Excellent gameplay, but they somehow fricked up the presentation of Doomguy himself that was impeccable in 2016 and i'm still not sure how
The only part of the game in this regard that feels consistent with 2016 is the BFG10K segment
I actually much preferred the aesthetic direction of Doomguy and most of the demons in Eternal. I was glad the soldiers more resembled their Doom 1 counterparts. The only one that's a throwback that I think didn't turn out quite as good as it could have was the Cyberdemon/tyrant thing, his eyes are too far apart and it makes him look goofy. I like the new having exposed biceps and that colored patch that's more reminiscent of the missing hole in his armor from the Doom 1 poster.
2016 starts strong but becomes a snoozefest halfway through.
I feel like Tyrant is supposed to be moronic, he's a big idiot brute with a rocket launcher. It's the Arch-Vile who has malevolent intelligence behind his eyes. All the more satisfying to stomp his head off.
I'm not talking about the aesthetic direction itself, the only part of Eternal i disliked in that regard is pseudo medieval shit. I'm talking about the way 2016 presented Doomguy himself. >never in third person >all emotions are coveyed through gestures and actions alone >despite using this limited range of expressions he is super charismatic and his small gestures like making VEGA's backup add a lot to his character
Eternal fricks this up completely aside from the BFG10K segment which feels like it was done even before they started working on actual Eternal or something.
I always see vids of these dudes swapping weapons like 10 times in the span of a second but even with the hotswap upgrade I can ever do it that fast.
You need to swap specific combos and hit it in the right moment. It also helps to have high FPS.
Ultimately it does give you an advantage, but you can complete the game on Ultra-Nightmare without really knowing how to quickswap, just by using strong guns like SSG, Lock-On Burst, Chaingun etc.
I am annoyed by how much I have to climb walls and swing on bars between combat encounters. And I can't put my finger on why but somehow it feels much less hype being Doomguy than it did in 2016. I keep going back to Doom 2 between my sessions of playing Eternal.
It's an extended tutorial on movement. It didn't work - you watch a boomer like Civvie play Eternal and he walks on the ground of some arena while shooting the weakest guns at heavy demons and talking how he "totally gets" the combat. There are jump pads and monkey bars all over the arena above him and if he just used those he could have easily bumped the difficulty up a few levels, but he just has to be a ground walker.
>the glory kill when you catch the marauder's punch and the just stab him through the head
Marauder clearly thinks he's hot shit, all the more fun to humiliate him.
getting so excited to play this. i never played a doom past 64, and after replaying those, i'm on doom 3 at the moment. it's a huge change of pace, but i'm enjoying it quite a bit. feels like the FEAR i never played! my plan is to complete it, then doom 64's port missions, then on to 2016 and eternal.
>I hated all the extra gimmicks like the shoulder cannon, grappling hook, and whatever other stupid shit they tacked on
Same. If I get so much stuff just dumped on me, I end up not wanting to use them.
idk why but i just don't find it that fun to play
i tried getting into 2016 several times and got bored after a few hours
i'm incessantly feeling like i'm missing something, it makes no sense, everything tells me i should be enjoying myself but i'm not
don't play it. trust that instinct. i finished way too many games because i felt like i should. if anything, see if there's another doom game you like.
No, it's just that hot swapping weapons allows you to increase the rate of fire. Shooting a rocket, swapping to the ballista, firing, and the switching back to the rocket launcher will let you fire both a lot faster than normal. It's an advanced technique that is certainly helpful but not necessary.
Both nudoom games have no cooldown for switching weapons after firing, you can just spam the SSG, railgun, rockets, anything immediately after one another. It makes combat high APM but totally brainless because you just shit out your highest DPS weapons on everything.
i see. sounds like it could be fun if you're into it, but a chore if you're not feeling it.

it's like a combo system where the best alternative for every situation is switching back and forth between the three single-fire weapons between shots, instead of different weapons being better for different situations.
It doesn't add skill btw, it was a thing they accidentally put in 2016 that broke it, so this time they designed it with it in mind. But the result is similar to every game where they accidentally made some dodge-move faster than running.
In my most sincere opinion, the original Doomguy from the 90s is the real deal.
Doom 2016 is also amazing, I LOVED the design of the armor, music and everything.
Doom Eternal... I feel the game was/is overrated. I can't explain, but there was either something missing or lacking. I don't like It, not in a "this game sucks" kind of way, but there is something that bugs me.
In past 3 years maybe, I had more fun playing the hardest Doom 2 wads with the Brutal Mod, than I had when I tried Doom Eternal.
Like, in the original Doom (90s), It's you, your guns, demons, and your mission? RIP AND TEAR THEM ALL!
In 2016, It was a huge surprised and a well deserved hype, cause It revived an old love of old and veteran gamers from the 80s and 90s, and even early 2000s.
And Bethesda and Id performed amazingly, delivering one of theirnvest titles ever.
Everything was there from the classic Doom, demons, violence, fast paced action, etc.
But Eternal... It's basically Doom 2016, but different weapons (at least the plasma rifle is there and they kept the original 90s design, so... props for that.), now the lore went alien military civilization bullshit, more characters to interact, hear them going bla bla bla all the time, jumping all around, acrobatics like a circus monkey, etc...
Like wtf, call me old fashioned but It didn't feel like Doom at all, just the title.
2016 is better and they should had just called it Doom 4
Don't most people just call it Doom 4? I definitely do.
Wait, there were games in the series before these?
Excellent gameplay, but they somehow fricked up the presentation of Doomguy himself that was impeccable in 2016 and i'm still not sure how

It's my favorite FPS of all time.

>>all emotions are coveyed through gestures and actions alone
They are, aside from one flashback and the final DLC cutscene.
Because Eternal fully embraces the mythological depiction of DOOMGUY and seeks to flesh the mythology out in all its schlocky cheese.
>chainsaws for magic ammo
Not a real doom game.
One of the most unique and fun shooters I've ever played
>Visuals of 2016
>Gameplay of Eternal
And the game would be perfect.
>fast paced gameplay
>dark and samey environments
>most monsters are gray/dark gray with nothing to distinguish them color-wise
wow cool game
2016's visuals were generic trash. Eternal with 2016's arcade mode would have been perfect.
Master Levels > Arcade Mode
We just needed more MLs...

yeah but I also completely ignore the cringe story in these games
I always see vids of these dudes swapping weapons like 10 times in the span of a second but even with the hotswap upgrade I can ever do it that fast.
you have to bind the weapon keys to easily accessible ones instead of the number keys

The jumping/traversal sections were all moronic. I don't know what the frick they were thinking there.
The intent was to give you something to do between fights so it's not just walking through hallways. It's less painful than 2016's platforming.

I hated all the extra gimmicks like the shoulder cannon, grappling hook, and whatever other stupid shit they tacked on
I finished 2016 but not Eternal.
The problem they have is that there's just not enough monsters. I should be able to kill like 4 guys with one blast from the super shotgun.
The shoulder cannon directly improves the game by letting you throw grenades without having to put away your gun.
Even grenades were a gay addition
nah
>I hated all the extra gimmicks like the shoulder cannon, grappling hook, and whatever other stupid shit they tacked on
Same. If I get so much stuff just dumped on me, I end up not wanting to use them.
I thought it was OK but not that great and ultimately not what I really want from a DOOM game.
What do you want from a Doom game?
Bigger body count, stupider enemies
Actual level design? Every area in Eternal is a linear hallway, arena or shitty platforming section
this game had AI so good, that the actual game became scary at higher difficulties.
idk why but i just don't find it that fun to play
i tried getting into 2016 several times and got bored after a few hours
i'm incessantly feeling like i'm missing something, it makes no sense, everything tells me i should be enjoying myself but i'm not
The core game is kinda boring to be honest.
The DLC is much harder and much more rewarding. All my good memories of Eternal are from the DLC.
don't play it. trust that instinct. i finished way too many games because i felt like i should. if anything, see if there's another doom game you like.
Definitely trust that instinct yeah, haha
The OST is so fricking good.
Yeah it's great
Wtf!This game is 30gb
No the weapon switching gimmick was bad.
haven't played eternal yet, but i have heard this before. what do you mean? is it some kind of rock-paper-scissors type system?
No, it's just that hot swapping weapons allows you to increase the rate of fire. You don't have to do the weapon rotation, it just makes the game easier. If you want, ice grenades and glory kills make the game just as easy.
i see. sounds like it could be fun if you're into it, but a chore if you're not feeling it.
Like the other anon said, none of it necessary to just play the game. But it makes everything a lot easier and you're somewhat intended to abuse it.

Playing the DLC on nightmare made me have to actually step away from my PC to take a break after some of those combat encounters.
The horde mode skin for the Ballista is really nice.
Bought it and uninstalled after reaching the title menu. Staggering amount of cancer right out of the gate.
I genuinely thought I had accidentally bought some bootleg knockoff game when I first opened it.
it really looks cheap. And 16 just has some abstract animated gif background and it looks better (also the menu theme was better in 16)
In my most sincere opinion, the original Doomguy from the 90s is the real deal.

We are alike, you and I.
(continuation of my my thoughts)

>we're opening portals to hell
>eternal
>lol nah they just aliems xD
No wait xD.
I meant the guys/people/whateverthefricktheyare that take DoomGuy when he gets into their dimension, fightsnin a pit, and joins their ranks.
Been stuck in one of the optional arenas in the first DLC for ages
The one with two archviles and the Doom hunter right after
What's the point of skins in fps games?
