Whats the difference between trial and raid bosses?

        >What's the difference between trial and raid bosses
        In modern XIV? Not much.
Originally, it meant going into a larger area like a fortress or something and fighting through to a boss, killing lower-tier mobs in your wake.
But in modern XIV, you kind of just zone in at the boss now, just like for trials.
Alliance Raids are the only place with that semi-exploratory feeling.

Trial is a singular fight against a single boss.
There are two different types of Raids.
One is a 24 man where you progress through areas where you have 6-8 fights not unlike Trial fights.
The other is an 8 man as well, typically released along with 3 others, connected by a side story that is a part of 12 total raids.

        Anonymous

ignore what the other two guys said
trials and raids are not different except for alliance raid, which is a 24 man dungeon
it's just that some trials are unlocked from the story content and some are side content
        otherwise identical

There's also minigames like races or fashion shows.
There's housing and decorating that housing.
    There's fishing.

The base game is shit. I quit for a year until I happened to catch a streamer in the first expansion, where I saw the game actually goes somewhere interesting.
It's insane they haven't done afull revamp of ARR yet, just tiny cuts of extra quests. It's still bloated and dull.
I say this as someone who thinks 14's OVERALL story is amazing. I'll be surprised if you get past the base game without having friends already playing to keep you motivated, a lot of people cut out before then.

Don't build high expectations about the racing, like I said, it's mostly a minigame. A minigame you can invest a good few hours into but eventually you'll be done with it.

You don't understand anon. There are no hard fights in FF14 because the "difficulty" comes from half your party members being unable to follow simple directions, tell left from right, or having internet so shitty they aren't able to dodge red circles on the floor.

There's the races, the fashion show, Triple Triad (card game), mahjong, obstacle jumping courses, stuff about dodging aoes, lord of verminion which is like a tower defense game of sorts, and a bunch of lesser minigames I can't remember right now.

        >if it gets too boring I will probably quit,
FFXIV is one of those games that's unironically like
        >"Dude, just play it for 150 hours, then it starts to get good"
And I say that as someone that's been playing it since 2016. Just an honest assessment. The level 1-50 campaign is just not that good. There's also alot of stuff you can't do because things unlock based on the main campaign progress. But once you get to Heavensward, the game gets better and better and the payoff is huge by the time you finish Shadowbringers.

If you can survive to Heavensward, you'll be rewarded. But I, personally, would not judge you for quitting before that. Because it is a slog to get to the really good stuff.

the thing is the mmo label has been obfuscated so far that people come into ffxiv thinking it's really a MMO like New World or Runescape only to find out it's just a glorified single player game with mid combat and occasional co-op content

As someone who played FFXI starting in the beta in 2003ish and put tens of thousands of hours into it over the years I'd have to very much disagree with that. In it's golden years format the game is far too difficult for the average person today, you can even see how private servers that try to emulate this period of the game still don't do it accurately, they apply all sorts of "QoL" features that make it easier. FFXI is a great game, my favorite experience of all time, but it wouldn't do well today.

Why is 11 not even halfway as popular, though?

It's 21 years old and it was very popular for it's time, it even lived through the release of you-know-what in 2004 and it's sub numbers didn't flinch. The issue is that over the years the MMO genre became bloated thanks to that other title and it's once amazing sub numbers looked small by comparison. Also SE themselves tried to kill the game off to promote XIV so that didn't help.

              >the game is far too difficult for the average person today

I use that as a blanket term, XI required an immense amount of time investment as well as a heavy reliance on people having to talk to eachother. Learning your job wasn't about pressing buttons in the right order (Not that i dislike XIV) but it was about understanding a million different nuances to any situation you could find yourself in, managing a dozen timers, controlling and understanding the invisible threat system, and adapting to a somewhat random fight scenario/timeline. You can handle a lot of this with the modern obsession with addons but you can't cut that time investment down no matter how hard you try.

The main issue you'd run into is modern gamers not understanding that it's about the journey and not the reward, that time investment is what makes the game fun.

          Anonymous

because it plays like an old school mmo and not a WoW clone that XIV and most post-2005 MMOs ended up turning into

no is just simply social climates changing, 20 years ago people were used to experimental mechanics in mmos and nowadays people are more used to fetch quest story-based mmos because this generation finds it more relaxing
neither game went the wrong route and both are great games for niche reasons, but as someone already posted SE personally left 11 in the dust because of 14 being the safer investment, which almost backfired but it's whatever

Oh yeah, be warned OP that all of the game's combat jobs are EXTREMELY simplistic until like level 60. Expect to mash the same 3 button combo for a long time at the start of the game.

Jobs as in ffv jobs? Do you choose your job when you make your character or do you distribute stats?

24 mans have a lot of slack. 18+ people can die simultaneously and you can still clear if at least one good healer and a sentient tank survive (such as my last hashmal fight).

        No stats here.
You choose your class when you start, which turns into a job at 30.
Then you can also play other classes, which also turn into jobs.
        Only for ARR, though.
Post-ARR jobs (Dark Knight, Machinist, Samurai, Red Mage, Dancer, Gunbreaker, Sage, Reaper, etc.) just start as their respective jobs.

You pick a class in character creation. Classes upgrade to jobs at level 30. You can play every job on one class so what you pick doesn't matter. No stat allocation.

And to iterate further on this, to give an idea how pansy-ass difficulty the main story is: You can do all of the dungeons in the game without a tank if you so desired. That's how weak everything hits.

You pick a class in character creation. Classes upgrade to jobs at level 30. You can play every job on one class so what you pick doesn't matter. No stat allocation.

        Anonymous

It depends on what you're used to.
There are some normal trials that at least require you to pay attention, but if you are looking for poopsock autism-level difficulty, it's savage and especially ultimates.

        Anonymous

        >I see a shitload of buttons, can you even play this shit with a controller?
Yes. I've always played with a controller since the start. Make sure you go into settings and enable crosspad or whatever it's called - to use skills on controller, you hold down LT or RT and press either A, B, X, Y or Up, Down, Left, Right on directional pad. Cross-thing lets you hold RT then LT at the same time to open up an additional set of skills, and also LT then RT to open another set.
They regularly remove skills that are unused or no longer needed when they update jobs (both in patches and when new expansions drop) so you will always have enough space to equip all skills required in your rotation, plus other actions the job may have that you occasionally use or shortcuts to useful things such as sprinting or riding your mount.
Remember that this is also on consoles, so they design the game in a way that it can be played easily with either controller or kb/m. Can even tab target on controller, just like a kb.

A dumb thing SE introduced this expac. Normally you'd have the search info of a player which showed their faction affilitation, class levels, and a little comment. Adventure Plates is that same information but more graphical/customizable, with a photo portrait of your character that you can pose and frame for others to see.

Most people who stick do tend to level all the jobs, but it's not what keeps people around for years. Not actually sure how long it takes from start to finish, but everyone who is around for an expansion probably has done it within that expansion's lifecycle.

              >to level up all their classes?
People who keep up on the shit tend to re-level everything within a given expansion, since they typically add 10 levels to the cap, and your daily roulette bonuses (random dungeon selection within a given category) are enough experience to guarantee a level at day for the most part.

Crafting, PvP, checking up on my island, hunt trains, deep dungeons. Occasionally if there’s a lull I’ll do old content to farm for collectible drops like mounts, minions and, TT cards with my FC(guild). There were big endgame zones with unique grinds the last two expansions that I spent a lot of time in, they’re still fun to do now. I don’t do the hard bosses usually because I don’t have a group and dealing with morons in random PUGs is exhausting

How do you get an island and what can you do in it?

What are hunt trains and deep dungeons?

        Anonymous

You have to complete the story up to the latest expansion. It’s kind of an idle minigame where you set up a farm and workshops to earn a currency to get mounts and outfits and stuff.

          Anonymous

          Island is post 6.0
Think of it as Animal Crossing with better graphics, and a bit of automation.

Anytime you hear trains, outside of the Haunted train fight, it is probably going to be a player group working together on a group of targets, or general group pursuit. In this case, a Hunt train would be a group running around the world, chasing hunt targets.

Deep dungeons are tangentially story driven areas comprised of 10 levels that do higher and higher, but are primarily available to be rereun to provide quick exp to help level up a combat class if you need to.

6.0 means what? Is it like base game is 1.0 and after first expansion is 2.0 and so on?

You said hunts, are they like ff12 hunts or how do they work and what do you get from them?

Also about crafting....what do you do with the shit you craft? Obviously weapons for my characters but like can I sell it?

            Anonymous

1.0 would be the base game, but 1.0 FFXIV was such a complete mess that someone else had to take it over and remake it almost entirely.
2.0 is now the base game, A Realm Reborn.
            3.0 is Heavensward
            4.0 is Stormblood
            5.0 is Shadowbringers
            6.0 is Endwalker
Every expansion has 5 big patches in between, so 3.5 for example.

            Anonymous

            >6.0 means what?
1.0 is the original game. It's unavailable to be played at this point. If you download the game and start playing today, you will begin in 2.0, the "A Realm Reborn" restart/expansion of the game. After it and the follow up patches would come 3.0, Heavensward, 4.0, Stormblood, 5.0, Shadowbringers, and 6.0, Endwalker. Island Sanctuary is not available until you have completed the primary Endwalker campaign.

I was under the impression that Hunts always functioned like this is FF. There is an especially strong enemy compared to the rest that can be found out in the wild, and you receive a reward after you are able to put it down.

All of the attack animations are like they're attacking a stick of butter. I just mainly miss 1.0's pacing and grounded world. Everything else about it can frick off though, especially the unfinished state it launched at where it was levequests-or-bust, thanks to half of the caves/dungeons being inaccessible, and no real outdoor content at the time besides grinding mobs and gathering nodes.

            >You said hunts, are they like ff12 hunts or how do they work and what do you get from them?

They’re moderately powerful world bosses that spawn based on different conditions. What most people do is join a >discord and wait for someone to scout out everything from the current expansion and then organize a giant group to blaze through and obliterate them all. You get tokens for endgame gear and another hunt specific currency for other random shit.

It's a pain in the ass in tab-target to target the center-most enemy in a pack for AoE skills. Better off clicking directly with a mouse, or just playing a game that lets you be targetless with commands in general.

asiatics somehow manage to make good combat MMOs at the cost of everything else. New World is another example where combat was good but everything else was complete shit, but at least it serves as a good proof of concept that action MMOs can work.

Too much work to balance around + requires higher server resources to actively maintain decent tick rate for action combat, which means less money from having to host more servers for less players.

yeah, from what i've learned, private servers do their best to emulate the game but there's a lot of stuff they had to reverse engineer that doesn't work, but since I never played the game until playing it on a private server I'm still loving it.

better than a dead server or a server with dual boxing. There's really no argument to be had against what I'm saying here as ff11 does not have a p99 equivalent.

It's the closest private server that exists today. A populated server is a huge thing of what made FFXI what it was and there's no other server that offers that at the moment.

        'Was' the perfect MMO.

Unrelated to that, I find it stupid the character-creator models for XI are both lower poly and lower-texture resolution than an ARR character model, but look vastly more competent.

          Anonymous

It's because the overall design and artstyle of FFXI was so strong. There's a reason a lot of the monsters in XIV are literal up-ressed assets from FFXI.

It's weird. Normally I'd be pretty bummed about asset re-use but I can kind of give a pass to Final Fantasy because the designs are so iconic. It's the same I feel about Dragon Quest.

If I had to knock FFXI, I was always upset they didn't use the iconic Cactuar design.

                >but I can kind of give a pass to Final Fantasy because the designs are so iconic.
There's a difference between reusing a design and then flat out lifting the older model.

Eg. XIV1.0 had XI's Qiqirn design, but it was a completely new model built to XIV1.0's rendering budget.

                Anonymous

On the upside, XI had Cactuar that remained scary for the longest fricking time since its HP levels were kept sane for a good 15 years, meaning 1000 Needles was lethal to a lot of classes unless you had other people nearby to help soak it.

Hrothgar - Furry cat/lion people, not to be confused with miqo'te, the humans with cat ears (requires Shadowbringers)

Cosmetic. Doesn't change how you play a job, or your stats.
You can't switch races on the fly. You need a Fantasia for that, which are from the shop.
But finishing A Realm Reborn gives you one free Fantasia.

The races have different starting stats but they are meaningless, just play what you want. You need a fantasia to change race which you buy on the cash shop. But you get one free fantasia at the end of ARR.

              Cool cool

Soooo is the combat good? Are there like elemental weakness or whats the deal?

You just do your skills in the right order and dodge the bosses attacks. The most important thing to not be shot is always be pressing a button that does damage when one is available. There’s more optimization with timing big attacks during buff windows but you won’t get to any content where that matters until much later.

People here are saying the combat is braindead but every screenshot I see has like 30 fricking buttons on screen

what do they even do then? Why are there so fricking many?

      Anonymous

They say that because while there are a lot of buttons, once you learn your rotation, its just pressing them in order with little variety. At least for damage dealers. tanks and healers adjust their abilities to the situation.

      Anonymous

In many cases, you have basically a steady rotation and the extra buttons are off-global cooldowns you weave in between.
Then you have a few utility ones, like self-heals, mitigations, etc.

      Anonymous

They do any number of things.
They can attack a target, or many targets, weaken a target, strengthen you or an ally, heal you or an ally, make you run, use a limit break, teleport anywhere, teleport to one particular place for free once every 15 minutes, use items, summon a minion or a mount, or a companion chocobo, etc. When you start the game, you will reasonably only have one attack button. Everything else that you've seen became available somewhere between lvl 1 and 90, by leveling a character, or just learning about abilities available at lvl 1 regardless of the job you're playing, or others you are able to do an unlock quest to get along the way.

      Anonymous

this is not a single player game.
      that means:
      in easy content,
      your contribution is entirely irrelevant.
you can smash your literal wiener on the keyboard and be fine.
      and at a high level,
it means that you are expected, by other humans in your party, to perform optimally or at the very least decently.
which in turn means that there's no room for creativity and unique playstyles but rather everyone plays the same way pressing the same buttons in the same order over and over again.

Y'know, if there is a new FF MMO in our lifetimes, it'll probably have New World-like combat.
And it's going to be funny to have another "THIS IS NOT MY REAL FF" type shitfest where the overton window has shifted so as to make XIV out to be true FF-like just to shit on the new kid on the block instead.

This is a fun thing to think about because of how random SE can be.

      >Randomly made FFXI, a mainline FF MMO that was incredibly hardcore
      >Even though it's doing well they try to push it aside and make a new one
      >Treat XI like an outcast for no apparent reason for over a decade
      >Gamble the company on re-making XIV after it flops hard
      >Won't put any real money back into XIV despite it gaining momentum and the MMO genre being void of any competition
      >People ask for more accessibility to XI, their response is to put it on maintenance mode
      >MMO genre as of 2023 is pretty bleak

You could make the argument for them to make a new one or to not make a new one and all of it would make sense because of their past decision making.

it becomes harder to figure out where safe spots are, and it becomes more punishing for failure

also, the key difference between difficulty tiers is if you can kill other people by making mistakes and how recoverable those mistakes are. 24 man content you can survive with just a few competent people as almost all mechanics are individual

Doing rotation and damage while dealing with mechanics, punishment for mistakes is severe and an enrage timer so you can't just stall the fight.

Since Emet created the crystal and those crystals are used to awaken memories of their perspective convocation members then shouldn't WoL get some memories of Azem?

      Anonymous

No because he created the crystal in secret and Azem never lent their memories to it

        Anonymous

Weren't the crystals made post sundering and by the 3 remaining unsundered? The other convocation members would not have been able to give their memories since they already sundered

          Anonymous

Obviously not or the only ascins you would ever see are the unsundered ones. They excluded Azem because he/she had already stepped down from the convocation before they made the crystals.

Do I play this through Steam or its own launcher?

      Anonymous

Its own launcher is what most people will tell you.

      Anonymous

SE launcher is preferred if possible. Steam can have problems. Whatever you choose, you have to stick with

I use the steam version but renew my sub through the website

      Anonymous

Steam or launcher have no difference whatsoever.
BUT you can use steam wallet to purchase stuff if you get in on steam, it's a matter of whats more convenient to you really.

      Anonymous

Steam will launch the game launcher, cheaper to buy through steam, you can also use the steam wallet to pay for the monthly subscription, I cancelled mine in March tho so I might be wrong.

      Anonymous

Never use the steam version because you'll miss out on discounts from the Square Enix store and the Mog Station items if you ever feel like buying those.

        Anonymous

bullshit for the mog station items
you can buy those at any price they are discounted at with steam wallet.

You just won't be able to buy shit at Square store, like merchandise or discounted xpacs, but then, xpacs get discounts at steam during sales so meh

      Anonymous

Use the launcher unless you live in South America, in which case you might get a discount on your subscription if you use steam (depending on the country)

i don't see anything posing a real threat to the wol in 7.0, the power creep has gone too far. it's over for this game. shadowbringer and endwalker ultimates will be kino though. maybe they make an ultimate comprised of all the ultimates, not sure what they would call that difficulty.

The next threat will be to stop Alisaie's stalker in Sharlayan from ruining her and the WoL's wedding

    >So what can you do in this game?
Eureka and Bozja grind, running deep dungeons.
Those zones were mostly dead and they have a cadre of gatekeepers on troony discords ( troony flags, troony callers for the raids in it BA/DR DRS ).
The FIRST JOB ( or two depending on how many dungeons you queue for ) you level up will be through the MSQ ( main story quest ), after that, the BEST AND FASTEST way to level up other jobs, is to use the hunter log and quests to get to level 30, then you go to the Palace of the Dead savepoint run from 30 to level 61, after that you go to the Heaven on High savepoint from level 61 to level 71, then, from level 71 you stay in Bozja until level 81 and from 81 to 90 you can go to the latest released deep dungeon.
    A) The game is full of bots and cheaters, you are supposed to overlook them.
    B) The game is full of trannies, you're supposed to make believe they are sane individuals and treat them as a special class.
    C) The moderation in that game is extremely low brow, they persecute people for no reason, and if people, even with stuff from outside of the game, report you for some kind of behavior that goes against the TOS, you will get your account deleted, regardless of if you paid the full price for the game and the monthly fee.

      Never did this.

      Never happened to me.

play the game until you get to ifrit (the fire demon dude) you will be around level 20-30.
if you are bored of the gameplay after that, you can safely stop.
you get your mount after this and there is larger group content at level 50, but the core gameplay stays the same, albeit with a more fleshed out class with more abilities

Just play the msq up until end of endwalker (not the post patches we are in now).
Avoid as much of the social/mmo aspect as you can and quit/delete the game as soon as the story is done.
The game is finished no matter how much the cultists say otherwise.

great, so no need to argue about whether or not xiv is a real mmo because mmos are a shitty dead genre anyways

XIV isn't an MMO, that's why it's so popular. MMOs are a shit genre nobody wants to play so XIV became successful by minimizing the MMO aspects as much as possible.
