Who's in charge?

Where are people working on this? How many are there?

Our understanding of Unreal Engine's evolution from UE1 to UE3 is that it was fairly linear, but UE4 introduced major departures.

This is also why, although chiefly for lack of publicly-available UE1 documentation, we're using so many UE2 and UE3 resources.

For anons more familiar with UE4 and UE5, this article may help bridge the gap:

Randy, George being the fricking reason that DNF got delayed to hell and back, and industry and audience moving on from "Haha, shooter guy does funny line" games. The best you'd probably get is a cameo, or a "Neo boomer shooter" or sidescroller throwback. We still have Shadow Warrior.

Randy had little involvement with DNF only at the very beginning when he was working at 3D Realms and at the very end when Gearbox bought the IP, it was mostly George's fault. George and 3D Realms were the main people in charge of DNF's development, all Gearbox did was add in a multiplayer mode and give the gane the finishing touches to make it something releasable, which they only had to delay it again once to do.

George & Scott's fault*. Imagine being one of the founders of the company and just not doing your job for most important project up to date. He should've set hard deadlines as that's was within his responsibilities, but what he did instead? Nothing, just putting minimum effort into different titles like Prey & Max Payne.
No wonder he's so insecure that he decided to take over his own micro nu-Atari and live in a bubble.

listen to his interview on the retro hour. The first half of the interview he sounds like a cool guy. Eventually you realize he is a spoiled liberal c**t who craves attention and adulation. It's clear when he starts talking about Trump. I'm not a fan of Trump either, but you can tell that he voices his dislike of Trump because he thinks it will signal his status and score social brownie points. Such an awesome voice wasted on such a miserable douche.

the left is in charge of who gets canceled, it's rare that they cancels one of their own. In extreme cases when it does happen, it's usually temporary

                > I didn't write that as a manifesto. We've got very little active work being actually done on the code-base, and we're still firmly in the "poke it with a stick and see if it moves" phase.
That's fine. Having worked on a few volunteer based modding projects, I'd emphasize the importance of establishing a clear vision for your project early on. If your project survives, you will inevitably run into disagreements and drama when people are unhappy with this or that and having some kind of founding charter to refer to when saying "no, we're doing in this way" will help a lot. It doesn't need to be long an verbose, even a few well-written sentences accompanied by some bullet points should be enough. The key is to get clear about what the end result will look like, and then clearly and succinctly describe that vision in writing.

There was even a project I was involved with recently that was mostly being worked on by guys in their 30s, and you wouldn't believe the amount of drama there was. Disagreements over the direction of the project led to a couple different factions forming. They communicated outside the discord server in private group DMs, where they plotted ways to break the project up and sabotage it. These were normal grown ass men with families and careers doing this shit, not some trannies on meds and disability payments. Anyway, the project died, and most if not all of the drama could have been avoided if everyone who joined the project was bought in to a single vision from the start.

this will be the undoing of the project. Someone needs to take charge.

I know you think that since people aren't being paid that you have no right to dictate anything, but having a project with a clear vision and someone steering everyone in the right direction is a lot more motivating than slowly watching the project fall apart due to lacking cohesion and direction as everyone tries to do things their own way.

      OP/PowerShell paste eater reporting in.

I didn't write that as a manifesto. We've got very little active work being actually done on the code-base, and we're still firmly in the "poke it with a stick and see if it moves" phase.

None of the people who joined saying they had C++ knowledge have presented anything, so I'm taking it upon myself in light of how unstable DukeEd is to git gud until I can fix that shit.

Here's what I've done so far:
      >10% of my way through a 112hr Udemy course on C++.
      >Read through half of the UScript book in the OP.
      >Watched about a quarter of a UE4/UE5 w/ C++ Udemy guide.

That UScript book and Udemy course were useful for me getting my bearings with engine-specific vocab and concepts I wasn't aware of before.

I've also been looking through all the DirectX 8 stuff I can find.

My top priority now for my own contributions to the project is bringing myself up to speed on C++, then finishing the second half of that UScript textbook, so I can map out the codebase and prep documentation to more rapidly onboard people.

I'm balancing this with a social life and prepping to switch jobs, so it'll be a few months before I'm able to start effectively bugfixing and asking informed, useful questions.

I think it's at least safe to say that I'm in this for the long haul.

The engine is so old that people are still figuring out how to even use it right now. I think it was also customized by 3DR so some of the things that work for Unreal modding doesn't really work in DukeEd.

        Anonymous

        >I think it was also customized by 3DR
Its Unreal 1 with some 2 and 3 features duct tapped to it. Its funny because DNF 2011 still used it.

I agree, at least once all the bugfixing and tweaks to the engine are made (if possible). 3D Realms had a general vision for what DNF wanted to be but it's so messy that the people working on it has a lot of creative freedom with the missing areas. It's probably best to lay everything out asap.

It resembles the model from 2011 DNF, this fact alone makes it trash.
2007 Dook's look is the peak, and this model is available on the internet. Download it, dumb it down to DNF'01 standard and we're good to go.
