Grinding can be a skill, depending on the game, and you can grind shit out faster than others and reach milestones before them, which is what happened at the start of New World where I was going around oneshotting casuals. With time gates and faily quests there's no such opportunity, so there's even less opportunity for any kind of merit or effort to shine through.

I stopped playing wow at shadowlands because of the changes blizzard was making to the game to social signal after they were caught sexually harassing and possibly raping their female employees. It has nothing to do with the quality of the expansion. Not only do I find what blizzard did to be reprehensible, but I refuse to play the pozzed version of wow they twisted and corrupted after a lot of the abusers were ousted. Dragonflight is unironically a good expansion they got rid of a lot of bullshit mechanics that were just grinding excuses, the problem with current wow is with an ongoing shitty direction that has been going since years, not DF in particular

The issue is, the game changed genre over the years. It went from "MMO focused on adventure and exploration, zero content once you reach max level so you might as well quit at that point" to "arcade co-op dungeons, the goal is to get the highest score in said dungeons, nothing you do before max level matters."
These two genres cannot coexist.
They could everything you proposed and it would not change a thing. If anything it would make the game worse, it would only exacerbate its identity crisis.
What they need to do is split the game. It's never going to happen, but that's the only solution I see:
1 - A GW2 clone. Horizontal progression (once you reach max level and max gear, you're done forever), the map is a giant themepark with activities, short speedrun-focused dungeons.
2 - An Everquest clone. The open-world is hard, classes are unique, leveling is slow, you have to group up with other players in order to progress, once you reach max level you're basically done.
Or what everyone wants
3 - You progress through each raid/update tier and there is no content island catchup mechanic that lets you skip whole raid tiers
How would this fix anything. Leveling still wouldn't matter, the world still wouldn't matter. You need to find a guild that carries you through a raid that gets destroyed because everyone's is gigageared, so you can get your items and do the content that's actually fun.
You also have to take M+ into account, how would that interact with raids? No one is going back to older raids if they can just M+ their way into better gear.
What about new expansions. Are expansions complete resets? Or do you have to go through every single raid in the game in order to reach current content? This would become unsustainable pretty fast.
That's moronic. You're the reason the game, and the entire genre really, is fricking dying. Clinging to archaic design elements that serve as nothing more than barriers of entry for players.

What killed the game was a series of shit expansions eroding any confidence the devs had and leaving a rudderless ship to be steered by the loudest windblowers.
When you start an expansion at half the playerbase size it only gets worse especially with how they gutted the amount of time it takes to get proper gear. S3 and """S4""" of SL felt like shit when it came to finding groups for anything, and we're already feeling that in S2 of DF and it already felt bad in S1. This is technically the better expansion to come out, but the start was so uninteresting it gained zero traction. Along with the fact that we came back after 2 mostly shit expansions it's no surprise there's no playerbase to hold the game up. The story sucks and barely any of the loose ends of SL or even BFA have really been tied up, the stuff with Wrathion and Sabellian is slightly more interesting, but we're going to probably dick around with the void again only to forget about them, and then they'll disappear again when a new big bad shows up with barely any lore or build up to them.

Me and 3 other friends started wow back in vanilla and quite nearly at the same time post Wotlk. It was kino and fun since we did most if not all content together. Now the most mazed of us thought it'd be great to become a streamer after not playing the game all these years. He started with DF and me with another one of the old team "stealth watch" his streams just to make him feel a bit better till he realises that he'll probably can't become a successful streamer.

I don't understand why they expect people to stay.
The majority of development time gets slammed into an activity that only a tiny minority of players ever did - raiding. The only reason the numbers for raiding are up is because everybody who doesn't raid was filtered out by the game after like 5 raid or leave expansions and the fact that they keep diluting the raiding experience by removing difficulty in form of LFR or scaling down the player requirements to increase the numbers of people participating. Hell, even mythic+ is basically raiding lite in that you need an actual group of dedicated players to follow autistic dance instructions to correctly hit NPCs. That's not even mentioning that literally all content is at the mercy of raids, they'd sooner cut 80% of 'side content' than touch a raid and they spent last decade sacrificing the story, the world and characters just so they can add some flavor to the generic raids they make.
Maybe you could actually play the game instead of crying about there being content for those who do?

There is literally 0 chance of Blizzard ever doing the right thing and pulling their heads out of their asses. Every time they make content that would appeal to non-raiders they either implement it so poorly that nobody does it, or they abandon it after a couple of patches with zero real updates, or a combination of both.
Both archaeology and pet battles were great ideas, one of them was implemented poorly and the other was neglected which lead to people not doing it, which Blizzard obviously interpreted as 'people are actually only interested in raiding', like the total morons they are, with chief raidbaby moron Hazzikostas leading the charge.
I tried WoW during Shadowlands and I was fricking taken aback about how little actual fricking content there was in an MMO over a decade old. Everything in the game either has an arbitrary timegate or was completely useless to do unless it was for a mount/pet/transmog/whatever.

Not to mention the fact that teleports in this game are fricking incredibly scarce compared to the only other MMO I've ever played, Runescape, so I ended up spending half the game alt tabbing as I flew in a straight line for up to like 5 minutes at a time.
The only thing I had any fun doing was PVP, and honestly if PVP and current content raiding is the only thing that's actually fun in the game I'm just better of playing something else.

Not that anon, but because it doesn't largely. It comes out of the woodwork on occasion. I enjoyed it more than I did WoW at any rate. The only issue I have with it is the PVP is very, very sterile. I liked PVP in WoW, but it's most assuredly just a bell and whistle on a game loaded with bells and whistles. I'd had preferred it to be a little more tight and dev'd with more care. Can't complain though, as it's a nice distraction with friends.

The gameplay in Dragonflight is the best its ever been. Classes feel great, talent trees are better than classic's talent trees and gearing is fun.
The only problem with the expac is that the theme and stories suck. The game is too kiddy now, nothing ever happens, the aspects just look sad and mopey all the time, every questline is some kind of "lets hug the animals!!!" baby shit

I returned to WoW for every expansion and played at least 3 months depending on how much I enjoyed it.
Dragonflight is horrendous, the talent trees are exactly as pointless as I knew they'd be since there will always be an optimized build and straying from which will make the game experience worse for you. Also, ripping out core abilities and putting them in a talent tree.
"Playing" Dragonflight was logging in less than an hour every day and flying between low effort world quests with boring rewards. Once a week this process was lengthened to about 3 hours with weekly resets of helping Wrathion or his gay lover beat off a bunch of fire giants etc. Generally there was no theming to world quests, I had no fricking clue why I was floating down a river on a raft and taking pictures of jerking off monkeys.
Next is the dungeon and raid experience, m+ is worse than even in Shadowlands, which I already despised with all my being. Everyone behaved like a chink gacha grinder, not speaking a word and rushing ahead as hard as they could and leaving as soon as someone missing an interrupt. Loot is thoroughly uninteresting because there's no itemization, there are no specific bosses to grind for specific items, everything is chosen and rolled for you and ALL items are just stat sticks that come pre-optimized for your class and spec. The dungeons themselves weren't particularly fun either, lacking alternate pathways and forcing you to fight most packs anyway, aside from the centaur land dungeon. The raid was horrible and boring, I didn't care for the bosses we were fighting, same shit as M+ everybody was just rushing to get to the end asap and extremely easily offended by someone doing one minor mistake or DARING to ask about boss mechanics.
