If it works well, sure why not? Dreamcast emulation looks like an australian nightmare, so if you have the original hardware just do it.

what did he mean by this? Dreamcast emulation is perfect on my machine.

Honestly if you still have blank CDs laying around just use those
The Dreamcast had 0 piracy protection
Just burn a disc pop it in and play

        please, please stop posting this.
it is not 1999 anymore the cdr media is identical

dreamcast is the RARE exception where the GDi image is better than a cd (lacks the shitty compressed audio+ cut content sometimes)

i have burned discs for: 3D0, pc engine cd, sony playstation, ps2, cdi, dreamcast, saturn, etc

no frickups and its been nearly 10 years

It was never the CD-R itself that caused the problem, it was the repack. If you're burning CD-Rs for your megacd, tgfx16 or whatever you're golden but the DC was a CAV drive and the GD-ROMs were created with that in mind. When brainlet pirates repacked the 1gig of data into an 800MB CD-R they lost all of the optimised layout, resulting in a Zzzzt-zzzzzt-szztztz-ztztz-ztttttz for every single access to every single tiny little file. No shit it was killing drive mechanisms.

The reality is there's no reason to ever burn discs in the current day and age. ODEs and emulation cover everything you'd want to play.

the serial port has slow as frick data transfer speeds the games lag like frick, it’s worthless

      This.

Are there any downsides to these? My drive works, but I want to consider my options for the future if my laser ever goes bad.

I have one like that and it works great, no downsides. Shit takes 60-80 days to arrive if it gets stuck in customs (mine did). So order one now if you want it anytime soon.

I miss the days of chink gdemu clones for 30 bucks. I'm a dumb goy and bought a mode for my Dreamcast but have put a lot of them gdemu clones in my friends consoles

          How much?

Yes, just not the newer firmware versions
Although he’s exaggerating, they are 40-50

What does the newer firmware bring to the table? And how much is a legit gdemu?

Go on AliExpress. Sure it's not exactly 30, but it's not much more.

Nta but for me I bought one of these and they ended up just sending me an sd card with some isos on it, so beware.

What isos were they and why would be wary of an SD card with a few games pre loaded on it?

                >why would be wary of an SD card with a few games pre loaded on it?
for me at least I bought it under the impression that i was paying $20 for a gdemu clone, not an sd card with games I can download for free

As long as you get the latest ones they're essentially perfect. The only two games that had issues on earlier firmwares are Code Veronica and Skies of Arcadia. Arcadia would crash sometimes if you tried to watch the title screen for too long and Code Veronica had a glitch that made it impossible to finish. Someone actually made a patched vers of CV though so even if you have the older clone gdemus you'll be fine. I say go for it, I love mine and installation was painless. I wish every ODE was as simple, cheap and compatible like the gdemu. I've been playing my DC a lot more since I got it.

Post a link to the ad homosexual, guarantee it won't come with a gdemu for that price. It states "for gdemu" Chinese are yellow israelites don't fall for their tricks.

I wish someone would make a mod for the Dreamcast that allows you to boot games from an SD card while also leaving the CD drive intact.

Would be nice, but don't think it'll happen just because of how niche that market would be. Especially considering how many people get a gdemu because their drive broke in the first place.

I bought one of these SD adapters because it was cheap as frick and thought it might be a decent way to play games without burning discs.

It's fricking awful and not worth it in the slightest. Buy a chink gdemu or don't buy anything.

They work OK, not even as "good" as USB loading PS2 games tho. You have to optimize the ISO before loading it and you have to have a Dreamshell disc in the CD tray. They're really only good for homebrew like emulator and backing up your VMU.

Details? I never did that and I had a bad experience, maybe this woudl improve it somewhat.

Last time I fricked around with it there were specific SD ISOs that were optimized for it. I forget how I did it as it's been like a decade.
