This. But I couldn't complete all of them, 1 included, sadly.
1 had a save bug on my phone (bought them in 2014 at discount) where the game's app would reset on saving.

Yeah. 7 (3ds) and 5 are the peak of the series tho

the 7 3ds port seems pretty lame so far, I'm at least half way through but I'm already so fricking sick of all the backtracking and gross generic color palette.

Doesn't add anything new in particular but the game is much quicker just from less load times and quicker battles in general

7 ruins the pacing and has a worse job system

You can still carry over everything in the monster jobs if you only care about breaking the game

I hate how slow 7 is. Not only the pacing, but also the animation and everything.
The UI is also extremely laggy.

        Anonymous

yeah the pacing is awful at times, frick whoever wrote the nottagen and alltrade abbey questlines

7 has an absolutely kino art style and graphics

        >art style
the landscapes are all identical the whole game through
        >graphics
some of the textures are really inconsistent across floors and landscapes that makes it look cheap, the camera makes all this more apparent when in motion

Because VII is fine and third arc is dumb in both writting and gameplay. Doesn’t help that XI’s OST is awful, so any grind or new island in VII is already more pleasant.

VII is bloated as frick dude, you go to the same island twice in a row usually doing the same exact task, sometimes fighting a lazy reskin of the last boss. I'm just wrapping up part 3 I think but holy frick this repetition makes it feel like a chore. If I were to drop it right now it'd be a 5/10

I love it. Still a fun game to play on like a lunchbreak.
DQ3's my favorite though, followed by 6.

Phone ports of 4-6 are fantastic, can't really speak for the others. They're a little easier than the DS releases though.

The SNES version is comfy as frick. I couldn't play the NES one, full kana is a pain to read and you have to open the menu constantly to talk to people and shit. The remake reduces the grind and massively improves the visual quality, while not being like any of the hideous later remakes with moronic font choices.

I'm saving DQ3 for the 2.5HD remake. I really need to play V, as I've heard it being of the best, if not the best game in the series

      Anonymous

The majority of the hype for V is just people who played it as their first game when they were 12. It has some good moments, but it's very obviously a SNES game.

The PS2 remake is absolutely the best way to play the game, but it still suffers from SNES limitations. They weren't given the opportunity to add cutscenes or anything, it's essentially just a graphical upgrade. Makes it pretty faithful, but there are a few parts where you think "they couldn't just do a BIT of animation here?".

Don't listen to that moron, seems he can't get into a game story without it being a movie, DQ5 is great either on the SNES or PS2, story, monster recruitment, two girls to marry, etc.

            Anonymous

I just think some of the scenes could've been improved with a bit more emotion. Honestly, maybe my real problem is the lack of voice acting. I've always been of the opinion that it just makes games better, which is why I've always been a Tengai Makyo fan over DQ or FF.

The part where Martha and Papas float off into the sky just looks like shit. It's a little better on the PS2, but it's really bad on the DS.

I don't know, preventing all the terrible shit that happened after the fall of the big tree did feel good. Like the newborn dying in Veronica's village, or one of the kids there losing his entire family, or the village chief in, I think the localization calls it Hotto(?), feeding people to her own son and then getting eaten by him herself, or the unnamed little girl in the village losing her entire family. But it definitely does drag out the story and add a lot of backtracking and environment recycling, I won't disagree with that. But getting your e-girl mage back was worth it

Let me guess, both of these shit opinions are from the same anon.

V is my favorite game in the series.
I'm a sucker for narratives about families though. It's also basically the prototype for the Monsters franchise and I'll take any opportunity to choose my party from Toriyama monster design.
If you've never had a happy home life you probably won't like it and if you never plan on getting married and having kids you definitely won't like it.

OG's definitely one of the strongest titles in my opinion: it's a short and straightforward adventure. Funny enough, I disliked 2 because even though it was much more of an adventure it just wouldn't fricking end. As for a preferred version, I'm partial to the NES. Though the SNES version's a definite upgrade (unlike the mobile port which fricked up the cohesion between tilesets and enemy sprites) but I have a personal dislike of half-tiles. The GBC version's fine too I guess, I do actually like the official english localisation for the series overall. After finishing the DQX free trial I'm fully prepared to offer up my firstborn child for DQX global.

V/VII/VIII are the best. The third arc in XI is a mess, worst decision ever to bloat a story.

The problem with the third act is that it also kills a lot of really nice character development. Sure, you get to save everyone. But it invalidates the second act in a lot of ways, most notably for Senya.

I didn't care about the backtracking, it was fun and they added more than enough new shit to make it appealing to go around another time.

I think you meant the opposite. Honestly, for me, I think I would've been fine with it if Senya got to come back in time too. Everyone else's story was kind of settled, but she had the biggest reason for going back, arguably more than the hero.

              >I think I would've been fine with it if Senya got to come back in time too.
Agreed. It's weird how much time is spent on Serena's character development, even including foreshadowing like Veronica telling her that they'll always be together when they're camping on the world tree, only to then just completely nullify it. Maybe the implication is meant to be that she actually has a strong character deep inside her that will eventually come out? I don't know, but supposedly the 3rd act and second ending was planned from the very beginning on, according to the devs.

                >even including foreshadowing like Veronica telling her that they'll always be together when they're camping on the world tree,
Huh? The point of that scene is that Veronica knows going in that if shit goes south she's going to sacrifice herself. That's why they replay it at the start of act 3 in case you didn't notice the first time. It's just there to add to the tragedy.

2 is a fun game building off of 1 that goes to absolute shit in the end where you have to grind levels off of enemies with instant kill moves for hours to stand a chance at beating the final boss.
I seem to remember the devs saying they didn't actually have time at the end to test to test out the experience of playing the game end to end and it shows.
