The latest pokemon games had a glitch where you'd regularly be able to see under the land and see that it's an empty void. Is that the case under the land for every game? Yes. Does that mean it's okay to have errors that break the illusion in the game? No. Every game uses illusions, but the point is to implement them in a way that they're not easily broken.
If it's optimized to the point where an in-game mechanic will reveal the illusion, you shouldn't optimize that way. This would be easily fixed if the game was designed to move weather effects from the player to the camera's vantage point.
Dude having a rain effect over the entire fricking planet would be crazy taxxing for no benefit whatsoever. What the frick are you failing to understand here?
I was going to agree with you that this is just resource management but then I noticed it said 'player'. not the fricking camera. and that the screenshot is via the in-game free camera exposing this. like if this was about optimization why is it not just a fricking camera overlay or some shit why the hell would the rain be a isolated effect floating directly around the player. they can't even be lazy in a way that makes sense
Let me preface this by saying I am a 40 year old gamer whos been playing video games since the 80's starting with the original GameBoy. I've never touched a Bethesda game before this one as I am a super space nerd and this game got me to purchase a Series X just to play it. Boy, do I feel justified with my purchase!
This game is freakin amazing, and IM STILL ON KREET! Let me tell you guys, I landed and got out my ship, first of all this frickin game is GORGEOUS, I look and saw the little blue way point marker I'm supposed to follow, but then I look around again and see all these little black and white markers as well. I'm a very curious person and I like to be thourough so I said let me run over and see what these places are about. Im running, I'm exploring, I'm mining materials, I'm scanning flora and fauna, even fighting some little aggressive fauna and extracting their materials. The whole time I'm just a happy little space cadet hopping around what I thought was a barren planet.
I truly do not understand the negativity towards this game. It's like the people who dislike it are the ones who expected to play this game like it was a job or real life. I've always said the hardest part of a game developer's job is its own community and some of these players are either delusional or just entitled. The demands and expectations I'm seeing on just this sub reddit alone are disturbing. People don't want to play games to have fun anymore, they just want to point out all the flaws and mistakes. These people feel like devs owe them something
This. For all the things to give the game shit about, this isn't it. It's not like soil will erode unevenly based on where the player is as a result. It's purely for perception, so why not?
fpbp, starfield is shit but this is just sensible, no need to spawn a purely visual effect further away than it could realistically be seen
but they probably should have done something for this freecam photo mode to allow players to take the perfect rainy screenshot they want without having to worry as much about their character position
No shit they should have done something better with the free cam mode. You’re giving them another pass for not giving a shit about the details and shipping out half baked barely implemented ideas.
I am not sure how this technique is foreign to people. Please tell me whoever posted that was just stating a fact or being BTFO on whatever platform it was posted. I would love to see their damage control.
Its the fact they include a photo mode that exposes the seams of the game thats moronic. Don’t include a photo mode if your photos are going to look like programer jank.
What's up with all the Pajeets defending shit like this? There are tons of better looking games with functional rain that are more optimized than this piece of trash game.
>optimize
Rain in open world games implemented this way always look like complete ass. There's a reason why competently made games stopped doing that more than a decade ago.
>starfield >optimized
lmaooooooooo >optimization trick can be revealed through in-game tools
thats just bad design, your immersive sim shouldnt have immersion breaking optimizations
The rain is moving at the same speed forward as a plane? Are you fricking moronic? You realize the plane isn't just going up and down, you brain-broken frickwit.
Is this the biggest flop of the 2020s? Absolutely no one seems to give even a small shit. Barely anything else came out this month because nobody wanted to compete with this shit. Games got pushed back because of this.
Yes. Coming out in the same period as Starfield, MK1, Cyberpunk Phantom Liberty, From Software's Mech game, and From Software clone Lies of P is suicide.
Doubt it, a lot of people are playing it, even though everyone is shitting on it. D4 might be a bigger 'flop' since absolutely no one even cares to mention that game just a few months after release
Starfield was a success for a new game if you compare it with Cyberpunk for example
Cyberpunk crashed CD projekt, millions of refunds, everyone forget about the game 1-2 weeks after launch
Before Cyberpunk launch, CD projekt was worth 10 billion on the market and crashed to 1.8 the lowest
It’s definitely the biggest flop relative to its budget. Cyberpunk is one of the best selling games of the decade despite the disastrous launch. Diablo 4 is dead now but it has Blizzard’s biggest launch ever. Starfield underperformed right out of the gate and no one cares about it.
this is a very bad year for games. >Diablo 4 is a total fricking disaster >Baldurs Gate 3 was the most pathetic, cringe reddit dating sim i have ever seen >Armored Core 6 is a silly mobile game >Starfield is using a 20 year old engine that demands triple stacked 4090 to work properly

wait, they want me to get a SSD for this shit? fricking really? triple AAA games like MW and RDR looked far better than this shit and never needed a SSD
what kind of fricked up incompetence is this
if a game doesn't look better than RDR then it doesn't need a fricking SSD simple as
The Witcher 3, released 8 fricking years ago (and being released allegedly with a "graphics downgrade") looked better than this embarassment of a game that is starfield.
Not him but I've only ever seen one other game do this and it's Witcher 3. Every other ties it to the camera position, at least when activating photo mode. It looks jarring otherwise.
But that small difference is what fricks up Starfield's implementation. It's the same technique sure but because they tied it to the player model in a game that has photo mode, it's ridiculously easy to break the effect.
Millenial developers are a fricking embarrassment.
Granted, the blame lies with the industry, all the competent devs are working in tech giants making six figure salaries with far less stress than the 50k/year college grad chasing his dreams.
Can't wait to see zoomers devolve the industry further
all ground textures are given an overlay where black dots are randomly copied onto it. notice none of the other objects on the ground are affected by the water. you can imagine the shader code to be something like
(every second: copy grey dot with 70% opacity onto completely transparent texture 10 times
then, copy texture onto concrete)
that's a simple explanation, anyways.
>Doing an embedded systems school project >Check for ideas online >All the projects comments sections are filled with pajeets asking for help with their problems
It really is true
Almost every game ties it to the camera, not the player model, precisely so players can't see things like this. Care to explain why most other developers are stupid and only Bethesda knows how to do it right?
>Almost every game ties it to the camera, not the player model, precisely so players can't see things like this.
This is in frozen time Photo Mode where the camera was originally at/near the player and then was pulled much further away than is possible in any part of gameplay. Rain isn't actively falling since time is frozen so we have no idea where it would fall if it could in this situation. For all we know it is in fact based on the camera.
They could have made the entire frozen rain effect follow the camera around in Photo Mode, I guess, though that would still be weird since it'd just be this static effect plastered to the screen that would look jarring when moving it. But at least that would be better for taking photos than seeing the rain radius like this. Maybe an option to disable or enable rain alongside all the other filters would be good too. But out of all the problems with Starfield worth caring about, improving Photo Mode in rain has got to be near the bottom of the list if it even makes the cut.
>all these dumbasses thinking the complaint is that the rain is small and not that it's tied to the player model instead of the camera.
No, this isn't "what every game does". Every game does do tricks SIMILAR to this for rain BUT they tie it to the camera so that you can't break the illusion. Go try the photo mode in Death Stranding and see if you get something like this.
>Pajeets pretending like this is perfectly normal when there are hundreds of games with freecam or photo mode where you can pause the game and zoom into individual rain drops in the distance
Guess what bro, that's an illusion too. Just one that's less easy to uncover. I'm tired of people that know nothing about game development shitting on things like this when practically everything about games is an illusion.
>It's an illusion that there's a raindrop far away from the player even though you're claiming all raindrops in modern games occur only in a moving radius around the camera
Ok. No simulated rain effect ever fell in a video game without it being a camera trick, you're right.
Explain why it's better than tying it to the camera, please. That's the standard method and it results in photo modes working flawlessly without breaking the effect. Very curious to hear about why Bethesda's implementation is smarter than the standard one.
Photo Mode is a mode within the game, dumbass. It's not some mod, it's an intended method of playing the game and it completely breaks when it's raining.
Photo mode does not normally break the rain effect in games because it's usually tied to the camera, not the player model. Therefore this is not standard.
>NOOOOOOOO YOU NEED TO CALCULATE PHYSICS FOR EACH RAINDROP INDIVIDUALLY, WHAT IS THIS THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE THE NEXT GEN GAME, I CAN'T POSSIBLY PLAY THIS, THIS GAME IS SUCH A FLOP, IM GOING BACK TO FORTNITE
I didn't even play starfield, but holy fricking shit, people like this are braindead
Every game does it and most do it in a way that the player never will be able to notice unless they mod the game in some way. That's the issue with Starfield, that they did it in such a dumb way that simply activating photo mode breaks the illusion.
Just one tied to the camera(at least when in photo mode) like basically every other game. Photo modes have been a thing for a while now and they don't usually break the rain effect.
They still don't even have rainwater running down the surface of objects, or dripping off edges/eaves/overhangs, or have vertical surfaces liie people's heads/shoulders with a halo of water splashing off the surface, they don't even occlude the shiny specular 'wetness' filter that fades in when it rains so that covered surfaces aren't wet.
BoTW did all of these things in 2017 using massively underclocked 2013 mobile hardware.
>Needlessly take up resources
If you're playing a game with a fixed amount of camera, you only realistically need to render the amount of rain visible to the player. Wasting resources because someone might hack the camera is pointless. Games arent reality, and you only need enough to keep the player in a false sense of belief, not actually try to replicate reality autistically
Having the rain as a instance around the player is actually the autistic hardware hungry version.
Most devs would just apply a shader and particles from camera pov
It hit me that they totally removed all gore and blood, it makes the shooting feel worse than fallout 4 honestly. There's good feedback to the player when your shot blows somebody's head off but starfield is just so limp and sanitized
Sure hope they left the code for it in, so people could add it back in. They definitely kept limb condition in, so maybe they left in dismember related code.
Games sanitized to shit besides the existence of recreational drugs, and I think the drugs might have been part of the problem already putting them on thin ice with ratings boards, so maybe they will push it further in the DLC
well of course. it’s part of wokeism. every woman npc with any dialogue is an essential NPC and there’s no gore so you can’t chop off women limbs or even kill them at all. also you can’t steal their armor to strip women to underwear like in previous bethesda games
That's literally true for like 90% of the games out there. Most just have the mental capacity to center it on the camera, not on the player model.
Not that I'm excusing it, it's moronic as shit, but yeah, a massive amount of devs do this. That's what happens when you hire based on race and political views instead of credentials.
This is some sort of visual bug. Had the same rain "box" around my guy when I was trying to get a picture of my ship on the NA space dock. on a bright sunny day @ noon, mind you. Restarting game/savefile fixes that issue btw.
I remember when fricking morons complained about this with the GTA remasters too. Rain is a particle system, it's a bunch of polygons falling from the sky. You know what a game doesn't need? More polygons, especially thousands of them literally RAINING from the sky. Pretty much every game makes it rain around the player, seeing that Starfield is also 3rd person the particles wouldn't be tied to the camera itself.
I will never understand why bethesda didn't include proper weather effects in starfield. Fallout 4's radstorms looked great. Whats wrong with Bethesda?
In a game about exploring planets one would imagine the possibilities of having dynamic weather. Imagine a sulfur storm approaching. Or simply a tornado, or mist. Yet they didn't take the chance to do it.
I was going to give beth a pass on this because I thought it was something to do with forcing a nonstandard fov, but the fact that you can see how this rain effect works in photo mode is actually mind blowingly lazy. Just another “good enough, ship it” moment from the kings of cut corners. Not an ounce of polish in this game.
just like the matrix we live in - it only matters if you notice it. If it's in photo mode, it's an unfortunate bug that needs fixing, but photo mode isn't the core game is it
>rain following character instead of camera is embarrasing >brainlets believe videogame rain is real and present in the entire gameworld
just wait until you find out about rain in movies
That's not rain, that's some annoying graphical bug that only appears in photo mode. First time I had this happen was in the first temple and the second was on the first beach I found, both times there was no rain in sight.
What a dumb emcjanic. Literally you have no reason to use automatic given the fire rate, this shouldn't even be a thing, it should give you stability not damage.
There was some old Need For Speed game for PS2 that did this for it's rain too. From a development perspective it does seem pretty smart as far as optimization goes.
I noticed it immediately but its even worse than expected. The billboard planes of the rain fall at weird inconsistent angles and clip through roofs. It's some of the laziest rain I've ever seen
>devs should optimize games better
>NOOO YOU CAN'T OPTIMIZE IT THAT WAY!!!
OP absolutely BTFO
I haven't played starfield but this only matters if it's noticeable during regular gameplay.
It's not but of course it matters. The illusion is shattered once people discover and spread it.
Maybe if you are autistic lmao. You know video games aren't real right? Does that ruin it for you too?
The latest pokemon games had a glitch where you'd regularly be able to see under the land and see that it's an empty void. Is that the case under the land for every game? Yes. Does that mean it's okay to have errors that break the illusion in the game? No. Every game uses illusions, but the point is to implement them in a way that they're not easily broken.
>y-you're autistic
No, you're just plain moronic
>It's not
You can actually see the rain line moving in front of you during gameplay it looks silly.
You literally can't though, what the shit?
Let me tell you about occlusion culling
How does it feel to be such a homosexual?
its clearly vis in OP shot
NTA but OP shot is not regular gameplay. It's photo mode.
Go easy on thirdworlders. They're going to have a VERY hard month
Thirdworlders are the ones shilling this cancer, ESL.
Bom dia cara
>cloud gaming is going to ubisoft
and nothing of value is lost
So then why do other open world games run better with more detail and better graphics?
Nta but what other open world games do the same thing as Starfield so your loaded question is actually valid?
Baldur's Gate 3
lol
Well? What are you waiting for? Name them.
Literally all of them moronic Black person shill
Idk what the topic is but rdr2 is better
>Idk what the topic is but rdr2 is better
Based moron, also has nothing to do with anything but I like RDR2 better as well.
Did you even read his entire post?
Do you have brain damage?
Do you? Every game, your favorite included, does "tricks" like the OP image to optimise the game. It's not an issue and it doesn't need to be "fixed".
so no, you did not read his post
ahhahahahahhaha bethdrones everyone
i really can't tell if you're an actual moron schizo or if this is a joke
if you can notice it then the effect has failed
Game should have a full planetary water system model and erosion effects.
>would be crazy taxxing
kinda like using 120 thousand triangles for a cube?
Damn if I posted something this embarrasing I would never come back
>smartest slopfield fan
>having a rain effect over the entire fricking planet would be crazy taxxing
Bethesdrones, everyone.
OPs picture is from the game, its revealing the illusion in game
I was going to agree with you that this is just resource management but then I noticed it said 'player'. not the fricking camera. and that the screenshot is via the in-game free camera exposing this. like if this was about optimization why is it not just a fricking camera overlay or some shit why the hell would the rain be a isolated effect floating directly around the player. they can't even be lazy in a way that makes sense
it's not a camera effect because you don't want san andreas remaster rain(look it up)

well considering the game runs like shit even on the best hardware... no you cant optimize it that way
FPBP.
I'm all for smoke and mirrors stuff when it's properly done.
The game runs like shit though, and should have optimized better

About as well as boomers do.
I grew up with the original pooh cartoons
Everyone over 25 would feel very old if they didn't
Man I'm fricking resonating with eeyore now that I think about it
He used to be a joke character for me but god damn, things have changed.
>ynr the rain in GTA:SA's demake
This is actually real life, though. Ever eyeballed falling rain drops? If you're a plane nosediving, then you're falling with the rain.
The plane is moving forward
Thats how rain works in real life moron
Rain falls quicker than that, anon. Did you work on this remake or something?
It doesn't fall quicker, it just isn't as large. You can see the effect happening on real 3rd person footage of jets
The rain is moving at the same speed forward as a plane? Are you fricking moronic? You realize the plane isn't just going up and down, you brain-broken frickwit.

Almost like that was a Cessna in the video and wasn't traveling downward faster than the speed of gravity.
Let's not forget that the rain also moves with camera. It's literally a
situation.
That's all games
Remember when Xbox cucks said Starfield would render the whole game's universe at once?
Fricking gullible idiots

there are bigger flops this year, Starfield didn’t even flop in the first place
I think EA's latest unreal 5 game sold basically nothing
What game?
Immortals of Aveum
and also half the studio got laid off cause how hard it flopped
Michael Kirkbride wrote the lore for that by the way.
Todd wins again.
I asked my zoomer 15yr old cousin if he wanted to play it and he said "it looks mid".
I told him it is but everyone playing it knows that.
Doubt it, a lot of people are playing it, even though everyone is shitting on it. D4 might be a bigger 'flop' since absolutely no one even cares to mention that game just a few months after release

There are so many things that older games do, modern devs should be fricking embarassed.
I was watching a friend play through the old 2004 chronicles of riddick butcher bay game -
The edges of bullet holes glow red then slowly fade to black
Blood splatters on the wall slowly drip and run down the wall
Bethesda must either just have a bunch of people phoning it in or they are full of legitimately terrible and low-IQ diversity hires.
what gayme
Homefront the Revolution
that game sucked ass
Didn't ask.
I don't see the issue, lots of games do something similar to this, like near camera only.
Then why doesn't it apply to the viewport rendered but sticks to the player model.
your trying to appeal to brown teens that have no idea how to program anything
Sounds like you do see the issue. Starfield doesn't do that. It ties it to the character model, allowing for situations like this.
>all these dumbasses thinking the complaint is that the rain is small and not that it's tied to the player model instead of the camera.
No, this isn't "what every game does". Every game does do tricks SIMILAR to this for rain BUT they tie it to the camera so that you can't break the illusion. Go try the photo mode in Death Stranding and see if you get something like this.
Better than the last 3 elder scrolls where the rain comes through the roof of buildings
That's the fricking smartest way of doing rain, moron.
Explain why it's better than tying it to the camera, please. That's the standard method and it results in photo modes working flawlessly without breaking the effect. Very curious to hear about why Bethesda's implementation is smarter than the standard one.
It's their first game with photo mode. Only 8 years in development please be patient.
ERHMAHGAWD MUH EMERSHUN THE GAME IS RUINED NOW
>defending bethesda laziness and incompetence
YOU FRICKING NO TASTE Black folk HAVEN'T CHANGED IN OVER A DECADE
How's about you complain about something that effects playing the game you whiny homosexual.
Photo Mode is a mode within the game, dumbass. It's not some mod, it's an intended method of playing the game and it completely breaks when it's raining.
>Space exploration sucks
>ITS SUPPOSED TO BE A IMMERSIVE RPG YOU SNOY KEKS
>Immersion sucks
>STOP COMPLAINING
Is there anything this game does right?
ITT
>Standard game design norm is bad because uhhh....
moron.
I didn't even play starfield, but holy fricking shit, people like this are braindead
have a nice day homosexual a modded skyrim/fallout 4 has better rain and still has lower recommended specs that sarfield
literally have a nice day the world will be a better place without your excuseisms
they both handle rain in the exact same way fricktard
>yet starfield can't fricking do proper ingame camera mode
Lying shitstain have a nice day
...or you could just tie it to the camera like every other game does. At least do it in photo mode so that it doesn't immediately break the effect.
think its actually a good idea
but the player should never ever be able to notice it
Every game does it and most do it in a way that the player never will be able to notice unless they mod the game in some way. That's the issue with Starfield, that they did it in such a dumb way that simply activating photo mode breaks the illusion.
Did they want it as a postprocess effect?
Just one tied to the camera(at least when in photo mode) like basically every other game. Photo modes have been a thing for a while now and they don't usually break the rain effect.
WHOOOP
WHOOOOOP
HERE COMES THE GOTY!!!!!!!!
Rebjish Howard is fricking god of gaming!!!!!!!!!
That's how most games do it.
How is this news article worthy?
This will never end so long as they insist on using that lumbering shitheap of an engine held together by tape and glue
Okay and?
Really makes you appreciate games like Ghosts of Tsushima where devs actually cared to make rain feel amazing.
Bethesda's engine is critically outdated and gets spanked by old ass games, it's ridiculous at this point.
MGSV rain is kino because the rain drops are actually rendered. You can see this if you eat a slow mo pill, or activate reflex mode.
GUYS DID YOU KNOW THAT IN OPEN WORLD GAMES THE ENTIRE WORLD IS NOT RENDERED BUT ONLY THE PARTS OF THE WORLD YOU HAVE VISION OF
OMG DEVS ARE SO LAZY!!!!!
They WHAT
Fricking why
probably a directive from microsoft to avoid the game being cut or banned from sale in some countries due to excessive gore
I gotta say Starfield is really doooming me out. 8 years since fallout 4 and it kind of mogs starfield? Fallout 4 was shit
I don't know whether to blame todd or microsoft for how it turned out
Games sanitized to shit besides the existence of recreational drugs, and I think the drugs might have been part of the problem already putting them on thin ice with ratings boards, so maybe they will push it further in the DLC
well of course. it’s part of wokeism. every woman npc with any dialogue is an essential NPC and there’s no gore so you can’t chop off women limbs or even kill them at all. also you can’t steal their armor to strip women to underwear like in previous bethesda games
I mean I would say that's a good thing but you would think they would extend it for photo mode
That's literally true for like 90% of the games out there. Most just have the mental capacity to center it on the camera, not on the player model.
Not that I'm excusing it, it's moronic as shit, but yeah, a massive amount of devs do this. That's what happens when you hire based on race and political views instead of credentials.
It's clever if you couldn't notice it normally.
How do you know it's not like that in real life?
This is some sort of visual bug. Had the same rain "box" around my guy when I was trying to get a picture of my ship on the NA space dock. on a bright sunny day @ noon, mind you. Restarting game/savefile fixes that issue btw.
>in literally every game every, things only exist at all in a small area around the player
This is literally how video games work. what?
WOOOOOW
next you tell me the engine will only render what the player currently sees
OH MY GOD
morrowind rain happens on the entire loaded cell
so does oblvion's
so does skyrim's
and what is the advantage of that?
>s-so what if it works in 20 year old games? it doesn't matter now lol cope
grab that goalpost and get the frick out homosexual
its working worse in 20 year old games
I remember when fricking morons complained about this with the GTA remasters too. Rain is a particle system, it's a bunch of polygons falling from the sky. You know what a game doesn't need? More polygons, especially thousands of them literally RAINING from the sky. Pretty much every game makes it rain around the player, seeing that Starfield is also 3rd person the particles wouldn't be tied to the camera itself.
I will never understand why bethesda didn't include proper weather effects in starfield. Fallout 4's radstorms looked great. Whats wrong with Bethesda?
absolutely nothing wrong with this. but they should fake it and expand the circle in photo mode.
>in starfield
and where not?
In every game rain just screen effect and some texture effects on surface
If Bethesda actually made proper particle rain effect, its actually step forward
I could swear skyrim had rain effect tied to the camera, it really does feel like they regressed in some areas
sometimes I feel that way too
It's all just a trick, Anon.
wait until OP find out about video related, his world will crash around him
Now imagine you switched camera angle to see behind and seen all the mixing objects.
Thats fine so long as you don’t include a bare bones camera mode that exposes such things in the game if that how it needs to be done.
Im done
You guys are true fricking morons, and you are destroying the very things you claim to love
just like the matrix we live in - it only matters if you notice it. If it's in photo mode, it's an unfortunate bug that needs fixing, but photo mode isn't the core game is it
>shitshills contract runs out in 5 days
we're almost there guys
Contract has ben extend until end of year sir
>we want the Tombstone audience
?si=IQMJHX0EMn8pnhXl&t=162
This is the case for the majority of games. There's still a hundred reasons to shit on Starfield but this isn't one of them.
>rain following character instead of camera is embarrasing
>brainlets believe videogame rain is real and present in the entire gameworld
just wait until you find out about rain in movies
You mean this is fake rain?
Soul
pajeets are secretly the masters of kino
>photo mode has worst visuals than a making off
What's the point then?
That's not rain, that's some annoying graphical bug that only appears in photo mode. First time I had this happen was in the first temple and the second was on the first beach I found, both times there was no rain in sight.
Starfield has literally zero systemic complexity. Do you think rain falling outside of your vision cone would have any gameplay relevance?
>Turn weapon semi auto
>deals triple damage
How
>"game balance"
What a dumb emcjanic. Literally you have no reason to use automatic given the fire rate, this shouldn't even be a thing, it should give you stability not damage.
Pajeets designed this and it shows.
Starfield is FUN. Thats all I care about. It will be god tier with mods. People who complain about graphics are the worse
wait till OP hears about polygons and textures. the mentally ill homosexual might just kill itself and get the world rid of it.
Its getting patched out. This is a non issue
>no new IP
good evening sir
>the planet only exists in a small area around the player
fixed
What an embarrassment for Microsoft and Bethesda. I knew everything that Microsoft buys dies. Microsoft is the cemetery IPs and studios go to die.
