None of the map is like this, areas are severely blocked off by cliffs, mountains and pits, you have to actually navigate shit and search for ramps, elevators and horse jump pads.
That's why the world is so engaging compared to other open world games where you can put a marker on the map and beeline toward it.
90% of people that played Elden Ring havent played a previous Fromsoft game so they have no reference point besides assassins creed or whatever else they have played. This is also the reason why Fromsoft is now dead or about to die btw

I started losing interest about half way through, I still beat the game but I'm not gonna 100% it. It was too buggy and broken at launch for me to say it was actually good and there's so many reused bosses, quite a let down.

There are only 2 things that were a minus for me.
1. The story. Dark Souls had a wayyyy better story and lore. I don't know if it's because of GRRM or Miyazaki working together, but the story was very shallow compared to even BloodBorne. Hopefully the DLCs will have better stories.

It's a good souls game, but it has some issues.
Bosses are recycled too often, too many enemies are flat ds3 retextures, torrent has no progression, bosses are to aggressive, level progression over such a wide area makes a lot of fights either way to hard or way to easy.
But name a better AAA game that's come out in the last 5 years. I can only think of ace combat 7

The online is certainly the worst it has ever been in a fromsoft game. It's like they genuinely wanted people to stay single player and never touch online except for co-op. I don't even care about invasions that much but I expected the fricking coliseum to be available from day 1 this time around to do some nice 2v2 fights with a friend of mine. The fricking thing is THERE, it WILL happen but they're either gonna drop an update later to access it or they will make you pay for it which is fricking moronic.
And yeah the game in general is kind of a slog, not enough gameplay changed to justify the name change. Should have been Dark Souls 4 from the start.

but to conclude, the online IS the worst, but not for the reasons you listed. it's because this is the first souls game that doesn't allow for invasions when you play solo, except if you use the tongue, which nobody ever does. it killed invasions of solo players, which in turn killed the game for me, because I always loved opening myself for invasions, but not without cooldown and for 2 invaders at the same time.

Elden Ring was my first dark souls game and I loved it. Played 110 hours with all the side content completed in my first run. Tried to play demon souls and immediately hate it. I just found out jumping was introduced in elden ring. How am I supposed to Jump R2 my way to victory?

All that changes past that is window dressing. I didn’t expect them to be able to carry over the atmosphere of their games to open world. That’s the main thing. They not only managed to carry it over but managed to exceed it. I was always looking out to be disappointed but never was, except for the relatively unsatisfying endings.
Then you had the expanded combat. My only gripe is that they didn’t include Sekiro’s deflect mechanics somehow, like make certain relentless enemies that required deflecting as opposed to just blocking and/or rolling.
If you had take any From game to a desert island, it would OBVIOUSLY be Elden Ring. Delusional to say otherwise. If you don’t like From games at all that’s fair enough (would be interested to know which games you think are so much better in 2022), but ER is clearly peak From when it easily could’ve ended up being a lazy hop-on-the-train open world. Blocking with a greatshield and spear poking + doing guard counters is insanely effective, and vs many encounters and bosses it's easier than timing you rolls with all the bait delay attacks, you just need a bunch of STR to use those 30STR greatshields.
Guard counters do as much posture damage as a fully charged R2 of the same weapon, it can bring bosses down for a riposte with just 3-4, as long as you don't take 6+ second breaks between them.

Elden Ring's beginning is great but it falls off hard when you reach Altus Plateau. It's when you realize how much copypasted shit there is, everywhere. I don't think I saw a single new enemy after Leyndell.
The legacy dungeons are too short and too easy.
As for the open world, it's a waste. There's nothing to do in it. The enemies in the open world are the same across the entire game.
Apart from two or three forts, the only side areas are copypasted mines and catacombs with reused enemies and bosses.
That's all there is to do in the open world. Just kill shit. There are no NPC villages with their own little side plot. (except maybe Jarburg but most people will just never even see it).
In fact it really feels like Fromsoft didn't try a single new thing at all.
Every NPC follows the basic Fromsoft template. You find them, you help them, and they either go crazy and you have to kill them or they somehow die offscreen. D's brother killing Fia is an uninspired rehash of Alfred killing Annalise.
The game feels so fricking empty. Not only that, it feels really fricking lazily thrown together.

there is nothing to gain from this, except for bystanders getting a deeper look into the minds of discord trannies.
I feel the open world is too big for it's own good. On a first playthrough it's fine because it's all new. But subsequent playthroughs you realize there's no reason to really explore then environment. You just end up using the wiki to get to shit that's actually worth getting (usually smithing stones, armour and weapons), then all the other locations are left to rot. I much preferred the condensed areas of previous games that had tons of shit in it and didn't take 20+ hours to explore fully. DS1 world is almost perfect. You are free to go pretty much anywhere at the start of the game, and any loaction can have you leave with some cool shit that will make your playthrough more enjoyable. Want to get a 15+ weapon before Anor Londo? You can do that. Want to get some cool spells or armour? Just go here, it won't take anytime at all. In Elden Ring however I would wander around in pretty, yet empty, world for 15+ hours before finding an actually interesting piece of equipment or NPC that makes my exploration feel worthwhile. The world in Elden Ring ends up feeling bland and lifeless once you realize there's nothing really in it and you're just bumbling from one item pickup to the next. The game can almost feel overwhelming on subsequent playthroughs because you look at the map and think - 'I have to do ALL of this AGAIN?'.
TL:DR - Elden Rings map is too large and empty. The previous games had better maps because it didn't take hours to get to something interesting and worthwhile.

I'm currently replying it with a couple of friends in seamless coop, and getting some of the things I want early had me running around for about 10-20 hours before I actually started to play the game. with a smaller map, all of this could have been reduced to maybe 5 hours or less.
