when you think about it bloodborne is actually very linear, it just has a lot of optional side areas that are all self contained. iirc the only real big moment where you loop back to a previous area is the forbidden woods stair

The environmental storytelling and overall lore is what saved BB IMO.
It's the same reason why it'll never get a sequel. They can't remake that magic again, not when so much of it was reliant on the "oh it was Lovecraftian ayys all along" twist.
The evolution from Victorian theme werewolf shit to eldritch horror is one of absolute best gradual tonal shifts I've ever seen in any video game ever.
Sequel or not, doesn't matter to me. I just want fromsoft to bring back trick weapons.

I just finished it yesterday and you're right. I feel like this game only got such high praise from people that were either new to the series or had their expectations lowered by Dark Souls 2.
