If you like Dragon Quest games their great. Kind of the best part about the series is unlike Final Fantasy it's pretty much been the same formula but refined each iteration.

It's a great game, good pacing, good length and the characters are all enjoyable.

If you hate JRPGs and Dragon Quest, it's obvious the answer is no.

Thanks brehs. Never played DQ before but I do like JRPGs.

Not trying to ruin your fun but don't
They downgrated the original graphics to Nintendo Switch hardware

play the original (which you can torrent)

If u still dont care after watching the full video. Then go ahead

Did the original get the orchestral music & extra shit the switch version added?

            no.
you can mod it in on pc tho

                >the original was on pc.
                Yes, it was.
However, the S version has more content, including 2D mode and scenes in the past.

the S version is a port of the switch release though.
i still don't understand why they didn't just make the S edition content available as DLC.

                >why they didn't just make the S edition content available as DLC.
Because then they wouldn't be able to just click on recompile and port it as it is.

Different versions of UE4 and Square didn't want to bother doing the work to backport, so they just released the Switch version on other platforms.
That said, there's a dedicated project by fans to port as many graphical assets as possible from the PC version of the original to the PC version of S called Project Rebuild.

Some indoor graphics are better in the S version, like reflections on floors.

The draconian settings pissed me off, hard mode enemies can softlock you in combat with infinite healing and the other challenges are only an annoyance in the beginning
Dq6 didn't need soft lock shit to be challenging

average four homies in a row game it is, but the challenge options actually let the game have a semblence of difficulty.

No. The quest is really mediocre and never ending, the writing is bad, the localization and music are atrocious.
It does have really nice graphics though.

Dragon Quest hasn't been good since Level 5 took over.

It was my first DQ game and I liked it.
A cool aspect about this game is how many little short stories are interwoven with the main narrative. Huh, funny, moment to moment stuff was fine, but in my mind I'm kinda embellishing what the game was.
Anyways, yes it's fun. The music, however, is pretty bad. I think the composer was over 90 and barely did any new tracks, it annoyed me that every town shared the same track. And some of the story stuff I felt was a bit too focused on "true mega happy ending" thing.
But the positives outweight the negatives.

Should I spend $14 on the regular edition of 11 with a further save file, or $25 for the S edition that burned me out before getting to where I was in the original playthrough?

I know you already got a Yes and this thread is on page 8, but I just defeated the king's ghost last night and the resulting scenes were great.

No, everything besides graphics is mediocre. It's anniversary game in the vein of dq-3, which was released in 88'. If you're a fan, or happen to randomly like it, it'll be okay, snooze-fest otherwise.

dq11 is basically the only good dub because its a game about travelling around knockoffs of real world cultures and they put in the work to make it so everyone sounds like their part of the world and also I didn't recognize any of the voice actors. this makes it superior to every other dub where everyone is from texas or england and makes it better then the jp of this game because instead of the same jp actors voicing the entire planet you get actual variety in a game about variety.

even the atrocious shit dragon quest english versions have been doing with the oi m8 accents again actually works in this game because the accents are always regional instead of everyone in the world having a british accent.

I played this game with the harder monsters setting turned on and it was the best jrpg I've played in a long time. I had to actually use status moves and strategy to beat boss fights because I also turned on the setting that prevents you from overleveling for the part of the game you're in and didn't fight every random battle.
but because you can actually put bosses to sleep, the game rewarded exploration by finding gear, you can respec your characters pretty easily to adjust your strategy for a boss and you can swap party members mid fight I managed to pull through instead of just getting stonewalled because my numbers sucked while also having to think even during random battles so I don't either get smoked or use way too much MP.
It's got a pretty great story and atmosphere once it gets going too, it starts off pretty slow but as you can see this is a really fricking long game.

10/10 highly recomend. shame the bonus dq8 clothes look kind of stupid on the main character because they looked great on the guy in that game.

      >the setting that prevents you from overleveling for the part of the game you're in
Completely useless. No, really. Any enemy that doesn't die when you dash into it will yield EXP. You can fight Spitzfire over and over and end up overleveled anyway.
      >difficulty
The one thing I find absolute bullshit was instant death spells
      >fighting golden globe in the desert
      >insta-death dance on turn 1
      >only hero dies
      >game over
      absolute bullshit.

        Anonymous

nah it definitely works. it lowers exp gradually and when I was trying to power level to do post game fights I had to literally stop metal slime grinding because the game considered them too weak and wouldn't give me exp for it so I had to instead farm the king metal slimes in the dq9 area. if there's a few places where it breaks down then oh well.

        >The one thing I find absolute bullshit was instant death spells
the game wasn't designed around game over if hero dies so thats on you although you could've probably equippied stuff to resist it

If you're playing a mainline dragon quest game you're going to want to always choose "No" during the story cutscene choices.

harder monsters is a must have. shypox just kind of randomly kills you or makes random battles take slightly longer so its pretty lame and the one where the npcs lie sounds cool but its more like it makes some npcs say random stupid shit thats obviously untrue or a joke and then go psyke JK so its pretty lame as well & the rest of the stuff makes the game harder but in a way where its more for a second playthrough

I know I couldn't because my autism forces me to steal from enemies until I get their rare drops (a nightmare early on without dex)

Stronger Monster is mandatory, less XP is ok as well. I wouldn't do 'Lose if Hero Dies'
As another said, click No when options come up at least once. It's cute.

      Anonymous

Stronger Monster is the only setting you need to check. Less xp for fighting weak monsters is meaningless since the "level cap" is pretty high. Shypox/Super Shypox is an annoyance factor. No shopping would be fine if the game still let you purchase materials when forging. Without it, item farming becomes a thing and it's slow and boring.
Fun note, playing the game with all settings on except Stronger Monsters is still easier than playing the game with just Stronger Monsters.

Dragon Quest XI is the last high quality, high budget JRPG with turn based combat.
I mean it, Final Fantasy has gone pure actionslop, it took almost a fricking decade for SMT5 and it barely runs on the Switch, Persona 6 isn't coming out until the next decade, and everyone else gave up.
If you haven't played it and if you do, savor it. Take it slow. It will be the last JRPG you ever play and finish.

  24. 5 months ago
    Anonymous

    Play it on Hard.
You can only lower the difficulty mid-playthrough, but can't raise it. Normal is very easy and gets boring ~30 hours in.
I had to replay the first 30h all over again because I wanted it to be somewhat challenging.

Other than that it's a great game. Aside from the soundtrack. The soundtrack's the most repetitive and annoying shit I ever heard. I'm glad the composer died.

I beat it last month and enjoyed it.
Act 3 is ass though since youre retracking the area like a third fricking time with the last set of dungeons just being a gay ass retracking once again. The story also felt rush in that part since it read like the writer wanted it to end.

      act 3 was based
      >hey the entire world is fricked up with new boss fights that all have some cool gimmick, take them down in whatever order you want while doing sidequests to power up even more to fight those guys and also the final boss
      hell yea. peak adventure kino
