Is this worth playing in 2024?
Should I go with the PS2 version or 3DS?
Any decent HD texture packs that on with the PS2 version?
Is the orchestrated soundtrack actually good or just a soulless gimmick?

it's good either way. I have the PS2 version, and the phone version. I think the 3ds version is censored though. Jessica is just too sexy for kids
Either are fine, just don't play the phone version at any cost.
PS2
>orchestral soundtrack
>better graphics
3DS
>extra playable characters that are broken
>extra content
>one continent in the world map is split by loading screens
>rebalanced alchemy pot
>midi soundtrack, but there's a patch for that
3DS is a modern JRPG in terms of quality of life: no random encounters is the biggest change. This greatly affects the pacing of the game and minimizes grinding and lets you do character build faster with metal slime hunting. Two new ending types added for 3DS related to the redhead party member. Dragon Quest 8 had 2 endings, a Normal and Perfect ending. The 3DS version has 2 new endings to the Normal and Perfect ones, letting you start a relationship and later marry Jessica in both those endings.
Most of what he said is correct. The extra content is a mini character arc added for a villain and a massive nostalgia dungeon with old Dragon Quest bosses. 3DS version is feature packed if you can get over the graphic hit and lack of orchestrated OST.
>a massive nostalgia dungeon with old Dragon Quest bosses
Not old Dragon Quest bosses, just roided up Dragon Quest 8 bosses, except for the very end where Estark from 4 shows up. Because Estark always shows up now.
And then DQ IX came and featured every final boss in the series until then.
Except VIII 3DS came after IX.
Actually, the phone version is a decent contender now because there's a mod that unfricks it (But also makes some probably unnecessary balance changes, though I can't comment on those). It adds the option to pick between JP or EN voices, and even whether Jessica uses her PS2 or 3DS voice.
nice but man playing in vertical sucks, there's really no option for horizontal?
You forgot you can marry Jessica in the 3DS version!
3DS has enemies on the map which makes it the defacto best version to me.
Frick the 3DS version. There’s a lot of QoL improvements are admittedly good and there are cool added features, but the soundtrack is waaaaaaay shittier. If you don’t care about that then yeah go 3DS.
A lot of people love it, but I found it to be one of the weaker DQs.
Citra and PCSX2 are both ass, so go with the version you have easy access to. If you can play on PS2 hardware, go with that over the tiny 3DS handheld.
PCSX2 is less bad than Citra these days.
>actually good or just a soulless gimmick?
The new content in the 3DS version is actively bad, imo.
OP here, I'm like 3h into the PS2 version (just got to Alexandria) and I guess I'll just stick with this version then. I'd love an undub, but the english voices aren't that hard actually, and I can live without the QoL stuff. Only thing I'm probably gonna do is try and apply an HD texture pack. The menus are a bit too washed out for my liking.
>I'd love an undub
The Japanese version didn't have voice acting, dumb frogposter.
So what, a japanese dub exists, and the acting still carries emotional weight. English voice acting is usually shit (though it doesn't appear to be bad in this game)
That's not an undub, stupid.
That's adding in a new dub.
for the english voice acting they got british soap opera actors instead of the usual american dub crowd
Weebs are truly pathetic.
Undub is turning off the voices entirely. Also play 3DS.
The modded 3ds version, with uncensored outfits and the original soundtrack, is pretty good.
The new content isn't very good, but being able to choose your overworld encounters makes the endgame grind much faster and easier.
Did they ever mod jiggle physics back in?
It's just like switching from XI to XI:S or V (PS2) to V (DS). If you only care about graphics in a game then get the PS2 version. If you care about actual story, gameplay and more content then get the 3DS (which is better overall).
in no world is orchestration a soulless gimmick
Patch the 3DS version. You get 2 extra overpowered characters and marriage scenes. You can undub it if you want.
Just a reminder that this game will be 20 years old next november.
why the frick wont SE make a pixel remaster collection and also bring the rest to modern platforms?
only dragonquest Ive played and it was pretty good back in the day
It's the first one level 5 made. Personally i hate the level 5 ones because of their insipid quests, childish writing and awful localizations and every single character across every single game looks identical.
People generally over-rate the game to a massive degree because it's the first one they played (it was the first game in the series to receive a massive marketing budget in the USA)
>play dragon quest
>complains about childish writing
FF thread is next door
I don't know the difference between the two versions but I replayed the PS2 version a few years ago and it was just as good as long as you can tolerate the usual jrpg stuff (enemies appearing every five steps you take). The game is freaking great and it looks beautiful.
I was enjoying this game on 3DS until I realized I built the characters all wrong and you can’t undo it. It’s been years since I dropped it but maybe I’ll try the patched version for something different.
3DS version with the patch that restores the music and uncensors the game.
Where can I get the patched/uncensored 3ds ver.?
Jessica is the better love interest considering the princess is nonexistant 99% of the game, so the 3DS one
>morons really didnt go back to the spring after ever story event and get her new dialogue and then seriously say jessica is the better love interest
Yes, I'm going to marry Jessica.
just because she's hotter doesn't mean shes a good love interest
Her being a good love interest makes her a good love interest. You journey with Jessica the entire game
The English voice acting came first and is therefore canon.
Yangus' English voice is the greatest performance ever captured on audio.
dq7 ps1 or 3ds?
3ds
I simply like 3DS better
For the love of God, 3DS.
DQ7 had a troubled development on PS1 and it really shows.
>DQ7 had a troubled development on PS1 and it really shows.
LMAO, XD even.
If there's a DQ that didn't have a troubled development it must been DQ7, game got delayed a crap ton of times because the developers wanted to add everything they could and they did.
In other words DQ7 is the way it is because the developers wanted to be that way.
As for wich version is better, I have a soft spot for the PS version but I can see why people dislike the game, the 3DS has a bunch of QOL stuff wich pretty much makes it a bran new game, also I think that the class system is superior in the remake.
>In other words DQ7 is the way it is because the developers wanted to be that way.
I mean the game makes you go back and forth between two locations a bunch of times and then jokes about making you do it
they were pretty aware about the bloat
It's both, really.
DQ7 was originally intended for N64 but shifted to Playstation mid development. Heartbeat, while they excelled at 2D development on the SFC for DQ6 and 3 remake, were inexperienced with 3D development which led to a few delays due to bugs and Horii not being pleased with progress (was originally supposed to release in 1997) .
Horii also wanted to make use of all the additional space they had so he wanted to make the biggest DQ game yet, which hampered development more.
Development on DQ7 was so bad that for DQ8 Horii dropped Heartbeat like a rock and, after searching around for developers competent with 3D dev, landed on Level 5. Heartbeat was so demoralized that they closed office after they got the DQ4 remake out the door.
3ds is better but ps1 is more soulful and I like it more
Why would [Current Year] make anything worth more or less to play?
Downloading this texture pack right now. Never messed with texture packs before, just smaller patches like retranslations.
Hope my Deck can handle this.
?si=FXCjGPklYTuBOJZJ
Texture pack looks awesome, but sadly the text is still low res and blurry.
Anybody know of a way to make it look better, or is that just a PS2 limitation?
dawn, that music at 0:55 hits hard.
This game is pure soul.
If you're willing to mod the only real call is whether you like the new gameplay additions enough to take a pretty big graphical hit.
If you choose 3DS you'll need to mod in the uncensored designs and orchestral OST.
If you choose PS2 you don't need a mod but you miss out on a lot. I personally can't deal with random encounters anymore, too annoying. I'd suffer the graphical hit.
>Is this worth playing in 2024?
yes
>Should I go with the PS2 version or 3DS?
PS2
>Any decent HD texture packs that on with the PS2 version?
dunno
>Is the orchestrated soundtrack actually good or just a soulless gimmick?
it's beautiful
3DS version fixes Angelo moronic skill point growth. It was seriously bad during his first level ups. What were they thinking?
PS2 version, game still holds up very well today and is 10/10 comfyludokino. No idea if there are any texture packs or whatever but it doesn't need anything beyond upscaling on PCSX2.
It's been a fair few years since I last emulated it but at the time there was a weird bug later in the game when you need to follow a shadow but the it wouldn't render when upscaled. Might have been fixed by now though, this was at least 6 years ago and may have just been an issue with certain gpus.
3ds version is really fricking ugly. You can fix the censorship and music though. Instant alchemy pot from the beginning is nice. I have to say that putting enemies on the over world just completely ruins the difficulty though. You can just run past everything and never worry about managing resources. There's no longer that foreboding sense of danger being balls deep in a new dungeon and running out of items and thinking, "oh shit."
Play the ps2 then 3ds version
I don't know but I want to have sex with Yangus
If you've never played the original PS2 version, you won't notice any difference in the soundtrack.
I played DQ8 3ED version with Japanese voices and a orchestrated music. It's great.
The 3DS version is definitive version. It doesn't look that bad on console, but you can make it look better on an emulator.
The original PS2 version isn't a bad choice either, but you'll miss the new content and QoL...
Jessica milk is much better than horse milk
>this fricking thread again
PS2.
PS2.
PS2.
3DS version destroys the challenge of the game by allowing players to avoid combats and make expeditions in the wilderness a cakewalk. It's also ugly as shit and the music sucks.
>by allowing players to avoid combats
there is literally an option to flee from combat in the original game
are you dumb
Oh yeah because the option to flee that doesn't always work is the same as being able to hug walls and walk an entire dungeon without doing a fight. Yeah it's the same of course.
No it's not you wiener muncher? It removes all the tension, when you're low HP with no heal no phoenix feathers or ygdrasil leaves or whatever the items were called ( didn't play for decades don't remember let go of my leg ) you were clenching your ass like a kid in a summer camp ran by Catholics. There's none of that on 3ds. For me it kills the game, all the fun I had was by completing dungeons underleveled by the skin of my teeth praying not to get fights too awful. Then I played the 3ds version and it was casual kiddie shit.
Always PS2. The game is meant to be played with random encounters.
>there’s people in this thread that are unironically defending random encounters
Random encounters are fine.
Map encounters are also fine.
Static encounters are fine too.
