This stuff is the equivalent of Dumbledore being gay. It's post-release nonsense he's just shitting out for brownie points. The game does not make light of abuse either that's an extremely delusional perspective someone only came up with once they realized they needed to dislike it to virtue signal that they're against "woke" media. The entire game is morbid and over the top but the abuse is very much a bad thing and the game isn't cute in any imaginable way unless you're into literal piles of shit.

I also like all of his smaller projects I tried (of which there's a bunch). You just feel like all of the games have a specific vision, and that the dev has a specific way of doing things in the way he likes. All of those other devs also feel like they work within a specific vision across all of their projects as well, and that "personality" really makes them stand out.

dicey dungeons is his only other game on steam to this date and it doesnt really hold up to vvvvvv or super hexagon. really good for a casual playthrough, but the extra challenge content is truly dogshit and will make your day worse, don't bother going for 100%. get it on sale if you want to try it. the game's ost is the highlight.
          >vlambeer
nuclear throne lives up to the hype. the gunplay is extraordinary and you can bring untold death and destruction to your enemies once you are accustomed to the environment and difficulty. if you ever decide to try it out, the game never goes on sale so don't try waiting for one.
you can also see https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1397456507 for a guide on how to access the 60fps setting if you decide to try it out. it makes a huge difference compared to default 30fps.
would not know a thing about their other games, nuclear throne is the big one but you can expand into their other titles if you would like, no idea how it would turn out for you though.

meh, meat boy and binding of isaac are kinda lame, i get the appeal, but they're not something i'd ever remember fondly or want to return to anytime soon

      Anonymous

Meat Boy is insanely overrated but I think that's because most people don't know what the frick Jumper 2 is. Binding of Isaac I find to be a much more impressive game but it also single handedly started the roguelite trend. It's the same feelings I have towards Minecraft. Great games I spend hundreds of hours on having fun but the effects it had on the industry anger me. Not his fault though I suppose.

        Anonymous

And to expand on the jumper vs meatboy stuff. Super Meatboy does pretty much everything better than Jumper 1,2, or 3. It's just it's not as original as people often seem to feel. The draw of meat boy imo is that it's a precision platformer with extremely fluid controls so it takes a genre that usually filters people and it makes it wildly more accessible. I had fun with the game when it came out but I would literally never think of it again if it didn't gain this absurd level of respect and popularity. It's not particularly hard compared to other games in the genre, it's not particularly interesting, the controls are really smooth but that kinda takes away from the satisfaction of beating a level compared to something like Dustforce where you're doing these precise timed inputs to get the most out of your movement. It's just an alright game and I don't give it credit for it's foundation because that's literally just Jumper. Then what's even more annoying is Celeste comes along, made by the guy who made Jumper, with significantly better level design than Meat Boy, and everyone starts saying Celeste is a meat boy clone kek. Fricking moronic.

I do broadly respect the guy. But he also really popularized the trend of making games more and more random and less and less predictable the more you play them. And I kind of really loathe that trend.
It's like games designed like this incentivized you against actually playing them more.

  17. 8 months ago
    Anonymous

I dunno, his games are still pretty fun, and I have over 1k hours between both versions of Isaac.
But I don't think I'm willing to give ANYONE credit as the BEST game creator if they put out DLC for their game, unfinished, and then actively make the other half of the DLC it's own purchase and sabotaging parts of the game out of spite.
And that's even including repenting for that.

it feels as though the age of the celeb game developer is over, in general, but especially with indies.
That kind of attention and leaning into the belief of 'auteurism' was a breeding ground for some really pretentious fart smellers, but at least it was entertaining to see. I would 100% watch an indie game the movie 2

well its not especially barren compared to AAA or anything, its just it was really prominent at one point and it feels like there aren't as many names anymore. I dunno if I have it completely wrong, it just feels that way to me.

          Anonymous

there are plenty of names, they just dont generate discussion because the market went from being controlled by a few press people/indie circles to being controlled by valve with their algorithm, and valve doesnt care about who makes their games (which is good). there are hundreds of indie devs who have made millions, sometimes tens of millions of dollars off steam who youve never heard about

            Anonymous

well sure, of course indie's doing great, and there are tons of games that are doing well where a single or a few people had most control over it creatively, but I was talking about figureheads, thats why I posted those pictures. Theres not really any new Phil Fishes or Jon Blows or Notches to have a twitter outburst or shitty take

              Anonymous

yea, what im saying is that the figureheads were possible when the scene was smaller and a few people deciding to push one person or their game had a much higher effect on the market. now its all algorithm based with steam + the size of the market increased so much that that doesnt happen as easily anymore

              Anonymous

figureheads were all whoever the GDC cult wanted to push. There was some scandal back then about how they would only give those awards to those in close ties with the tastemakers who ran the thing

Iirc he advised on some of the item tweaks, but most of repentence was just porting Antibirth and adding a new final boss like Afterbirth was supposed to come with.

          Makes sense.
I bet that after what happened with Pixel, he is a lot more cautious when dealing with Nicalis and attaching his name to everything BOI is a part of that.

I liked the end is nigh, but I never hear anyone talking about it.

the end is nigh barely gets mentioned anywhere and is absent from people's minds despite having the same if not better gameplay than super meat boy did (smb is still kino tho.) edmund and co. never signal boosted the game beyond the initial announcement probably because they felt it wasn't 'gamebreaking' or 'revolutionary' enough like their other titles. big mistake. it still holds up on its own without having to seek refuge in experimental game mechanics to work.

It had basically zero advertisement and pretty came out of nowhere. Although it's because most of it was repurposed from that cancelled time fcuk sequel that gave playtesters headaches.

One dude on twitter tried to call him out on having a room that looks like a swastika and everyone just laughed at him.
Also I'm pretty sure there's at least 1 person that complained about Steven.
