Except TLOU1 actually had a multiplayer mode on PS3 at launch and it was good and it was then removed from all "remastered" versions because they fired anyone who knew how to make a game.

Yeah this seems like a pretty big deal: an official statement that it's not worth it to put up multiplayer servers with the development costs of modern AAA if you can't also get a mentally ill rich kid somewhere to spend $1000 on the game

Compared to the first one, yes.
        In terms of sales, no.
In terms of the franchise's future, yes.

They will use the second season of the TV show and just retcon most of 2's story.

          >Retcon 2’s plot
Didn’t they retcon the plot of the first game in the first season to justify the things that’s going to happen in 2? I heard they made Joel a less sympathetic character in the show

            I didn't watch it and I couldn't care less.

            Anonymous

They tried their hardest to spin the narrative to be more in line with 2’s retcon bs. Joel is le evil bad guy for saving Ellie so they play le heckin sad music. And Ellie is a sadistic psychopath who gets “activated” by violence. There’s probably more but I only fully saw the first ep and snippets of other eps.
It’s hilarious tho cus despite trying to spin the narrative they got the exact opposite reaction of what they wanted, everyone loved Joel and thought he did the right thing. The cherry on top is now they’re fricked no matter what they do, if they change season 2’s plot at all it’s an admission that part 2 isn’t as perfect as these gays claim, and if they keep it the same we’ll see the same backlash we saw 3 years ago

What kind of mindset is that? Of course they would have known since day one that a MP would be supported for a long time. I bet they saw that no one cares about the MP aspect and it would flop big time, so they cut their losses and move on.

how the frick is it a lie that it takes manpower to make a game? All they're saying is they'd rather spend it on single player games rather than a game they've already sold.

        Anonymous

They employ 400+ people. Either they came up with the most ambitious MP game of all time and somehow had no idea it would take so much work (i.e. they are complete morons, which I suppose is possible), or the end result turned out poorly, so they are telling people that the reason is that they want to commit to Singleplayer games, which they know people like to hear. (Much simpler explanation)

You still do need a lot of people to make content and its not even content they can share with the single player game they are making right now. Yea they could have released a battle royale game and have a skeleton crew run it but no one would keep playing it if there isn't any new content.

Then don't make it live service. Make a fun PvP DLC for TLOU2 so you can play as different characters from the story in slightly modified maps from the campaign, like they did for the Uncharted games. It doesn't have to be a years-long masterpiece that requires the manpower of 20000 people to keep going.

Every single modern "AAA" game studio is incompetent beyond belief and should stop making games. These gays could've simply copy+pasted the multiplayer from the first game and called it a day. It takes talent to frick up this bad.

      Money.

Sony knows it'll be costly to restructure. They know their only GAAS studio is incompetent know and that GAAS is dying. They know it'll be costly to maintain with events to maintain player retention because these kinds of games need constant new content to stay alive. PS5 hardware sales have been strong, I think they honestly just want to focus on GTA6 and other third party marketing at this point and scale down on first party games.

A good GAAS game fricking prints money and TLoU mp was extremely good. It would've almost certainly been a hit.
Whatever they struggled with, I doubt it was gameplay. The leaked stuff looked very similar to the original game. I think they had trouble to increase the scope of that + content roadmap and monetization. Basically cancer killed the patient which is a shame.

You didn't hear about earlier this year when they released some artwork and descriptions of the multiplayer experience they were making? It wasn't just regular multiplayer, they had Kojima tier ideas about some big openworld co-op multiplayer story on the scale of a full AAA game.

        >In ramping up to full production, the massive scope of our ambition became clear. To release and support The Last of Us Online we'd have to put all our studio resources behind supporting post launch content for years to come, severely impacting development on future single-player games. So, we had two paths in front of us: become a solely live service games studio or continue to focus on single-player narrative games that have defined Naughty Dog's heritage.
They didn't want to turn into a Gaas studio.
Since the fricker is finally gone, they are free to go back to their movie games.

I don't understand what the fricking hang-up was with TLOU2 multiplayer. The bar to clear was on the floor, just do the bare minimum and have it ready by launch when people would still care. I loved the tacked-on multiplayer of games like Dead Space 2 and Max Payne 3 even though they didn't last. Give people enough to get the game out of their system if the campaign didn't quite give them their feel and keep it in the spotlight on YouTube/Twitch a little longer. It doesn't need to become the next big thing as this standalone forevergame. They probably kept trying to overthink it as some live service bullshit and it turned into typical feature creep development hell where overly ambitious dicknoses get absorbed by the Sisyphean task of making all these competing ideas come together as a cohesive whole. People would've fine mindlessly running around slitting each other's throats for a little while, but that doesn't support long-term revenue models demanded by MBAs and shareholders I guess.

      Anonymous

Bungie's expertise told Sony that TLOU MP didnt have enough reasons to keep people playing the game without heavy investments into story content, cosmetics and developing new modes. ND didnt want to invest more than that so they cancelled it entirely today.

Yeah, their mistake is to make it standalone. That way people expect a live service kind of affair that you have to maintain for an extended period of time compared to the usual extra mode that only take a year - year and a half of dev time.
