Let's not forget the horrible amount of backtracking you have to do during the literal fetch quest. The game gives you skip travel points that still require you to keep going through large portions of the map over and over. Taking the sprout from the starting area back to it again for example to get the candle.

I agree that it's easily the worst part of the game. I was also steadily enjoying the gameplay to that point and just expected the alternate levels (unseen Futures/Pasts of levels) were either going to be a side campaign or more than likely DLC. I'm glad I got to see them, if nothing else, but not in the style they went for. It was to the detriment of the rest of the game.
