Elden Ring is a masterclass in RPG game design

Elden Ring should be a case study for ARPG developers needing inspiration on how to design gear and create and incentivize build variety.

There's several carefully planned ranges for stats allocation clearly designed to give the maximum variety.

Take as weapons Ruin's Greatsword, Starscourge Greatswords, Rosus' Axe, Fallingstar Beast Jaw and Alabaster Lord's Sword. Those weapons have largely physical damage and heavy focus on Strength scaling (with some like Fallingstar being equally versatile with dexterity scaling). All those weapons are Strength weapons with an investment of 15 to 20 Intelligence despite scaling worse with Intelligence. This forced investment incentivizes the player to use, alongside the Ashes of War of these weapons, alternative spells like those without Intelligence scaling but fixed values and various buffs, for example Night's Maiden Mist, Terra Magica or Frozen Armament.
This, makes a Strength build with low Intelligence investement completely different from Intelligence builds, or a build that invests more in Intelligence and less in Strength (for which there could be far better spells and different weapons like Meteoric Ore Blade, Onyx Lord's Greatsword, Royal Greatsword, Loretta War Sickle,...) using more advanced sorceries.

Instead of a purely vertical progression with gear and stuff that inevitably gets forgotten the game can incorporate a system of restriction and tradeoffs that gives it a lot of replay value.

Good point, OP. It also helps that the number of spell slots is not tied to a stat this time around.

      >From a marketing perspective, Demon’s Souls is a project that should have never been initiated. But I have a feeling now that if you’re solid in your ideas, design and process... you can succeed. I hope that Demon’s Souls has become evidence that an original title, one with a very different approach to the norm, can receive recognition and success. I want to believe this game

      >For game director Hidetaka Miyazaki, the interest was shared. “I’d worked exclusively on Armored Core titles in my role at FROM Software”, he explains. “But I’d always wanted to make a dark fantasy game that drew on the Fighting Fantasy series of books. The Demon’s Souls project was that opening that I’d always been waiting for”. But while Demon’s Souls is heavily influenced by fantasy clichés, in play it appears

      >Miyazaki: When designing the bosses, I made sure that they would be varied and exciting. I prepared different gameplay and strategies for each one so that players didn’t get tired of the same fight every time. We wanted to surprise players and encourage them to figure out different tactics, to think on their feet.

      >Miyazaki-san explained that such an approach to level design has always been his preference, and he prefers players to “climb” into areas and experience a form of verticality when moving from area to area. And, the lack of loading screens certainly helps by keeping the player immersed.

      >Miyazaki: I’m just an employee of the development company, so I can’t directly answer whether there’ll be a sequel to Demon’s Souls. With that said, my personal opinion is that we learned a lot during the development of Demon’s Souls, and there were a lot of things that we couldn’t do this first time, so I’d welcome the chance to create an even better game in the same style if the opportunity arises.

I just wish they had a different system for allocating spell slots. It's annoying to have to press the up arrow to flip to the spell you want.

i really doubt, its just to limit certain weapons to late game when you can start dumping on secondary stats. the overall from magic is just bigger sizes on projectiles, and shit like terra magica is really situational

      >and shit like terra magica is really situational
      how?
      >when you can start dumping on secondary stats.
You can only start dumping on secondary stats when you use weapons with split scaling
      >the overall from magic is just bigger sizes on projectiles
Yeah like Full Moon and Primeval Sorcery, right

Because they provide area denial, homing in, various charged and delayed spells
          >terra is only useful with setup + comet, and possibly something that aggros in the meanwhile
Nah, you are just completely clueless
Terra Magica with Dragon spells or Int weapons Ashes of War like Fallingstar Beast Jaw is insane

Which of those weapons allows coating?

      none

      Anonymous

Any other Strength weapon. You could coat a Nightrider Glaive and have cold on a long reaching strength weapon

        Anonymous

I mean ig that's useful but at that point I'd just make it the frost stick with the freezing ash then switch it out after it procs so I do more damage with the weapon I'm upgrading. Outside of bosses many of those weapons have a range with both size and the ash, starscrouge greatswords are already built to be super versatile because of it.

      Anonymous

None, but all those weapons have D scaling in Intelligence. Frozen Armament is a buff that requires no stat and low requirement so you just put it on any Strength weapon and can finally have cold without split scaling

        Anonymous

I thought OP's point was the synergy with one weapon and the spells that each build gives. I rarely ever use a side arm outside of PvP because if I need to kill a boss, chances are I can do it just fine with the main weapon and the only use for a side-arm would be for the ash (commander's standard), riposte (daggers), or to build up a status (as I assume would be the case here). Last time I did dex/fai Vykes lightning bolt on a greataxe and managed to get a build where I light-roll whenever the buff is active, but to do that I couldn't carry any other weapon and besides buffs, I had no real use for incantations in the late game since at 23 faith, it just felt too situational outside of Honed Bolt when I was arc'd.

          Anonymous

The point is that Frozen Armament is useless in an hybrid Strength/Intelligence build because Cold infusion are better when you have Intelligence for scaling, but Frozen Armament can add it without changing your scaling or having to use grease.
There's also other spells to use that you would never use in Intelligence builds with highter Int than 20 but that are worth slotting.
Similarly for those Two Finger Incantations that don't scale with Faith

    >incentivize build variety
    >Everyone spams the same 4 weapon arts though
Elden ring would have been a masterpiece if it was cut in half. It overstays its welcome and ends up looping back to to being shit when every build homogenizes into the same 4 arts

      Anonymous

if you're talking about pvp, it's because a few weapon arts are just clearly superior.

      They either
      1. come out really fast like [moonveil], which makes it hard to consistently dodge when somebody is playing on shit net.
      2. have a massive aoe like [wave of piss, wave of darkness, blasphemous blade] that are hard to roll in tight spaces
      3. true combo people with low poise [flaming strike, spinning strike, stormcaller]

        Anonymous

Pvp just makes it takes the problem and pushes it to 11. There are alot of weapons/builds that are left in the dust and become unviable once enemies begin getting bloated HP, even while maxed out.

        You didn't play the game

He's saying that even if you invest the bare minimum in int/fai to wield a weapon, there are useful spells and incantations that work very well and aren't underpowered.
Flame Grant Me Strength is probably the best example of this. You invest 16 faith to use the magma blade, you can pair that with FGMS and get a great buff to your damage that can last the entire game. It's a pretty simple premise, really. Basically useful spells that don't scale. He also mentions how higher-int/fai builds will ignore some of the earlier spells.
ironically outside of ER, i think bloodborne did this best though it was too limited in scope
