      Nope.
If it was released in the 7th gen, it would have placed 2nd to NieR, tied with Lost Odyssey.
However it was technically released in the 8th gen after the PS4 arrived for a 7th gen console so it battles for the #1 spot with another very special title. It's not Automata, Automata ranks 9th

          >Isn't it basically Nier prequel?
It is. NieR not only serves as a spiritual successor to Drakengard 1 by inheriting game mechanics but references its characters and themes beyond taking the ending that spawns it. While DoD2 is an unrelated sequel, by the time we roll around to Drag-on Dragoon 3, we're elbow deep. They're the same series at this point, reincarnation too.
The schizos that seethe about NieR are the same set of weirdos who'd seethe over the XIV raid; which serves more as a Drakengard raid thematically and even includes seeds of destruction.

It is. That doesn't magically make its fanbase big. All Drakengard game and even the first Nier didn't sell well and weren't played by that many. The only game that really performed well in that whole series was Automata.

Go look up the sales numbers, moron. And just because it didn't sell well doesn't mean it wasn't profitable to some extent, it's not like a lot of money went into making them. Although the original Nier even ended up in red according to its producer. They also kept releasing them because the games got a cult following but there's a good reason they remained incredibly low budget games. Automata was an outlier with its millions of sales.

Automata is why I get to have this cute Emil plush on my desk but damn if I don't hate what it did to the general vibe of the fandom. I wish some of that popularity would eventually trickle down to Drakengard so I could have nice merch of best girls.

                >Although the original Nier even ended up in red according to its producer.
NieR did make a profit but it was too late at that point to save Cavia. It didn't sell great worldwide but it did sell in Japan and yeah it got a cult following after it turned out that a host of reviewers were hacks.
If anyone remembers what the gaming press was like back then, it was before the big incident and we were still reading blogs and listicles on gamesradar and kotaku and well, a whole number of them focused on why we in the west were getting ugly dad NieR and panning the graphics which didn't sell the game at all. Then there were reviewers who only got the first ending and the other who refused to review it at all for the magazine it was a shit show. Unless you knew Taro, Cavia or Drakengard you weren't being sold on a narrative ARPG with multiple endings and replayability but on ugly graphics and ugh grinding! This isn't like Demon's Souls at all! ugh!

By the time NieR was finally out they didn't have any other contracts for licensed games going. Cavia was kept afloat on licensing deals and Bullet Witch wasn't a runaway success. People used to joke about whether cavia or level 5 would go under first and level 5 struck it out with Layton & Inazuma 11.
They did have one other original project in the works and you won't find much about it nowadays but we were slated to get a fourth Mistwalker game by Sakaguchi & Uematsu but with no licensing deals left the studio shuttered.
Saito was never employed by Cavia, he was always a producer at Square so Taro maintained his relationship and we eventually got DoD3 & N:A. If NieR had been unprofitable, we'd never have gotten these titles, never mind Automata having a AA budget. They're low budget titles but that's exactly the lane Taro and Saito have always been in: the A & AA space.

                >If NieR had been unprofitable, we'd never have gotten these titles,
It's their own words. Saito insisted to keep the series going. I think the interest from Platinumgames helped, as they were apparently interested in continuing Nier. Either way none of these games were some kind of big success, hence they kept being given very small budgets to work with.

                >And just because it didn't sell well doesn't mean it wasn't profitable to some extent
When your first sentence contradicts itself it's because you're full of shit. By definition any game that makes a profit sold well. It doesn't need to sell a gorillion copies, that stupid mentality is what gets you shit games made for the lowest common denominator.
Thanks to NieR and Drakengard Taro and Co. can make a living. These games are niche works and they're good being that way. For the rest read [...].

I don't contradict anything. The only thing that could have made them any money was Drakengard, and basically only in Japan's sales. And Nier didn't do shit. Read more dev interviews.

Asura's Wrath has the entire ending, which is a series of new boss battles, as a DLC. There's also two chapter DLC, but they're very optional and are 100% QTEs in a different art style instead of 3D.

You can watch any of the interviews with Taro and Saito where they refer to the games as ARPGs and list their influences like KH. It's an ARPG, SE class it as an ARPG, the producer classes it as an ARPG, the director classes it as an ARPG and the fans do too.

I finished it for the first time a few months ago. Just the first ending, I had no interest in continuing after that.
I won't sugarcoat it, I thought it was dogshit.
The moment that epitomized the game for me was that terrible desert level where you constantly lose health when you're not in the shade. The level is full of wolf enemies that burrow underground, except they were only programmed to be able to do that on flat terrain so in the desert level they instead just do a wolfy T-pose and float around intangibly in the air.
The whole game is like that. It's shoddily made to the point where it feels like the people making it just didn't care.
So many of the fights are just obnoxious to play. Bosses, random enemies, side quests. They just feel like a chore. The ghost enemies that don't take any knockback at all are the absolute worst; if I made a list of top ten most frustrating RPG enemies they'd make it.
And the battles that aren't obnoxious are just mediocre. Drag-On Dragoon 3 ASPIRES to mediocrity. I think it's the worst game I finished in 2023.

The only things I particularly liked about it where the character designs and the writing. The first half of the game has some particularly memorable moments and they were what pushed me to finish it.
I can't be mad at people who just skip Drag-On Dragoon entirely and just start with Nier. I don't think getting a broader perspective on the series is worth putting yourself through this game. I've played some stinky Square Enix games before but this one is up there.
