Fixed. Modern gaming is shit because modern developers are shit.

This may come as a shock to you zoomers who think God of War used to be good because you played it while you were still in diapers, but it was in fact always shit.

It was an arcade beat em up game with light puzzles and platforming. Modern Dad of War is Last of Us with Norse Gods.

Video games were always made by middle-aged men. All that has changed is the demographic.

It's insane how much Half-Life was able to get away with its absolute fricking garbage gunplay. Then again, it's not like most of its proponents have played many other games that came out in the late 90s: they still honestly think that the game innovated much beyond championing skeletal animation systems.

I find it more funny that people say that Half Life 2 innovated physics in games when:
        A. Physics have already been present in videogames before HL2, like even Postal 2 made by a literally-who at the time studio with no money had physics simulation
        B. Valve didn't even write their own physics engine. They just bought an existing library and just used it everywhere.

          >They just bought an existing library and just used it everywhere.
And even when the people do acknowledge they do this they claim "But Valve heavily modified it." The modification was just dumbing it down so multiplayer would work.

Yeah, I'm infinitely more impressed by something like Glover than Valve just using Havok, or even Valve's implementation of Havok versus something like Psi-Ops

So? What movie star writes their own script, or designs their clothes?

A dev using their own libraries in this age is likely to either be an OP commando dev, or a big corp with a vengeance against open source; both need what they make, more than anyone else.

What other games pre-HL2 had full-on physics puzzles and gameplay elements anyway? Are ya' gonna count Windows Pinball?

            Max Payne 2 (2003)
            Postal 2 (2003)
Trespasser (1998) (okay fine this one was more of an expirment but still)
And these are just the ones I can think of. I'm sure other anons can name some other games that did physics interaction and your precious physics puzzles before HL2.

Isn't this the homosexual who couldn't grasp that Starship troopers was satire?

Yes....Impressive....I'm glad it's not unheard of. It does not diminish the success of HL2, but it does show that physics are not "it's gimmick".

The physics was good, but there was something else about HL2. An accident, if anything. A happy accident. It's absolutely cheaty but, it made the physics component, and engine, a major selling point.

If anything, it's controversial enough of an issue for how people know, yet refuse to discuss it, but; I think a sizeable amount of the success attributed to the game was because of the leak of it's source code and, valve's subsequent embracing of steam as a place for mods. It was a good game but, it was also it's own locked box of a videogame. That "problem" almost made HL2 into the budding game dev's Tech Demo.

The Physics were a great deal of fun to play with there, as an early gamer. It was not only cheap in the orange box bundle, but the abundance of huge freaking nerds creating content for the game, multiplied my purchase. I had many variations of the same game with impressive physics.

If it went wrong, they'd probably supercharge customers by controlling the release environments of mods and making modding a DLC component on an individual basis without thinking. The modern desire for instant-gratification tends to inspire putting monetary problems out immediately, like they are fires, instead of really using strategy.

But yeah. Those games didn't have that happen and, I can say; they all appear to even use physics in, possibly more creatve ways. I saw Psi-ops above me too, so; i'm called out proper, here.

              >What movie star writes their own script
              That's not exactly unheard of.

Yeah, I know. It takes talent, serious insight and self-confidence to do that. Not saying it hasn't been done, or even that it's particularly difficult; but mass-production tends to a give-or-take mentality of sacrificing one thing for another as an easy hack. If the dev can get beyond that sort of lazy and fallacious thinking, they'll make a good game.

6th gen experimented with the right analog stick and it just barely cleared the hurdle of being unusable trash, the main problem is that the Wii didn't delay long enough to include gyro as default on launch, so Microsoft managed to convince everyone to stick with the right analog stick through 7th gen due to their cheap production value console that didn't have motion controls and the PS3 had no inertia of its own to prompt anyone to use the gyro for anything, so the Xbox remained the lowest common denominator.
The problem with relying on barely usable trash for an input method is that the game has to compromise to make it seem usable, hence a slow descent into moviegames as developers refined the games that worked with dual analog, which were primarily slow, unengaging and setpiece laden.
It's no coincidence that the primary source of moviegames was to be found in 3rd person cover based shooters that routinely disabled most of the functionality of one or more thumbsticks, this was the most refined method of compensating for poor input that required little thought from the developer (at least for 7th and 8th gen).

guy's a jawless homosexual but in a way he's kind of right. Most older games' writing (compare the most popular movies' writing to most popular games') is a bit shit. Naturally, people who grew up playing those games are now the people making them and those people didn't improve on the writing but made it worse. Now this isn't set in stone. Some games are written better than some movies, Not all older games are written better than modern games and how people with half a brain avoid game dev.
