I liked it as well apart from the malaria stuff but having it rise to popularity years later never made sense to me.
It's because it's in Africa, and it's an interesting setting, and beyond that the animations for healing are pretty top notch, and you even have enemies aiding their friends, and getting them out of the way when they're down.

What would the Slayer feel about the Doom 3 marine and I guess by extension, the engineer of thr expansion pack? They were basically ordinary dudes with maybe some Martian ancestry that managed to near single handily push back invasions from Hell.

Codecs prove that the "slayer" is the original doomguy. Idk if that counts for DOOM3 though. Slayer probably likes anyone who kills demons because of Daisy.
