Ebert single-handedly made game devs so insecure they turned their games into expensive, bloated glorified movies. What a chad.

But enough about the consequences of Half-Life.
Half Life didn't turned God of War into Dad of Son.
God of War was already a movie game in its first installation.
>God of War was a moviegame
RE4 is a moviegame too amirite? Just because it has QTEs doesn't mean it's a moviegame.
No, 15 year olds becoming 35 year olds with children but still playing with children's toys themselves did that.
>15 year olds becoming 35 year olds and making video games did that
Fixed. Modern gaming is shit because modern developers are shit.
It was an arcade beat em up game with light puzzles and platforming. Modern Dad of War is Last of Us with Norse Gods.
Video games were always made by middle-aged men. All that has changed is the demographic.
>Video games were always made by middle-aged men.
Demographics changed but millenials are the ones still making those games. Look up to any of the video game studio and their higher ups. They've been in the industry for at least 20 years.
This may come as a shock to you zoomers who think God of War used to be good because you played it while you were still in diapers, but it was in fact always shit.
GoW originally was pretty much Max Payne but with swords and myth.
The metaphohore fits, ur done. It's no wonder it even turns into a family drama.
Most of people aside of salty Xcucks fans liked it fine.
>consequences of Half-Life.
You can blame NES NInja Gaiden for that
Actually that would be Metal Gear
I can't tell if it's the nintendo Xbox dickriding or that Ganker within itself is the biggest collective of people who don't understand that MGO existed.
It's insane how much Half-Life was able to get away with its absolute fricking garbage gunplay. Then again, it's not like most of its proponents have played many other games that came out in the late 90s: they still honestly think that the game innovated much beyond championing skeletal animation systems.
buh muh physics
bounce the can into the trash can its epic look at it
I find it more funny that people say that Half Life 2 innovated physics in games when:
A. Physics have already been present in videogames before HL2, like even Postal 2 made by a literally-who at the time studio with no money had physics simulation
B. Valve didn't even write their own physics engine. They just bought an existing library and just used it everywhere.
>They just bought an existing library and just used it everywhere.
And even when the people do acknowledge they do this they claim "But Valve heavily modified it." The modification was just dumbing it down so multiplayer would work.
Yeah, I'm infinitely more impressed by something like Glover than Valve just using Havok, or even Valve's implementation of Havok versus something like Psi-Ops
So? What movie star writes their own script, or designs their clothes?
A dev using their own libraries in this age is likely to either be an OP commando dev, or a big corp with a vengeance against open source; both need what they make, more than anyone else.
What other games pre-HL2 had full-on physics puzzles and gameplay elements anyway? Are ya' gonna count Windows Pinball?
>What other games pre-HL2 had full-on physics puzzles and gameplay elements anyway?
Max Payne 2 (2003)
Postal 2 (2003)
Trespasser (1998) (okay fine this one was more of an expirment but still)
And these are just the ones I can think of. I'm sure other anons can name some other games that did physics interaction and your precious physics puzzles before HL2.
Yes....Impressive....I'm glad it's not unheard of. It does not diminish the success of HL2, but it does show that physics are not "it's gimmick".
The physics was good, but there was something else about HL2. An accident, if anything. A happy accident. It's absolutely cheaty but, it made the physics component, and engine, a major selling point.
If anything, it's controversial enough of an issue for how people know, yet refuse to discuss it, but; I think a sizeable amount of the success attributed to the game was because of the leak of it's source code and, valve's subsequent embracing of steam as a place for mods. It was a good game but, it was also it's own locked box of a videogame. That "problem" almost made HL2 into the budding game dev's Tech Demo.
The Physics were a great deal of fun to play with there, as an early gamer. It was not only cheap in the orange box bundle, but the abundance of huge freaking nerds creating content for the game, multiplied my purchase. I had many variations of the same game with impressive physics.
If it went wrong, they'd probably supercharge customers by controlling the release environments of mods and making modding a DLC component on an individual basis without thinking. The modern desire for instant-gratification tends to inspire putting monetary problems out immediately, like they are fires, instead of really using strategy.
But yeah. Those games didn't have that happen and, I can say; they all appear to even use physics in, possibly more creatve ways. I saw Psi-ops above me too, so; i'm called out proper, here.
Yeah, I know. It takes talent, serious insight and self-confidence to do that. Not saying it hasn't been done, or even that it's particularly difficult; but mass-production tends to a give-or-take mentality of sacrificing one thing for another as an easy hack. If the dev can get beyond that sort of lazy and fallacious thinking, they'll make a good game.
Rocket: Robot on Wheels
>What movie star writes their own script
That's not exactly unheard of.
neither of these things are responsible for phone drones.
Half life 1 has little to no story, people acting like it created movie games because some fat doom boomer youtuber told them so is moronic.
what makes a MOVIE critic think his opinion is correct on VIDEO GAMES?
He wasn't even a good movie critic. Armond White absolutely mogs him and also isn't a dead b***h
>thinking a guy who doesn't even understand the medium can effectively criticize it
May as well ask a child their thoughts, they are just as valid as eberts.
That insults children more, but I doubt you'd ever appreciate their perspective.
No, that was economics and trends.
Basic observation shows that there are many games that are art by basic literal definition, and in other interpretation of the term.
Snobbish stances on any select medium have little bearing on its nature, and only in a select people to stick to them, anyway.
literally who gives a single frick about what some onions babyfaced literal WHO thinks? he looks likes he supports immigrants moving into his home. i dont give a frick about what that gaygoid thinks.
RDR2 is basically playing a movie better than most art Hollywood shits out
Isn't this the homosexual who couldn't grasp that Starship troopers was satire?
They hated him because he spoke the truth. All muh "art" games are just failed movies kek and games get left by the wayside so quickly they'll never get the same level of respect as true art.
assuming you regard art as being some form of medium that is intended to convey a profound meaning or emotion then games had examples since 1980 with missile defence
That being said it's not that games cannot be art, it is that art is a term so broad now that is fricking meaningless. As pretentious wankery goes, his lot has let a lot of utter trash right on by, he is not discriminatory ENOUGH.
I've never given a shit if a game can be considered art. Doesn't change a single thing on how I enjoy or feel about them. I can enjoy a story told in a game or any other artistic expression in the product regardless if it's considered art or not in the end. Who fricking cares.
>israelite posts a thread glorifying a israelite post-ironically for israeliteing israelites into being more israeli
Can you frick off?
Video games are not art. This is a good thing; fun should come first.
There's an art to having fun
Art has entertainment purposes. People wrote and played songs and epics thousands of years before today just because they were entertaining, not because they were interested in receiving praise from ancient redditors.
Art can be shallow and still be art anon. I don't mind the gatekeeping of fine art but the gatekeeping of art as a concept is fricking moronic.
Movies can never be art by his exact same criteria he's a hypocrite or an idiot.
He admitted that he didn't know what he was talking about and shouldn't have said it in the first place.
That doesn't make him any less right.
>That doesn't make him any less right.
It does because he's wrong on a base level, he admitted so. He fixes this by stating that it was his opinion which means dick all.

What a chad.
Because he was constantly berated by a legion of fanboys after that. The article "Okay Kids, Play on My Lawn" says it all.
>VEDEHHR GEYHRS KEHHEEVVER VEE EEEHRT
jawdropping
The game that even Ebert admitted is kino. You have played it, right?
Why should I care what some random old man said?
Why do you believe video games need to be art?
They are made of art, then they aren't art? How does that work...It's art! It's like martial arts, but with your hands only!
They don't need to be art, they simply are art whether you agree with it or not.
Roger Ebert also talked mad shit about Freddy Got Fingered, then admitted a year later he was still thinking about it
video games are fundamentally an art form, however a bunch of morons just want it to be movies instead of its own unique thing which is what makes it not truly art
Film is a bastardization of theater and it will never be real art
Just because it's not a screenshot doesn't mean I don't recognize a Twitter thread when I see it. Go the frick back and stay there.
Nani?!?!?
How in the frick did you do that???
>Speaks lies
>Jaw rots away and dies
Literally who? If vidya isn't art then why do concept artists work on them, checkmate.
And that is a good thing.
thats a good thing. art is exclusively for whites and was always dominated and judged by them. so even if games were seen as art itd be white as frick which means itd just become sjw woke trash today
He has gone too far now
Video games are the highest form of art.
You know it when you experience top tier gameplay combined with amazing sound design and suitable graphics.
6th gen experimented with the right analog stick and it just barely cleared the hurdle of being unusable trash, the main problem is that the Wii didn't delay long enough to include gyro as default on launch, so Microsoft managed to convince everyone to stick with the right analog stick through 7th gen due to their cheap production value console that didn't have motion controls and the PS3 had no inertia of its own to prompt anyone to use the gyro for anything, so the Xbox remained the lowest common denominator.
The problem with relying on barely usable trash for an input method is that the game has to compromise to make it seem usable, hence a slow descent into moviegames as developers refined the games that worked with dual analog, which were primarily slow, unengaging and setpiece laden.
It's no coincidence that the primary source of moviegames was to be found in 3rd person cover based shooters that routinely disabled most of the functionality of one or more thumbsticks, this was the most refined method of compensating for poor input that required little thought from the developer (at least for 7th and 8th gen).
guy's a jawless homosexual but in a way he's kind of right. Most older games' writing (compare the most popular movies' writing to most popular games') is a bit shit. Naturally, people who grew up playing those games are now the people making them and those people didn't improve on the writing but made it worse. Now this isn't set in stone. Some games are written better than some movies, Not all older games are written better than modern games and how people with half a brain avoid game dev.
Forget Ebert, HE was right.
People critical of videogames don't have a funny bone in their body.
