series like shit while still kinda supporting it. Between 5 and the Remake it's like they're trying but also not.
is the recent remake really THAT bad?
the grafxs have a "Nintendo hire this man" look to them
is overkill any gud?
I enjoyed it. Decent fun, a great soundtrack, and the humor has honest fun with itself without coming off as trying to ape the originals or be too ironic. I think it had a Typing rerelease as well
TO PROTECT THE LOIYFE CYCLE
It saddens me VR didnt bring railshooters back. They were bullshit but had so much variety and fun titles

no but I'm wondering if I should grab it (will probably play it in like a month)
How the frick HoTD remake has less content than the original PC version, it doesn't even have the typing game for frick sake
To be fair, Typing of the Dead 1 was based on HotD 2, not HotD 1, and it didn't include the shooting mode (only Overkill does that). But it would've been great if they added a typing mode to the remake.
