So I've got a major dragon itch lately, particularly for dragon companions. Anyone got any solid game recommendations that feature dragons heavily? What are your favorite vidya dragons overall?
>inb4 Pokemon is mentioned
>inb4 Palworld is mentioned
Picrel is from my favorite H game called Brave Soul. Very solid RPG overall and has an absolutely adorable dragon friend that is much more than a dragon that travels with you the whole game. Bonus, for an H game there's even a non-H ending route, though it's called Loser's Paradise lol.
Ooh so close to quads in an OP!
>brave soul
>male protag female dragon companion
Well shit OP, you went straight after my heart have you?
A shame that there's a near 100% chance she becomes a human or elf or some such, but alas, it is what it is.
Seconding OP's request.
That's absolutely my shit.
Honestly I want to recommend Brave Soul to so many people but I'm always afraid to because it's an H game. It's such an amazing game even if you remove all the H elements! Most H games are pretty straight-forward fap bait but Brave Soul is an actually fun game to play with an amazing storyline and very engaging characters!
>near 100% chance
Do you want me to spoil it for you or nah?
Nah.
It's fine. I'll play it and see it for myself, but I will not be surprised if the pattern holds and she "evolves" into a humanoid, or her true form was originally an elf, or something of the sort.
That's usually the case with media featuring female dragons alongside humanoids after all.
Regardless, more dragon companion in games, please.
I really, really would love if somebody looked at what scalebound was trying to do and ran with it.
>scalebound
Fricking this. Holy hell I was hyped for that game. So fricking pissed that it got canceled.
>Bahamut Lagoon
Never heard of that one, but tactical RPG seems up my alley. SNES too, I might already have that in my collection somewhere...one moment...yes it is in my collection! I'll have to give it a shot sometime. Someone gave me a copy of every NES/SNES game released in the US in ROM format years ago and I'm still finding games in there I've never heard of lol.
Bahamut Lagoon also reminds me of one tactical RPG that's more monster oriented but definitely has a bunch of dragons (and the "starter" general has one of the most powerful ones in his army to begin with). Brigandine: Legend of Forsena. I can't tell you how many times I've replayed that game, though it's definitely more on the tactical end than it is on the RPG end. Probably my favorite tactical game for that matter.
>Most H games are pretty straight-forward fap bait
There's a lot of H games that are genuinely good games. Monster Girl Quest Paradox comes to mind. The writing is great, there's a frick ton of attention to detail in terms of character dialogue and interaction, and the RPG system is pretty fun and allows for some creative builds
Oh yes, I don't doubt that there are good games out there that just also happen to be H games. It's just that the vast majority of the market is just a means to an end so to speak. Makes it hard to find the well-written ones out there you know?
I can't tell if this is a dragon fricker thread or not. If it isn't play Monster Hunter
Eh ymmv. I've played the hell out of Monster Hunter World (at least pre-DLC, though kinda got burnt out a bit into the DLC). While it was very much a fun romp I found the story a bit lacking. Not to mention the entire time you spend killing dragons, would be more interested in befriending them. Oh and most of those "dragons" aren't very "dragonlike" to be fair. I think the newer Monster Hunter could have you riding the "dragons"? Still, not sure I want to invest in another game in the franchise when based on what I saw it was a bit shallow in story and character engagement. Great for an action game though don't get me wrong, just those can only keep me interested for so long.
Have you played the first Drakengard anon?
I highly recommend it, the way the dragon is treated and the relationship between the main human character and the dragon is great in the way it evolves.
I have not, looks like there's a couple in the series. Squeenix too, that's rather promising, always been a fan of their games. I think I did hear of it at some point but never got around to checking it out.
Don't read anything about it until you have done your first ending.
For the first game or which? Looks like there's 3 in the main series and Nier is a spinoff too. Thankfully I never got into Nier yet either, something about it just felt a bit off and I never really tried to dig deeper.
For the first, mostly.
The second one is kind of lukewarm, and the third one's plot is not as interesting to me aside from how it expands the universe.
Nier is great too, no dragons there but I still highly recommend if you play Drakengard and want more of yoko taro's weirdness.
If it's story you want MH is not your game. I'd recommend FFXIV for the Heavensward expansion since it's heavily focused on dragons but it's an MMO and you have to finish the base game first, still it's free so maybe you end up liking it
Gonna be a hard pass from me on most if not all MMOs. I could never really enjoy them. And I'm even less likely to play one with a subscription.
How about Monster Hunter Stories then? You befriend the monsters and fight with them. Though it's a turn-based RPG, unlike the original game.
Huh, there is a LOT of DLC for the second one, not entirely surprised though is a popular franchise. And the first is also on android it seems. Might check it out sometime, looks interesting.
The 2nd game's gameplay is better with some QoL changes. The first and second games' story are mostly standalone, so you can just jump straight to the second one. I can remember some cameos of characters from the first game in the second game, but nothing important.
the DLC for MHS2 is all pure cosmetic so you can skip them, they arent even good since the game is about crafting your own armor from the blood and bones of your foes
Yeah I suspected as much, seems to be the trend with Monster Hunter DLC content aside from major expansions like Iceborne.
there is a mod for world that lets you capture monsters as companions
Bahamut Lagoon.
Childhood friend princesses may cuck you, but your dragon will always remain loyal to you.
Was just about to post this
I can't think of a game that does dragon training better.
That's a super nintendo game right?
Might emulate it on my Android TV.
Don't worry, here's your superior romance option. Old man is here to save the day.
You get to be the dragon and shove your dragonly dick inside your chosen wife.
The gameplay is super jank since it tries to both a strategy game, an RTS and a dragon action game. It doesn't really work yet it's so unique that it weirdly sucks you in imo. Humor is surprisingly good for a Larion game too.
Jetpack dragon is cool as hell.
I'm still mad the Imp princess wasn't implemented. At least you get to have Frankenstein monster wife if you go with the skeleton.
larianshit
Monster Rancher has cool dragons but you gotta unlock them.
Panzer Dragoon series
Dragon Blaze
Drakensang
Divinity II
>Panzer Dragoon
Saga is apparently widely acclaimed so I'll check that out, not a fan of rail shooters though most of the time.
>Dragon Blaze
Likewise.
>Drakensang
Looks like a CRPG, sounds vaguely familiar but I have not played it before.
>Divinity II
Oof, but muh autism will require me to beat the first one first.
Okay you've convinced me. Where can I buy/download this game? I can't find it on Steam.
theres this thing called google
its a search engine
you can use it to like, search for stuff
wild i know
What now?
add more words
No offense but your google-fu seems a bit lacking there. If at first you don't succeed try again with other keywords. As I said here
if you add the word game to the search you get a bunch of relevant results. Amazon being the first, and jast being the third.
I've had it for so long I don't even remember where I originally got it. Amazon has a few ways to buy it though. And a site called jastusa has it (3rd result when googling "brave soul game")
Side note one of these days I'm going to get serious about ripping all of Shell's voice files from Brave Soul, by far my favorite adorable dragon noises, and I'd love to plug them into soundboards and other shenanigans sometime. I tried it briefly but none of the audio files are easy to rip from the game files and the specific file types appeared to be proprietary so it's gonna be rough.
>ripping all of Shell's voice files from Brave Soul
Welp I just tried every single generic video game unpacker on this fricker and nothing works. I'm not unconvinced that Yuu's ExtractData would do it but I can't get pass this stupid error. Seems like you'd need to properly reverse engineer it if you want access.
Early 2000's software can suck a dick.
Yeah I tried a few myself and did some research, a lot of stuff back then used proprietary packed file types unfortunately so each one you basically gotta contact the devs directly or some shit.
Eh, if you like older games it's still fine lol.
Did it, finally
Enjoy https://mega.nz/file/zFATiQ4B#9o3s95n9FZ7TXBHd-d6DiAv5Ajt-_wiZ7qMwK_w1jpg
There's a pretty sizable subreddit dedicated to reverse engineering games, might make a thread on there sometime.
If you go a certain path in Wrath of the righteous you can get a dragon companion, you also can become one in another path
Also you're playing a dragon in Breath of fire I think
Aivu is such a lovable little shit.
A shame that they didn't do more with Terendelev.
Truly a waste of a character.
>Aivu is such a lovable little shit.
She was a beast pre nerf too, dispelled everything even the final boss and her fear aura worked way too well
Ah yes, Breath of Fire, those are some great games (though Dragon Quarter is a bit funky...)
>(though Dragon Quarter is a bit funky...)
and garbage
To be fair it wasn't absolute trash. I enjoyed it for a little while anyways. Definitely wasn't worth the Breath of Fire name nor the original price tag however. I also think that's what killed the franchise sadly.
Oh, bonus points for those interested in Brave Soul. It has an auto-attack button and a turbo function that is easily toggled mid-game with a button press. Makes most combat/grinding very painless as long as you watch your HP/MP levels.
There's also a somewhat secret infinite slime spawner if you're the type to set up auto-grinding in RPGs.
Oh, and while we're at it, it's been a while since I've bothered looking into current emulators and I don't remember which ones I used on my old dead phone (past few phones haven't had the internal space or an external SD slot). epsxe is still my favorite for PS1 and Dolphin's good for Gamecube/Wii afaik but anyone know what's good for PS2/PS3 (mostly for Drakengard)? Likewise any XBOX+360 emus would be cool too, still have a few games that were never ported to PC that I'd like to replay but I'd rather not deal with the consoles anymore. Hell I haven't even plugged in any of my consoles in years.
pcsx2 is the only emulator I've ever used for PS2 games, although support can still be spotty in places it works well enough
Alrighty I'll keep that one in mind. Looks like my old favorite emu resource has that one as the top rated one too.
Something I'd absolutely attempt to develop if I had the skills and resources would be a game like Stray but playing a small dragon. I'd also want to add some combat and metroidvania elements to it though too. Like at the start you could be too young to fly and use a breath weapon but you could unlock those as you progress.
Even as an indie project if I could reliably focus on it for an extended period of time I could probably eventually make it as a 2D sidescroller, I have enough of an understanding of programming that I'd be able to teach myself the rest of the skills needed though I'd probably need help artistically. The problem is I wouldn't be satisfied with a 2D game, I'd want to go all out and make it 3D like Stray.
Hrm... could make for a fun little pipe dream though... make the 2D version and get it popular enough that I can get in good with BlueTwelve Studio and work with their team on a 3D one later as a sequel or something. It would get me out of this dead-end lifestyle that's for sure.
Had a thought thanks to a friend recommending I play Spyro to scratch my dragon itch... I really should have thought of it before though and I'm a moron for not thinking it already.
A new-gen Spyro game in the vein of Stray with stronger metroidvania elements.
Though my original thought was something a bit more realistic than Spyro to be fair. Still, wouldn't be much of a stretch to make the connection.
Dragons are a dead genre, now teens are after capeshit.
I guess there's Ego Draconis if you're not afraid of the clunk
Not really afraid of clunk though as I said before I'd want to play the first Divinity before getting into that one. Unless someone can assure me that the two are disconnected story wise like
has with Monster Hunter Stories.
You play as some random dude and it ends on a cliffhanger of sorts IIRC.
Just play it, from memory it doesn't have much to do with the established lore aside from the antagonist.
I always loved playing Tactics Ogre because you could recruit dragons and they're pretty beefy, although only females can be dragon tamers for some reason. So maybe Tactics Ogre Reborn
Damn never thought I would find another brave soul player here and I have posted it several times.
I have yet to get all endings, only got main, catgirl and the magician girl endings.
Very neat old vanilla hgame when I played back then with an awesome soundtrack. Gameplay probably doesn't hold up nowadays.
Final fantasy 11, dragoons get a dragon pet
I’m making an action-adventure game where you play as a dragon. Does that count?
It's a definite step in the right direction! Though I hope that's an early shot of what it looks like and the graphics will improve further in development lol. First thought was "rounder roblox" not gonna lie.
Due to my absolute lack of 3D modeling skills, and my desire to finally release a game after saying so since I was in elementary school but never doing so, I’m going full moron with my Ecstatica-like style.
Perhaps one day I’ll figure out how to make more competent models.
That's the way to go really, if you keep waiting for perfection you'd never get anything out.
I wish you luck anon.
Thanks, dude. I have a playable prototype already on the internet so if you want to check it out let me know.
In the meantime here’s this drawing of the protagonist an anonymous artist made a while ago on the Ganker drawthreads.
What would you guys rather.
A game where you play a person with a dragon companion, a la OP's game;
A game where you play a dragon, a la ;
I'm solidly on the first one. Braveheart did a number on me during my childhood.
Also, Eragon.
OP here, obviously you know where I'm at lol, definitely the first category. Braveheart and Eragon both resonate strongly with me as well. Hell I was sad as frick when Hagrid had to give up Norbert in Harry Potter!
Also, as much as it sucked compared to the books... I still admit that as a standalone the Eragon movie wasn't half bad, and it definitely had a lot of good visuals.
i love playing as the dragon. i dont mind being the trainer and having the dragon as my monster but im kinda bored of that if it doesnt give me a romance option.
Eh, guess this thread's gonna die off soonish. Firing up Bahamut Lagoon to check it out now.
Same.
Downloaded the rom and put it on my 1tb pendrive to use it on my TV.
I have no expectations, only curiosity.
I mean it's squaresoft so it's probably going to be decent at the very least.
First impressions kinda makes me think of a fusion between the old Shining Force games and like FF4-6 era Final Fantasy.
she killed millions
Hmm... looks like my copy isn't fully translated. Maybe I can find a better one out there somewhere.
Yeah looks like my copy was DeJap's translation (unsurprising since Nears only came out in 2020 and I first got this collection back in 2006 or 2007 lol)
Yeah it never officially came out in the west, I think this is the translation you want
https://www.romhacking.net/translations/280/
A quick google search led me to a different site that has both translations on it.
https://fantasyanime.com/squaresoft/bahamut_downs.htm
Also found the original Japanese version lol.
Speaking of Japanese ROMs... One of these days I gotta see if anyone actually translated the Slayers SNES game.
Actually that one is the DeJap translation that I already had. Though a quick search on that site did find a translation of the Slayers game so thanks for the link regardless!
Holy fricking shit anon you are amazing! It'll take me a while to sort through this but from the looks of things it's every individual voice clip period godsdamn! Thankyou!
My TTRPG friends will likely both love and hate you as I fully intend to put Shell's voice clips into my Discord soundboard and spam them during games now, especially the one where I'm specifically playing a character getting an ever-growing platoon of buffed up dragon familiars!
After some quick testing it looks like the ones I want all have "s" in the filename so that makes things a hell of a lot easier!
Specifically, I THINK, they're only going to be starting with "h" and ending with "s".
So for that matter if anyone else wants to use some adorable dragon sounds for their own purposes that's the easiest way to find them amidst that gigantic list of files lol.
Anyone played those Drakan games on PS2?
I have not yet, though I'm going to look into getting them sometime probably.
Are there any games where I can live with dragons in a cave like a family? Fly on top of them and fight?
When it comes to dragon related media where the dragon(s) are not all enemies and are intended to be around or are the main character, a vast majority of them either:
>make the dragon adopt human form for most of their screen presence to the point where them being a dragon is irrelevant to their character and the plot
>make the dragon a sidekick/distant secondary or tertiary character to the human who is most often their rider/master
>if they are an actually character, they are usually a big jobber
>or in combination with two, make them a straight up non-speaking, pet-like animal
Yeah that's the gist of it. There needs to be more where the dragon (speaking or non) is a more prevalent character even if they're a sidekick still.
This, seriously dragon riding may as well be a red flag for dragon games at this point because it always means the dragon isn't actually an important character compared to the human.
its fricked up how Angelus from Drakengard is the only dragon character who actually fits all the good criteria
I'm making a game where you play as a cute dragon girl in a thong leotard piloting a super robot dragon knight (designed by a jp artist I hooked up with) mecha and fight other fantasy themed mechs
Does that count
(Yes I'm actually making it it's not just art and a dream)
I love the art style anon
I'm sorry but you missed the entire point of the thread
go back to square one
The game does look cool I just really hate the chracter design
I-I have some snaky dragon mook bots too!!
Oh well, I gotcha!
Now THAT looks cool and interesting.
hope you eventually find your audience, but man if I were you I'd rethink the gooner e-girl shit or else you'll end up like this guy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-RsyE9Gmk7k
I *guarantee* you if your protag looked something like pic related you'd have a big audience lining up already, instead of some guys banned from 100ft of the nearest schoolyards
She's not actually a e-girl, she's 18*! She tends to kind of vary a lot in appearance because Eiji (JP artist I hooked up with) has a very 00's art style where even girls with big breasts have that kind of ultra cutesie moemoe look, while others tend to draw her a little more mature looking like pic related (which is closer to my vision of her).
But yeah, no negotiating on her! The game is actually based on a 2 year ttrpg campaign I had many years ago, and she's one of my favorite characters I ever made! One of my whole reasons to make the game is I wanted to share her with the world <3
*I should note, I have nothing against e-girls, it's just I prefer girls to be mature and ripe for one main reason: I like small boobs, and I want to have some assurance that their boobs will not get any bigger. NOTHING infuriates me more than the "flat character shows up post-time-skip and now has cowbreasts" MY WIFE WILL BE FLAT FOR LIFE AND I WILL LOVE AND CHERISH THOSE TINY breasts FOR OUR ENTIRE MARRIED LIFE.
Oh also I like wide hips and big asses and e-girls don't got that.
Hm. Alright, the key design is definitely way better so I'll give you that.
>but man if I were you I'd rethink the gooner e-girl shit or else you'll end up like this guy
Counter point, you are on 4chink
Yeah instead you will get guys banned from 1km of the nearest animal shelter and zoo
Maybe if you made it a reverse Samus deal where the better you are at the game the more dragon she is in the ending.
Nope!
You might get to see more of the ancient dragon spirit that occupies the mech though!
MY WIFE
I wonder what you'd call a plant that works like catnip on dragons. Calling it dragonnip or drakenip or some shit just sounds lame.
Draculleaf depending on how it looks, I guess?
Dragon Blaze, a Psikyo shmup where you are a dragon rider who can control both the rider and dragon separately. Incredible game if you're into or curious about bullet hells
>can control both the rider and dragon separately
Alright, I'm interested.
This is the game, right?
Just realized I own this since it's on the Psikyo shooting stars alpha collection for switch. I should check it out, thanks anon.
I need truck-kun to visit me so I can isekai into a world where I can get a dragon companion of some sort.
I'll settle for more videogames.
Actually, does anybody have that picture of dragons in media?
This?
For me? It’s angelus
That's the one.
There's a couple of manga ones I know of that could be added to that.
IF BIG LIZARD KULVE CAN COUNT AS A DRAGON THEN SO CAN THIS DOG
>Picrel is from my favorite H game called Brave Soul.
That game rules. Carol was my favorite.
I just downloaded the game from jastusa but the letters are all pink coloured and the game is running at low fps. What is the secret? I tried compatibility with windows 98 and xp sp3
Divinity II is THE dragon game
Funny, Divinity has been recommended to twice in quick succession now.
Both as a dragon game, and a "inanimate object speaks to you game"
Yes I have very specific tastes
Pathfinder Wrath of the righteous has a dragon companion, An autistic one but dragon none the less
There's also the gold dragon path as mentioned on
Actually, there's still one expansion to go, right?
I've been holding off playing the game waiting for everything to be released.
I don't cosider golden dragon a path
Fricking fair enough really.
If it at least kept Aivu if you were an Azata first, but not even that.
Seriously. What the frick Owlcat.
I constantly flip flop between loving Aivu and wanting to rip her head off.
She's an annoying little shit, but she's my annoying little shit.
Not as companions, and they're not that heavily featured, but clashing the dragons in Vindictus always brings a sense of satisfaction.
sex
tell me more
Yes, please.
Specifically with female dragons such as these ones
huehuehuehuehuehue
Drakan, Order of The Flame and the sequel The Ancients Gates
Holy shit the thread survived until I woke cool. Didn't expect that.
>until I woke cool
Cool guy?
Eh I forgot a comma, haven't had my caffeine yet lol
i like dragon
Prove it
greg makes me feel funny when i play dd1
I think there's maybe a 30/40% chance Dragon's Dogma 2 has a friendly dragon NPC
That would pretty god damn cool.
Maybe the instead of the dragonforged we'll get a cool dragon.
Actually, is DD2 like a reboot of the story, a reimagining of the original?
Something like that, but we're not really clear on the details. There's enough stuff that's obviously the same that it's not a normal sequel or even a spiritual sequel, in a lot of ways they are kinda just making the game they wanted to make the first time, but the specific things that are similar feel a bit weird to me, like we see straight up Bluemoon Tower in one shot even though DD2 isn't in Gransys. I'm betting on Cycles shenanigans or whatever explaining it.

That's where I'm at.
Might be a previous cycle from DD1 or some such. Or it's just a complete reboot, we'll see.
puzzle and dragons is breddy cool
That's awesome.
Amazing.
Blue Dragon?
The game? Was interesting I guess.
dragon __toes__
Off the top of my head there's breath of fire and dragon quest, both allow the mc to turn into a dragon although the former takes it way further. Most digimon games have enough dragons to make a full party.
Would godzilla games count as a game about dragons?
