Having complex cutscenes play out in the world while the player was still active and even able to interact with the events was basically unheard of. In fact it was so unbelievable that they had a hard time securing a publisher because publishers simply thought they wouldn't be able to pull it off.
>complex cutscenes
huh?
Anon it was 1997
I dropped the game after the endless train tunnel section, that is the last time listen I listen to reddit tourists in here, truly the most overrated reddit game of all time.
Mosquitos attention span.
on a rail is the best level in the game and you're just a gay moron,it lasts 30 minutes if you're capable of using your nose to breathe
I dropped after you finally get to the surface (what you've been trying to do the whole time) and then you have to immediately go back to active a nuke to kill the soldiers or some shit, frick this crap
That's not what happens, but I can see you're probably from a military service family. You activate a rocket that has a satellite to help stop the xen portals from appearing, you don't "nuke" soldiers, only shoot them in self defense. Though everyone still left at Black Mesa do get nuked. That was black ops doing though.
the only chapter that overstays its welcome is surface tension, and even then you can skip most of the battle sections
this is like the 10th thread in the past hour that insists a beloved, older game is actually lame
12 year olds have no good games to play so they just shitpost out of anger instead
how would they know what is a good game?
most of these are falseflags, most of what zoomers complain about is either controls, cheap-feeling difficulty or fps caps.
Yes it's a masterpiece especially compared to mindless Quake shit.
Well it really isn't special anymore but HL2 is still better than most games released today.
>glorified tech demo
Don't worry. I'm sure Valve will announce an open world souls like battle royale competitive e-sports game with mtx soon and then you kids will have your toy.
>future AAA games still lose to a glorified tech demo
Any other excuses?
>tech demo happens to also be one of the best games ever made
Any other cases like this?
Sea of thieves
Crysis
first half of Crysis (everything before the no gravity bullshit)
Half-Life 1 killed the Doom Clone era of FPS
Quake killed the Doom clone era of FPS. The only 3D FPS that can even be called a "Doom clone" is Serious Sam, of all things.
Quake is just doom with the ability to look up and jump.
No it's not.
>Tankier enemies
>Fewer enemies
>Weapons that are efficient against pretty much every enemy
I love Doom but I've tried to get into Quake multiple times and lose interest like 4 levels into E1. It just doesn't feel as gratifying.
context you absolute moron, context!
when that game was made you werent even board, and the gimmicks and tropes you take for granted didnt exist
fricking useless moronic zoomers, youre the cause of the fall of the west. zoomer are too stupid, idiocracy happening irl
>the absolute state of zoomer brains
People who don't understand temporal context should have their human rights revoked.
They pioneered turning games into movies.
WOW great "innovation"
>feed narrative to player
>leave player in full control allowing unbroken immersion and interactivity trough all the game
Blame the copycats that saw HL success and came to the conclusion that what made it good was the narrative, and not the presentation
You had to be there to understand
What kind of ADHD spaz are you? The... usual kind?
If they ever did release half-life 3 I doubt it would make any big waves. The novelty would carry it more than anything. Everything that could have been done with it has been done in other games and it would just be another FPS in the pile
>Everything that could have been done with it has been done in other games
Anon, FPS games come out every year that are still having new ideas. This resignation that "everything has been done" is myopic as frick. Maybe it won't be as "game changing" as physics objects but they could very easily come up with ideas that set HL3 apart.
Honestly, I don't even care if HL3 isn't a gimmick-fest. What I really want is a game where the monsters feel truly alien again. That's the most important thing HL1 did.
the reason valve originally did the doomed episode format was them wanting to finish up the half life 2 storyline without wasting the designation of 3 on a conventional sequel. Gaider imagined 3 being as different from 2 as 2 was from 1. I imagine with Alyx that line of thinking probably fell by the roadside and it's just going to be more combine resistance if they ever make another game.
>I imagine with Alyx that line of thinking probably fell by the roadside
Yeah probably. I really hope if a 3 comes out it isn't HL2 2. I'm so tired of combine troops and Soviet parallel Europe.
That's probably the worst bit: what people keep asking for with Half-Life 3 is actually what should've happened in Half-Life 2: Episode 3. Half-Life 3 should be something as different to Half-Life 2 as Half-Life 2 was to Half-Life
gaben schizo talk about brain-computer interface, that'll be the new half-life
>Everything that could have been done with it has been done in other games and it would just be another FPS in the pile
So, like Half-Life and Half-Life 2 then
>oooooo we've got the same continguous world and scripted sequences as other shooters released before us, but in OUR game, they're also used for not-gameplay, and also our gunplay is rancid hot ass
>oooooo we've got the same Havok physics as a bunch of other games before us, but in OUR game, they're also used for not-gameplay, and also our gunplay is rancid hot ass
All Half-Life 3 would need to do is take something that's been done in the past 5 years, use it for something that isn't related to gameplay, and then make the gunplay rancid hot ass
I never liked it then, and still don't like it now. Somehow Duke Nukem was more entetaimning.
Don't act surprised. Duke 3D is an extremely competent game where the violence feels incredibly satisfying. Even if the game wasn't full of crazy alt fires for its guns like the rest of the Build trilogy.
>somehow fun was more entertaining
No shit.
>doesn't have the patience to wait 15 mins
all ADHD zoomBlack folk need to be gassed
it's like 20mins in a 10-15~ hour game, and sets the tone of immersion. especially because the level design is incredibly functional and feels like a real space, even whilst having good flow and not needing stuff like game-y map markers to tell you where to go.
bait successfully taken, deflected, spat out, and tossed back at homosexual OP *smirk*
it's good, the kind of storytelling valve is able to do is special.
t. zoomer 🙂
I played halflife for the first time this year and I was shocked by its familiarity; I could tell it genuinely was one of the most influential games of all time.
The entire storyline of secret research facilities destroying the fabric of reality with unethical mad science and then causing a global alien invasion and a military raid is the coolest shit ever and I’m tired of pretending it’s not
>Did boomers really piss and shit and fart their pants over this slop?
Why do twitter tourists write like actual toddlers?
so, you didn't play the game
opinion discarded
Worst game I played
congrats, anon, you managed to trigger the reddit millenials. Half Life is up there with nu-Zelda as the most overrated and boring game of all-time.
Low res texture filtering looks so bad but I've never seen HL1 without it.
You can enter a console command to turn it off. It used to look better when I played it with software rendering because everything didn't look smeared with Vaseline. I'm afraid I don't remember the command though.
