Dragon's Dogma

Can someone explain how damage calculation works in this game. I think I spent the last half to an hour battling against a "small" dragon and I dont think my character(lvl 30 Strider) did any damage, I think hit the heart hundreds of times and gave it several good shots with arrows but it feels like 95% of the damage dealt was done by my Sorcerer Pawn.
The whole game in regards to bosses seems to be "do absolutely no damage", "maybe if you hit the boss 80 times you will destroy one life bar" to "I dont know what you did but in less than 3 seconds 80% the life bar is gone".

Dragon's Dogma is both one of the funniest and most miserable games you'll ever play

It's like Attack - Defense = Damage dealt, so it's pretty linear, you're meant to come back when you have a better weapon basically.

      It's more complicated than that.

Not him, but it really is. You're doing 50 damage, it has 60 defense. The game awards you a token 1 damage.
Switching to Ranger might actually be a good idea because the ranger has higher damage attacks, which can help you get through its defense threshold.

Did you fail math? If attack-defense is zero or negative what's the answer?

There is a lot that goes into attack power though, it's not simply what is in the status menu. The full formula would look more like this.
                >Physical damage = ((SkillBaseStrength + (CharacterStrength x SkillCharacterStrengthMod x AugmentMultiplier) + (WeaponStrength x SkillWeaponStrengthMod x AugmentMultiplier) x BuffMultiplier x GrapplePowerBoost - Defense) x BluntOrSlashingMod x ArmorMod x ClimbingMod x FaunaMod x OtherMods
But no, it's "just" attack - defense....

                Anonymous

That's irrelevant. It doesn't change the fact that the damage calculation is a lot more involved than just "attack-defense" even if you try to dumb it down.

                >That's irrelevant
This thread is about OP asking why he's not doing any damage and he's not doing any damage because the calculation is ass. It is LITERALLY attack-defense.

At the end of the day the only thing that matters is if you feel you aren't doing enough damage you need better gear, buffs or elemental attacks. If you can't handle the way DD handles damage then just drop it.

      It's literally just that

There are also resistances/vulnerabilities, different moves have different scaling in regards to your weapon damage / character stats, plus base damage values attached to most moves....

Odds are your gear was too shit to get through its defenses overall but you could have used ice to your advantage, poisoned it, cursed it, tossed throwblasts.... Ultimately though there is no penalty for getting the frick out of there and coming back later.

I did poison it though, I chucked like 30 poison arrows to it and my main Pawn has the spell that poisons, couldnt really tell how much of a difference it made while it was active.

Poison damage is pretty low compared to the huge health pool of a drake.

As a general tip, big slow single hits will tend to have larger base damage components and higher damage multipliers. "Full Bend" will probably serve you better against a high defense opponent than "3-Fold" for example. The mage spell Commestion or whatever it is (the fire wall one) also has an uncharacteristically high base damage component and can be useful for damaging high defense enemies in the early game.

If you attack value doesn't surpass the target's defense value, you do basically nothing. Once you find the breakpoint and just exceed it you'll see a night/day difference.

It's amazing how shitty the damage calculation in this game is considering it came from the same company who made monster which is downright autistic.

You need to match their weakness. Hire a pawn that can enchant your weapon with ice and spam the help command whenever it wears off. Make sure your weapon is upgraded to 3 stars as well.

    Post your pawns.

Anglecite. Sorcerer. Low level and at the point where she's starting to get her shit together with some of the spells and a good sync box. WiP for endless BBI runs. Well, she would be if I wasn't so burned out on this game, so it's slow going. I played on PS3, 360 and now PC. Never thought I'd see the day a sequel was just around the corner.

Now if anyone has a spare gold Ur staff, that'd be great.

lmao at the autism in this thread
The other dude is right, it's attack - defense. Yes there are other modifiers. But at its core, attack is the only stat that matters. If you're not doing any damage and you stack modifiers, you'll still do 1 damage! But if you swap weapons, suddenly you can kill things!

    >W..welll acshally
    lmao

Again, it depends a lot on what attacks you are using. If you are plinking away with single arrows you aren't going to be doing shit, but a perfectly timed Deathly Arrow will still deal damage. Also it'd be totally reasonable to do more than 1 damage even with shit attack power by stacking mods well past 100%, seeing as they are all multiplicative instead of additive.

Deathly arrow adds a multiplier. If your attack is lower than the enemies defense:
        >0x4=0 -> rounds up to 1

          Anonymous

Dealthly arrow adds about 340 base damage, more than doubles your base strength, and multiplies your weapon attack power by as much as 700%. A normal shot is getting like one third as much of a base damage bonus and isn't even using your full character or weapon attack value. It's a huge fricking difference and is very likely to push you past an enemies defense. Drakes only have 400 defense and the base bonus alone puts you most of the way there.

Use the rusty bow with full upgrades, it does insane damage with its torpor effect. You could also use blast arrows too for more damage.

Some time ago I saw some epic tips and tricks video. It shown that a "throwblast" item that could be bought infinitely at the start of the game - takes your attack stat and just slams it to those who has been hit by it. Ignoring defense completely. Making it the strongest weapon in the game until very-very end.
This is shit, gay and invalidates literally everything there is to do.
