I think the best gameplay is in colony since it has a 4 character party and promotes hybridization since they have multiple unique skill trees, on top of a weapon add-on system.

Everything takes inspiration from other works, that's a terrible argument to shut him down. Not that I fully agree with that other anon, as there's little evidence of a porn game actually being that 'ascendant media' he's purporting, and I don't think I've seen any game truly strike a blend of porn/non-porn in a way that is satisfying in both angles. Traditional games like Witcher/Baldur's Gate are probably closer to striking that than purpose made porn games, as they often will fall into the pit of the porn just not being the point, like Sengoku Rance - it's a great game, has an entertaining story, and it would be lesser without the porn, but it's still not what I'd consider effective porn.

I recently finished the original legend game, it was pretty good but the bugs became a lot more evident toward the end and I couldn't get the hypnosis stat counter to go up at all.
Seems like the dev dropped off the face of the earth too, there are buttons for other customization options in the midnight shop's vending machine but they don't do anything and only clothes are available.

depends on what you look for, if you actually wanna experience the rance series proper, start from 01 and just play in order from there. 03 isn't translated yet though, could mtl, but that would ruin some of the tone.
if you're really just here for the gameplay, try sengoku or kichikuou rance, since those are the most acclaimed
Seconding this, though realistically you could also start at 5D (don't)
Here's a summary of the games though.
01 is one of the rare examples where a remake is better than the original. First game in the series, Rance is a fresh 18 year old solving an abduction mystery. It's okay, more similar to a point and click game than a VN.
2/02 are almost the exact same game, maybe with better art, kind of a ehh game but important for lore. Introduces several major characters including muh waifu shizuka. Rance is sent to investigate some shit about some b***hes, usual rance antics ensue.
3/03 is also a good remake, different gameplay style between the two though. Rance is called to leazas to help defend it from helman who is invading. Sets up a better relationship between some characters and has dome genuinely funny moments and introduces Rances horny talking sword who likes stabbing demon b***hes. 03 also has voice acting. Rance is uncredited, but is 100% confirmed to be VA'd as the jp voice of bruno in jojo.
4 is alright, but limited to pc98/early windows. Kind of hard to play today, but it has good art. Tl;dr Rance and sill get sent to skypia from one piece and have to find out how to get off, and also escape the island.
5D is a gambling game, short but kinda annoying. Rance and sill are sent to another dimension.
VI is a dungeon crawler that introduces important characters and sets things up for sengoku rance, also moves the story forward for X.

Sengoku Rance is a fricking kamige, sort of a soft remake of kichikuou Rance, but set entirely in JAPAN, it's a grand strategy game that you will enjoy 100%. Tip: If you keep trying you can beat the panda.
Rance Quest has missions and gameplay is similar to evinicle, tl;dr Rance gets ED and has a kid, pretty funny, Rance is extremely unhinged in this game because sill is frozen in ice and isnt there to keephim in check
IX is a better fire emblem. It's not even really a Rance game, it's more about Patton, the prince who starts a war with leazas in 3, and helping him take his country back.
Rance X is supposedly IGN japan's top game of 2018 if that says anything. Also a soft reboot of the ending part of Kichikuou, it's the longest non-gacha video game script of all time currently.
Now, I mentioned Kichikuou a couple of times, but it isn't canon in the current timeline since there was a reboot after 4 technically (01, 02, 03, 4, 5d etc.).
Kichikuou Rance is one of the greatest grand strategy games of all time, it sets up the formula for other games to copy and attempt to create something as that. This was the game that would've made Rance mainstream if he didn't rape, its the best selling eroge of all time (I'm pretty sure), and it single handedly brought alicesoft out of bankruptcy.
It's huge, not Rance X huge, but it has like 13 fricking endings.
Rance got bored after Rance 4 and decides to become a leader of some bandits and starts attacking cities, after he gets his ass handed to him and sill gets captured, he decides to beg leazas for help, becomes king and declares war on the world. Imagine Rance in quest, no filter, but also imagine him with a purpose, he's ruthless and power mad. It was extremely popular, and I think sold a million copies when it released. Highly recommend it.

02 ads a very minor bit of lore for shizuka but the last 20 minutes of the game isn't worth playing the whole thing.
Rance doesn't get good until 3, and I still personally prefer III because the card-exploration system in 03 feels shitty to me.
i really wouldn't recommend starting from 3 though... i still think having previous knowledge of first two games is pretty helpful considering the series prides itself on its massive cast.
01 does add a lot though, 02 is just... redrawn, really

I think the MC is the reincarnation of a character of another game (which isn't actually a game but more like a "game that never was"). The real antagonist is the girl who wants to get the MC to remember that since they were a thing and wants to erase the current world.

There really should be more lose-and-get-cucked games. Its surprisingly rare. Especially if it doesn't end with a game over and you have to then live with your mistakes and losses. Bonus points if its like a single save file and you have to then live with the defeat, nothing quite sends the message home like best girl carrying the child of the guy who kicked your ass because you forgot to buy enough potions before leaving town.
Some NTR games have the most paltry excuse for this possible, like RJ01116468 came out pretty recently. You can 'beat' the game by doing the asininely simple 'walk past ghosts' trial 3 times in a row, and the game just immediately gives you a happy ending where the girlfriend is untouched. That playthrough is like 8 minutes long.
The only thing the game does even remotely interesting with the concept is that if you lose the dipshit trial 3 times, it still forces you to play it but it becomes impossible for all subsequent attempts, forcing you to at least interact with something which prompts the NTR action, but there's essentially zero substance to any non-NTR part of the game.
Just about the only game that does this well is Leane of Legitimate Crown. Almost all the NTR is entirely your fault for fricking up either the strategy portion of the game or the harem management. If you don't send your girls out into losing battles or run out of girls to send to the king's harem the girls you like never get touched.
I'm imagining a Dragon Quest parody game where (you) the Hero (wimpy shota) is partied up with 3 (initially) completely loyal battle tested hotties on your adventure to collect the magic sword, defeat the ancient evil, save the world, you know iconic RPG adventure stuff. You and your hotties go into dungeons to defeat bosses and collect magic orbs or whatever and if your party is defeated in battle at any point inside that dungeon one (or more) of your companions plead with the boss of the dungeon to spare your life by paying with their bodies (lowering their loyalty slightly each time). When the party fails you get a free power-up for some reason, lets say a magical artifact draws out your feelings of jealousy and despair and grants you strength and hope in return. Each boss has like a couple scene variations of increasing corruption, (E.G. girls hate it but do it anyway to save you, they kinda like it but can't admit it, love it and aren't shamed anymore call the hero a loser and just beg for impregnation) which one you get depends on their loyalty stat. Game is balanced such that on a normal playthrough without grinding you lose to every boss a couple times. NG+ is where you have your pure run and harem ending, or if you just grind a frickton.
