Yeah bro GOTY didn't have that feature.

Oh wait, it did. The game reacts to everything the player does, be it good or bad. Meanwhile Bethesda treats the player like a toddler, constantly saying "No, no, no, you can't do that!" if the player tries to shoot anyone he doesn't like or complete an objective in an unconventional way.

People want depth and choice in their RPGs. BG3's success proves it, and more importantly, it proves Bethesda's "streamline and simply" philosophy totally fricking out of touch. The only reason Bethesda's 'RPGs' have been successful before is due to their atmosphere -- their art design, music and worldbuilding -- and the fact they've been working with pre-existing franchises. Starfield is the first time in memory BGS has made their own game off their own back, their own lore and story, everything done by Todd and his lackeys, and it's their most poorly recieved game to date.

If that doesn't get through your shill skull that Starfield is dogshit, nothing will.

No, it's not an open world RPG, but the freedom it does give you has massive depth and complexity. The game accounts for your actions and responds logically and consistently.

Bethesda freedom is "Do you want to shoot this raider with a pistol or with a rifle?" or "Do you want to do Randomised Fetch Quest A first, or Randomised Fetch Quest B first?" It's freedom in its most meaningless sense and, judging by Starfield's awful critical reception, people aren't being fooled by it anymore.

        >Nothing this lazy should've been made.
the most baffling thing is that apparently it was "ready" for release 2 or so years ago and microsoft told them to finish it. game feels unfinished now so god only knows what it was like back then

Why did it fail this bad though?
Was it rushed? Or is it the engine? Poojeet devs?

        everything.
the engine's limitations make it feel like you're playing a game from 15 years ago like homie you can't even have a fully open town so you have loading screens for entering shops. and then they sneak in more unskippable cut scenes when they are obviously pseudo loading screens because the engine sucks
the quest design makes it feel like you're playing a game from 15 years ago. go talk to someone, he tells you to go do something, you go do something (99% of the time you just go shoot something for 5 minutes) and then you go back to the main guy (homie we have space travel can't i just email you)
the combat is shit. you can just literally stand still and shoot till you win.
systems in the game are moronic like base building is half assed and crafting is useless when the game shits new, better gear on you.
the writing sucks. the characters are all the same.
the only positive i will say about this game is that there are THREE good missions: getting chased by the xenomorph; exploring the prison in the pirate quest; the snake people embassy mission. someone accidentally designed those well

          >the engine's limitations
          its not the engine
its the people using the engine forgetting what the engine can do and leaving shit out of the game
fricking skyrim and fallout had npcs react when you attacked/shot gusn around them and they just dont in starfield.
theres a bunch of shit that the garbage engine should be able to do and has done in previous games that they just left out.

It's too fricking old.

It makes the game seize up and crash constantly. There's plenty you can "do" in the creative engine, it doesn't mean shit if the game can't handle it for more than four seconds.

Any engine can only be as good as the programmer using it.

Fricking Fallout 76 has dismemberment and visual damage to enemies you hit. I'm not asking for the character to be missing an arm, but even some specks of blood on her would be something.

There are so many problems with Starfield, but they couldn't even manage something they've been doing since Oblivion. Even in a specific, dramatic scene where your entire focus is on the character. It's actually baffling how lazy it is.

It took like eight years to make. It certainly wasn't rushed.

The sad truth is just that Bethesda is ran by incompetent, boring boomers. Their experience of the world revolves around driving from their insulated suburban homes to the office, engaging in petty, dry office politics, and driving back home to their nagging wife. No wonder the game reflects that existence perfectly.

I could have forgiven them basically everything bad in the gameplay if only the setting itself was interesting. Too bad the setting of starfield is utterly fricking boring and I got tired of playing the game within like a week. The ship building is what intrigued me the most about the game and it kept me engaged for a while but after building my ultimate battleship and assaulting the crimson fleet space station, destroying their fleet there, only to realize that I can't destroy the space station itself, I finally got fed up and dropped the game

people keep saying its the engine's fault but its not
they could've done well enough with the engine. The problem is poor writing and poor game design. Its like the game was made by 12 different teams who never communicated with each other once, and some butthole just shoddily glued it all together come launch time.
if they had just put an ounce of love into it, it would be a nice game

      Anonymous

Western developers think beauty is discriminatory or something

      Anonymous

Because they didn't balance the scales on random character generation. For example, there's like a dozen variations of old man wrinkles, and only one option (no wrinkles) is youthful. If you use pure balanced randomization then only 1 in 12 characters will be young, which I think is what they did. You'd need to balance the odds to favor the young to get an even spread of old and young, and I don't think they thought of that.

Uncanny valley effect of "high-tier" animation, deliberate uglification due to ideology and shit tier designers.

Unironically, if they had a lore reason for the entire human race being 90% morlocks and acknowledged it, it would have been accepted. Just handwave it as dysgenics caused by tech development, culture of hideousness, MC being a porn-brained coomer who is used to hyperreality or genetic drift caused by humans spreading out, and it would have served as a cool story point. Any one of those would have been fine to expand upon, but its instead treated as "WHY DO YOU CARE?! ALL FORMS ARE BEAUTIFUL!!!!".

A side-story on why there are few beautiful models among the masses of moronic genetic detritus would have been interesting, especially if you factor in the spaceship that arrives 200+ years later and would not be a masquerade of morons.

But no, its NASApunk. Shit is ugly, and you are a bigot if you notice.

At this point, it seems like using the same engine is more work (dollars wasted in wrangling it around and making it work, bugfixes, etc) than just making a new one would be.

      Completely throw out Creation Engine.
Making a new engine just so it can look and do on par with other commercial engines while running slightly worse or slightly better is a waste of time and outsourcing.
Id fricked themselves with IdTech69 or whatever iteration of DooM Eternal is where all that engine can do is make an ADHD shooter. Nobody wants to use anything IdTech related even in Bethesda's other teams except Machine Games which has made nothing but shooters.
Force them to give up on modders and modding support. Modders do not make money. Paid mods are a complete fricking failure as both mods and micro-dlc especially when they are not even priced well.
Remove Emil and Todd from the coporate structure entirely. They will no longer give any direct input to any project, they will act as the middle man between BGS and MS and nothing more.
