DQ12 is a disaster

You may have noticed Squares usual constant drop of DQ spin offs and side games have stopped. Thats because all possible hands are on deck to try and make Dragon Quest 12 not be a total disaster.

The goal was a dark and serious game "because westerners like Dark Souls and Game of Thrones" to try and get a wider target audience. This did not go as planned. They spent a full 9 months just trying to make a Slime and Dracky look "adult" and the best they got was something that looked like if the FFXIII art team tried to design a model for Twilight Princess. To say nothing of characters that have repeatedly alternated between "more Majin Bu era Dragonball" Toriyama influenced designs and realistic designs comparable to the characters in FFXVI. However XVI's underperformance has lead to a current shift back to a more Toriyama inspired design. Which means EVERY model is going through its minimum 7th "final" revision.

The game is an action combat game comparable to Final Fantasy Remake/Rebirth with some elements inspired by Breath of the Wild such as a stamina wheel for climbing.

The game has been restarted four times and the current build is not generating positive responses internally. This is why every other project like the Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D remake have been shelved.

Don't be surprised when this underperforms and we see DQ13 look like DQ11. At this point Square just seems to want this mistake put out to make any return on investment so they can put out a traditional DQ as soon as possible.

    Find this hard to believe.

You can have the old art style and still be dark and serious, you just be dark and serious through the writing. The characters, the story, the quests.

People associate Toriyama's art style with the series, and even older games could do dark and serious at points without compromising the other stuff.

Nah, I call fake. I expect when it was announced, it was literally greenlit a week prior and had next to no work done, so the whole time has just been pure development.

Granted I never played IV, VII, or IX, but pretty much all the others aren’t that dark at all. People will sometimes die but the whole thing is rendered in a cartoony way. They’re plots that conceivably could have been communicated on the SNES. That’s why DQ fans like the series.

The announcement of DQXII was incredibly vague and had nothing to really latch onto.
It's why people saying it will be an action game expose themselves as the biggest newbies of all, because "changing the gameplay" can be applied to most DQ games comparative to their prior entries.
        DQ1 was a 1v1 JRPG.
DQ2 introduced the party system, completely changing how you engage with the gameplay.
DQ3 introduced the jobs mechanic and expanded the party, completely changing how you engage with the gameplay.
DQ4 utilized a consistent larger party you'd switch out, introduced tactics, and the first four chapters of the game are all individual adventures instead of the game being one straight adventure, completely changing how you engage with the gameplay.
DQ5 added the monster recruitment mechanic and abandoned the consistent party idea, completely changing how you engage with the gameplay.
DQ6 introduced a wide variety of recruitable characters and expanded the monster recruitment to the point where you can recruit an optional high level boss, and added the vocation system.
DQ7 greatly expanded the vocation system and changed the game from exploring the whole world to exploring separate continents using fragments.
DQ8 was the first fully 3D game, it introduced an automap, and it added smaller additions like tension or alchemy.
DQ9 and 10 are blatantly some of the most different games in the series.
DQ11 is really the only one that can feel kind of "samey" in regards to gameplay, and even then that is almost exclusively to the 3DS version of DQ8.

If I were to address an issue with the series it would be the tonal whiplash and lack of variety when it comes to music. The games already do serious stories but the happy town music keeps on playing during sad or intense sequences, it's pretty jarring. I think this was what really stopped me from getting into the series. Like most kids getting into RPGs in the 90’s I was naturally more inclined to FF because of the 3rd person camera in combat to show more action, but I still played DQ 1&2 on the GB, then III as well once that released. By the time I got around to VIII since I somehow never saw VII, I was just unimpressed by the OST. There were some standout tracks of course, but by and large it was exactly what you’re describing. In FF you were hearing a wild variety of tunes that evoked tons of emotion, but in DQ it was like hearing town music everywhere.

            Anonymous

Doesn't change the fact that DQ did start in the West first.
My point wasn't "Oh no, why isn't DQ successful", the reality is just that FF had more edge at a time when Americans wanted edge. It fell off as it became more traditionally Japanese at a time when Americans were rejecting Japanese games.

              Anonymous

I was making a point by choosing to use the word "presentation". Americans then, and even now, want to be able to see their own characters and watch them perform actions; like action-figures against a fantasy themed backdrop. In Dragon Warrior, it is just menus and a screen of the monster unmoving other than the timely flash of their attack; versus Final Fantasy's view of the entire party against a potential crowd of enemies. Right away, the latter is a more exciting and cinematic experience for the viewer.

I don't think you understand just how much of DQ is filled with very specific turns of phrases and puns that make a lot of the dialog virtually impossible to translate without losing the intent. You can cry all day about shit like this but if the game was "localized" the way you seemingly want, it would be an incoherent mess.

The accents are based as frick. I wish more games did more to differentiate between certain cultures/kingdoms etc within their own games.
It's more immersive and feels more alive, just like when authors do it in books for a specific character with a heavy accent.
Or when accents are chosen for reasons in shows. Quite frankly I don't understand why out of all media consumption Video Games have the biggest blandest mouthbreathers.

might be because with TV/movies you can just pump out live shows and reality TV ad nauseum to distract them from complaining about other content, while games take a while more to produce, develop and get out. Meanwhile mouthbreathers don't even bother with books.

It works plenty in real life, they're inspired based off cultures/architecture and society in those areas. A majority of the Japanese names for places/people and locations in Dragon Quest exist to specifically convey the point to Japanese people.
In Japan, Camus's name for example in Japan heavily relates to a specific European culture, but in the west we wouldn't have that same distinction immediately for the name Camus. Erik gets the point across much better for what they want you to relate Erik's character to.

There are things that can be directly translated and things that can't. Accents and puns don't work well and you are better off looking for some cultural equivalent (requiring a decent grasp of both cultures). Cultural and historical references can be kept intact, it's exotic and interesting. Names of characters and places can also be kept as they are (unless they are puns). The rest can be kept as it is. Some localizers complain about Japanese being a dry language and end up disrespecting the original writer's vision with their fanfic shit.

                Anonymous

When the original writing says "the curtains are blue" and the localization isn't "the curtains are blue". Translations of intent should be saved for situations where a literal translation isn't possible. You are not the writer, you will never be the writer. You do not live in their head to know if "curtains" really meant curtains or if "blue" was some metaphor for early 20th century Koreans or whatever. It's for the best to respect the writer's intent as much as possible because that's what people bought the game for, not your own original story on top of their story.

Localizers have already gone on record talking about "fixing" the original script, imposing their own visions, values, etc. This goes as far back as the NES when the names of towns got changed because "it was too silly". Who are they to define what's silly? Can I also import their books and change terms to accomodate my own culture's sensibilities? Is it really a cultural thing and not just me treating my own individual, subjective views as an objective form of measurement? These are all things that should be taken into consideration when it comes to localization, to avoid imposing and respecting the writer's work.

And you bought it, however you seem to have bought the wrong language option. Localizations, different voice actors, etc all cost money, and therefore the Japanese version will be a different copy than the English one.

You however seem to not be an informed consumer, as you made the mistake to purchase the NA version of the game, when you clearly wanted the Japanese version of the game, and refused to put in the research to get the copy of the game you wanted.

Final Fantasy. Fire Emblem at least has good gameplay and good stories (but never at the same time lol), DQ still releases good games even if they aren't as imaginative as they once were, and Xenoblade is being made by talented devs.

But final fantasy? Game after game, year after year they're just an utter embaressment that makes all of their old games look worse with their disgusting shit. Their writing has become terrible, their character designs have no soul anymore, their gameplay keeps getting trimmed down into the most braindead action possible. Action combat is meant to be engaging by being fast instead of deep, they trade all of the depth and variety from their older games for the worst action combat I've ever seen. The series has virtually no redeeming qualities left and even their desperate rehash of VII is just making a worse copy of the original that barely sells anymore.

I haven't played their MMO so I don't know if it suffers the same problems as their mainline games, but XIV was dogshit and it was made by the same guy so I can't imagine its much more interesting.

Because it missed the SNES and almost the whole PS1 console cycle. Dragon Warrior IV came out in 1992 when people already moved onto the SNES and Genesis, and the next game was Dragon Warrior VII in 2001 when the Dreamcast and PS2 was already out. It couldn't establish itself unlike Final Fantasy which had FFIV and VI for the SNES along with VII, VII, and IX for the PS1. So Dragon Quest failed to ingrain itself to be a classic series outside of Japan because it was absent for so long and when the games got localized people already moved on from the console.

If people like SNES Breath of Fire or Earthbound, I'm sure they'd hail Dragon Quest V and VI as a classic. It's just that Enix was way too slow to localize anything or they never localized games. Dragon Warrior II came out in 1990, the Genesis was already out and the SNES was around the corner. DWIII and IV came out the same year when you already have more powerful consoles. Let me ask you, who was going to play these games? People already moved onto 16 bit consoles. Then they missed the whole 16 bit era, and then they finally released a RPG when the PS2 was out in the west.

You cannot tell me the time a game releases won't contribute to people playing it or not. Ristar came at the end of the Genesis, but hardly anyone played it back then because people moved onto 5th gen. The PS1 was already out in 1995.

Dragon Quest V and especially VI had no chance in hell of doing well.
DQ up to that point was seen as “those games” on the NES. Just some generic adventure titles, like King’s Quest for babies. DQV would have nothing going for it- it looked like a NES game, most of its notable gameplay changes occur several hours in, the first hour is spent walking around and talking while your dad plays the game for you, it was not a game that would succeed. Even recent word of mouth hype it gets is framed entirely around how the STORY “gets good, nothing about the mechanics or gameplay, and any DQ fan worth their salt knows the opening is pretty lackluster for an actual video game.

The harsh reality is that DQ isn’t and will never be successful in the west. English speaking audiences just don’t care. Maybe it’s bad luck, maybe DQ just isn’t as appealing as FF’s constant melodrama.

They were actually considering localizing the SNES version of DQ6 as "Dragon Warrior V"(they were going to skip over DQ5 entirely), but Enix America closed up shop before they could release it.
And VI is one of the least popular Dragon Quest games, so it's funny to envision an alternate reality where it's the most nostalgiagayged amongst western audiences.

Dragon Quest II is an improvement upon the first game. Bigger party, bigger battles, and a bigger world while you still do similar things. I'm playing Dragon Quest VIII right now and it's a slog compared to DQII. It loves to waste your time. You go out to do one thing and it ends up being a chain quest to just do it. DQII is straight forward, you just go to the place without any detours. Then you have the DQI game progression with items and hints telling you how to unlock new areas in old towns and of course traveling the world and obtaining hints where the four sigils are at. Compared to DQVIII and how railroaded it is in its theme park experience.

I heard the series became more story focused and linear at around V. If so then that's a shame.

              >I heard the series became more story focused and linear at around V. If so then that's a shame.
Yes it started exactly at 5 and the series never recovered since.
4 at least did something interesting with the beginning chapters, and then chapter 5 played out closer to DQ2/3. With DQ5 they set out with the goal of leading the player from point setpiece A to setpiece B the entire game, much like your average JRPG, for a story that really isn't that amazing outside of a few striking scenes. They tried to correct this approach in DQ6 with the more hands-off approach and exploration that gradually opened up but the series never attempted to expand on DQ2 and 3 after that.
Romancing SaGa 1 did a much better job of carrying the spirit of early DQ with more ambitious campaign progression and it came out months before DQ5.

Square is totally clueless so I don't doubt the OP is correct.
Just make a decent fricking turn-based battle and tell a simple new story about a hero bringing peace to a kingdom full of problems. How hard is it to do something like that? You just need a few charismatic characters and some cute girls and that's it.
Dragon Quest's battle, contrary to what people think, is perfectly acceptable and allows room for a certain strategy when the player is playing with restrictions, so it's not as if they needed to change much, but anyway, turn-based battles are on the rise again, so there's no excuse for creating a ridiculous button-mashing system.

Because as I said, it's something I'd expect from Square-Enix, especially as they've said they want to do something "mature", when Dragon Quest isn't "childish" in the first place. There's a difference between a light theme that doesn't try to appeal to melodrama to make misfortunes seem more terrible and sad than they really are, and a childish theme.

It had more practical use in base DQ11 when speedup didn't exist. If you used free form and moved melee-acting characters close to their target, the game would automatically select the target for you and the characters' attack animations would be shorter (in addition to not jumping back and forth).
Of course DQ11S added speedup so there's less reason to use it there, but in base 11 it improved the pacing of fights drastically.

As mentioned by a previous poser, the DQ series has always been more forward looking and willing to change than what its reputation is, even though it stopped being super innovative after DQV. DQXI is the first game in the series which you can call JRPG comfort food, and if they serve the same comfort food twice in a row people are going to start complaining.

It's a good blend of action and ATB strategy, you got control over multiple party members that all have an unique playstyle and you can issue commands to them during battle. It got all the hallmarks of a proper party-based RPG while also being an action game. You can even turn off the action portion if you only wanna focus on the strategy.

No they are not. Every character having some homosexual accent just makes the game annoying to read. Maybe if you're dyslexic and have a hard time reading in the first place. No videogame dialogue accented or not should get you that worked up.
The accents are actually part of the charm in itself.
It's hilarious you can sit there and consume this game that has toriyamas silly art style and over the top flourishes in visual story telling alone that the localization triggers you that bad.

I actually really can't understand the cognitive dissonance you have between them.

          Anonymous

Yes because it's not only the localization that "triggers" me. It's the blatant changes used in said localizations. People like you that defend this crap and use excuses like toriyama's "silly" artstyle don't like these games. Do you even like jap media to begin with? Why defend the molestation of something you like? Especially when they rewrite entire parts like sylvia's character.

            Anonymous

Because, I like them for what they are. Meanwhile you're out here sucking the cum dry from the balls of a culture you yourself will never have a true understanding of in a language you self admitted to not being fluent in.

There is no molestation. Molestation would imply no consent. The localizers were chosen by square, Hired to translate the works, and spread them across the globe.

Molestation again, would imply done against the will etc. I'm certain you'll see no complaints about the localized versions of DQ from the creators of DQ.

Your entire slam on localization is entirely based in your false believe of the "superiority" of Japanese culture and the mere fact your precious moonrunes were sullied by a translation meant to reach the audience of the West with the same intended message.

That said in itself, feel free to tell me over and over again how the localization is the devil's work and you can never truly understand unless you read Japanese, and how these games marketed to an audience of all ages and written directly to be accessible to kids as young as toddlers have a message and story I simply won't be able to appreciate because it just doesn't exist in the localization.

All weeb gate keeping elitist propaganda.
The phrase lost in translation exists and localizers exist to provide that gap in cultural context.

All I know is I'm certainly enjoying the game more than you are.

Not to mention how can you be enjoying them more than me when I'm playing them in jap and getting the intended story and experience out of them. If you want to see what I mean go try out the V PS2 translation. That one is so cleanly done that It's helped inspire some guys I know to learn to language.

Isn't that more embarrassing? A game meant for children and old men has to get altered hard for american audiences? I don't get what you're fighting about here. There's no point in defending the work of people who don't like the respect the source material.

Forgot to mention. You are not getting the same story and "intended" message because these games are being altered out of the gate. I don't care if you like it. It's not what was intended and at many points it's the fanfiction of some localizer who is lashing out at never becoming a writer. Dragon quest isn't a big series in the west. There is no point in arguing like this. I just wish that instead of eating it up, you would want more and a proper telling of the story you are buying.

I just think FF10 in 2001 was the beginning of the end while DQ8 in 2004 was the start of the games getting much better and better.

FF is millennialcore tho, zoomers don't give two fricks about it.

Despite having a minor in English language arts your comparison of "it's saying you like to eat shit to own others." isn't even frankly apt in the example.

None of them have good gameplay, the job systems are all fricked up in some way, particularly in 9 which is hamstrung by its desire to be some weird pseudo-MMO grindfest thing. DQ7 is worth playing for the writing though, some of the best storytelling in all of gaming.

      >DQ6
Boring as frick but the dream gimmick can be fun if you get into it. The worst vocation system in the franchise.
      >DQ7
70+ hours of absolute padding. The 3DS version adds QOL but get ready to climb the same tower 5 times. Time travel is actually pretty good but the quality of the scenarios ranges a lot. Vocation system is slightly less worse but expect to grind if you want any of the lategame vocations.
      >DQ9
Diet coke 3. It's great if you enjoy making your own characters and visible equipment is fun to play around with. Makes vocations less annoying.

Got it. I've played DQ 1 - 5 and I wasn't sure if I was super interested in those three games in particular. I think I'm just gonna play 8 and 11 whenever I feel like actually playing those games. I don't want to play more DS games and I don't care about playing the original versions either (I played the PS2 version of DQ5 and liked it).

              Anonymous

I recommend playing 6 (ds), 9, 7 (3ds), 8 (3ds) and 11, in that order. You'll get a more gradual upgrade in how the games look. They are all self contained stories so there's no problem in beating them out of order. There are also patches for the 3ds games that restore the orchestral music (3ds uses midi), censored costumes (8) and even an undub if you're into that.

                >8 (3ds)

Even with mods it still has worse audio and really ugly graphics. The VO and visuals are a huge part of that game's appeal and the 3DS port butchers it quite badly. Just emulate the PS2 version, there's no reason not to play it instead.

And you bought it, however you seem to have bought the wrong language option. Localizations, different voice actors, etc all cost money, and therefore the Japanese version will be a different copy than the English one.

You however seem to not be an informed consumer, as you made the mistake to purchase the NA version of the game, when you clearly wanted the Japanese version of the game, and refused to put in the research to get the copy of the game you wanted.

        intro way too long
        drags
keifer goes bye bye way too quick leaving you with a party of 3 for too long
by the time aishe shows up Mervyn has pretty well cemented himself in your party
        story far too episodic
macro story doesnt reveal itself til the final 4-5 hours of the game
        fragment finding
episode story wears out its welcome after the first town
way too much back and forth quests
hero has a family, story doesnt really do anything with it
7 makes a lot of the exact same mistakes as 6 but with just slightly more guidance. Unlocking the map feels real cool for a minute but its simply too long and the 10-15 hours before the vocation system make it not worthy of replay.

The first DQ I played was VII on the 3DS and I was really enamored with how all the islands were its own little real life country equivalent, and the accents really added to that. I didn't even believe at first when I heard that the original Japanese didn't have it, it is just so natural and seamless an addition that it's hard to imagine the game having the same tone of being a globe trotting adventure without it. Maybe that's why Japan got exhausted of it so easily because it doesn't have that distinction between areas?

Anyway, I went on to play to play all the DQs after that so... at least from my experience the idea that its keeping anyone away is dubious. I haven't played X but I will soon one of these days, I'll need to get a VPN though.
I'll admit the area for the first part of 4 was an annoying one though. I'll give them a break on that though, it was their first try.

Another special mention to Hoto and the mermaids in XI, another couple of areas that it's also almost hard to believe weren't in the original due to the amount of personality that blends in with the game. Man they were fun.

japs literally didnt finish 7 because it was boring. Im not a localization defender but a bunch of towns where everyone plain speaks the most literal forward pointing dialogue sounds more exhausting than " 'Ello guv!"

That is damn lie. VII was bought by 1 million people in japan alone. It's highly regarded and loved. Same reason why they remade IV in the VII engine. What you call "exhausting" is proper and how it should be left.

I'm not actually European enough to know how accurate that map is, but enough into history to know they have like 200 different languages and even more dialects.

England itself has to my limited knowledge no fewer than 6 accents, Im sure some english/scottish/irish guy is laughing at me and is gonna say "more like 50"

I also just copied and pasted the most variety I found in the first 20 seconds on a google search to make the point. Don't even think I looked at engurland when i googled it.
but that is the point I was trying to make

Let me put it this way, my parents grew up in towns 20 minutes apart, same county. Different dialects, different euphemisms. England is fricking surreal, but thousands of years of isolation and shit like the saxons killing people who walked off the road for 'spying'.
Ironically most of them are dying off now because of the internet, mass communication, easy travel. C'est la vie.
Funny thing, Shakespeare spoke and wrote his plays in a really regional accent, there's puns in the scripts that only work in his dialect.
Otherwise dw about it anon, if you're curious you're not ignorant.

homie the map is the entire planet. there isnt some beyond the horizon far away land. Not to mention Jolly ole engerlund has like 15 different dialects

And the game doesn't take place in "engurlund" it takes place in the fictional kingdom.

It takes place in a globe of continents.
The 3rd games map was literally almost 1 for 1 with Earth.

              >They don't do that in the jap releases.
There isn't an equivalent to it in Japan, and culturally it wouldn't fit in right.
However outside of Jipang and it's equivalents in other games, a majority of cultures/architecture etc is inspired by European/middle eastern aesthetics.

youre missing the point. On a globe where 30 different provinces exist and at different times all mostly unified by english, you can be sure theyd all have different accents

I think it makes sense. Not only are they fairly isolated but they're practically in different dimensions. If they didn't speak different from everyone else in the past they sure would when they come back in the future after getting generations of isolation.

Not that I even care so much about finding an excuse for it, I'm not looking for anthropological accuracy, it just has to be fun. And it is an entire globe.

That is the only decent part, otherwise the story is pretty minimal

Monster variety between areas should've been higher.
It's insane how many monsters are in the game, but how many parents you have to breed towards.

Fricking this. And trying to breakthrough to a higher rank monster is tedious as hell without guides.

my wife got it for me on switch, it looks and runs like shit. On yuzu however its probably my favorite dqm game

Really? Damn. The stuttering visuals were driving me nuts on the switch.

Only way for a DQ thread to hit bump limit
Especially since mods delete any XI thread with any of the girls in swimsuits after like 300 posts for some reason
But the xi threads with the girls in swimsuits are the only ones that make it to 300 posts

I mean this sincerely, I would probably like DQ a lot less if the translators tried harder to make the english script a one-to-one translation

Well I mean he's not playing the game in Japanese... he's playing it in English. No he doesn't want to play Japanese games, he doesn't know Japanese.
The question is why are YOU playing it in English when what you want to do is play it in Japanese?

say what you will about DQ but the combat never drags. I dont how we got here where theres 1000 different flavors of JRPG where the systems are both overcomplicated but undercooked. I think of shit like Digimon where every fight goes on 2-3 times longer than it has any right to

It's a combination of the formation system and enemies being designed to fit archetypes. It makes every encounter feel fresh because you need to prioritize certain targets and attacks that hit everyone regardless of formation tend to do less damage.
