What's a design document for when the game turns out to be shit anyway?
Just because you have an instruction on how to build a bedframe doesn't mean you won't somehow frick it up
a good design document almost certainly didn't mention on how to handle essential npc in a innovative way for a modern role-playing game in after decade of computer RPG, but perhaps that innovation was already renowned by rpgs in late 90s, well I hate to say it, you know, Morrowind. But before Morrowind, there is Ultima 1-7..
youtubers and their golems trying to say how game development works is just so embarrassing, game design docs are simply not a thing that actual gamedevs take seriously at all, it's an ideaguy construct
listening to actual game developers and being one, GDD shit basically never comes up and when it does it's to poke fun at the fact that it didn't represent the game at all, such as doom
He's trying to do a really awkward gotcha by trying to claim some specific bits of documentation made him win some moronic internet feud, which obviously has nothing to do with the normalgay idea of what a GDD is. People like him really need to get off twitter.
In the first video he is mentioning business pitches that none of the developers will ever refer to while developing, and in the second one he is mentioning Word to use for stuff like Workflowy and Obsidian which I also personally use to keep track of ideas and to-dos and it isn't even close to a GDD. The funniest thing is how he acts like his team members are moronic for supposedly not even hearing about such a concept as if they are doing things wrong and can't fathom the idea that they have their own project management tools such as Trello and Github Projects which are far more effective for someone doing actual hard work with other teammates instead of writing down ideas, what an egocentric moron.
Both of those ARE game design documents. The business pitch is quite literally a game design document because it documents the design of the game. And from the pitch you create sub-documents for developers and designers on implementation details.
He himself said the people he worked with don't know what those things are (read: they don't care about it because it doesn't fit their needs, hierarchal lists are worthless if you have any sort of gamedev role that requires doing actual work instead of conceptualizing since it will quickly become an unmanageable mess and a kanban board is much more appropriate), and he also made it clear how little it means for other people near the end of the video.
I have yet to see a single sakurai video where I learned anything other than "directors have no idea how production work works and they vastly overestimate their own value". Also his theatrical hand gestures bug the shit out of me.
Dunno, seems bullshit to me.
We know a lot of studios worldwide worked on this, so let's say ship building was contracted to X studio. X studio was probably told >ship build works with parts >said parts connect into each other with fixed points >a ship needs some parts to be ready to fly, other like cargo are optional
Etc etc, there must be a request order of features and that's your documentation. No docs would be something like "ehi build a modular ship building system like gummiship from kingdom hearts, see you in six months"
No the ship building would be handled by a team that would meet with Todd every so often and they would send request to other teams for art assets to work with
doesn't matter. maybe he was a good creative back when he got it, but people who got tattoos when young hit major midlife crises when they get older. you can see it with emil who has been having break downs on twitter because starfield has shown objectively that he doesn't have the juice anymore (assuming he ever did even)
There's a talk that Emil had like 8 years ago, I think it's still up on youtube, where he talks about how they design and write games. He mentioned that they do not use design documents.
people trying to give incompetent hack devs an out when the problem with starfield is the devs are shit and they keep trying to make their ancient engine do dumb shit
>Emil himself says he doesn't uses Design Documents >morons like

Some YouTube grifter taking advantage of the holidays and angry, lonely people aka Ganker
claim it's because some e-celeb is spreading rumors about their favorite game
Did the document say: >make settlements a turbo half-assed factorio clone instead of comfy fallout 4 settlement building with more depth and improvements
Honestly, it doesn't even deserve to be called a factorio clone, but here we are.
It's in their best interest to pretend they just winged it, because the alternative is that after decades of honing their skills and processes, and being meticulously professional, Starfield was the result.
Well, Hines was already sacked and the only thing that is saving Emil's head is that he is Todd's bestie.
Once Todd retires he wont last a week in the job
He was right about everything. You can shit the most putrid, half-baked game and as long as you wrap it in a nice and marketable wrapper gamers would eat it happily, just like yearly COD and FIFA
>need to justify yourself to internet strangers or fish for any form of validation
that's just sad, it's even more sad when he have decades of experience
that's just a diplay of weakness
does he think this invalidates the criticism of his game? if anything, not having docs was at least an excuse for why some aspects turned out so bad. now he doesn't have the excuse and it's clear the story/quests/world building just suck because he's a bad writer
Everything about Emil makes sense when you realize that he used to be a fat new england ginger nerd who kept his mouth shut most of his life who then lost alot of weight and gained a senior role at a notable studio.
emil! people aren't hating on you for not having design documentation! they're hating on you because your writing sucks, and they're using every excuse they can to shit on you! and you deserve it!
Can I see it?
No.
Well Emil, you are an odd fellow. But I must admit, you Star a good Field.

What's a design document for when the game turns out to be shit anyway?
Just because you have an instruction on how to build a bedframe doesn't mean you won't somehow frick it up
yeah, but without they slightest idea of how to build a bedframe you will probably fail 20 times before you build a working one
I have never built a bedframe before but I'm sure if I tried it would work fine. might be a little ugly and overly reinforced but it'd be solid
and now build the eiffel tower instead of a bedframe

How do you know this?
common sense. someone on youtube saying something equels to anon saying his uncle works at nintendo
listening to actual game developers and being one, GDD shit basically never comes up and when it does it's to poke fun at the fact that it didn't represent the game at all, such as doom
well Emil is insisting he has one, so what's your next move here?

seething programmercel

idk you absolutely do need a plan for what your game is going to be, starfield feels like they just winged it in so many areas
Emil is literally an idea guy though
Dunno, seems bullshit to me.
We know a lot of studios worldwide worked on this, so let's say ship building was contracted to X studio. X studio was probably told

There are few things more moronic than a middle aged white collar man with a big ass ugly tattoo
No wonder his writing is unfiltered cow piss
He probably got the tattoo 20+ years ago, before you were born. But sure THAT'S why his writing is bad.
Tattoo looked fresh and I was right.
And yes, tattoos are always a big red flag about lack of taste
doesn't matter. maybe he was a good creative back when he got it, but people who got tattoos when young hit major midlife crises when they get older. you can see it with emil who has been having break downs on twitter because starfield has shown objectively that he doesn't have the juice anymore (assuming he ever did even)
Only homosexuals and women take selfies of themselves drinking from a mug.
Why are people like this so damn performative?
People really got under his skin when they criticized him for being a shit writer and a worse lead dev.
ok that's even worse, that means starfield is shit for no reason other than incompetence. how the frick are they justifying this to microsoft.
So why were people trying to saying the game had no design document? Where did that even come from?
Some YouTube grifter taking advantage of the holidays and angry, lonely people aka Ganker

Dude is falling apart, lmao. Todd should fire him before he goes postal in their offices.
Also that's a very gay cup
He is still standing, even after that big wave of hatred the dude still strong.
Wait, I just realized, if he's talking about "catching up on design documentation"...is he talking about Elder Scrolls 6?
yes, which is a bad thing because he will ruin it
You only have yourself to blame if you still play bethslop
>everyone makes fun of the fact the game has no direction
>morons bait that it doesn't matter
what a boring fricking thread
Wait so it was this bad DESPITE having a "design document"?
Yeah, it only makes things look worse innit?
Emil has mentality of a 5 y.o.
He should make a game with Kojima.
Theyll go along fabulously
Ganker still mad that MGSV wasn't a movie? lmao
This is what happens when your company is filled with people due to nepotism.
I don't want to plap plap Emil though
He's just a child.
Man he's upset
He knows the purge is coming
Emil will be fine as long as Todd is there
Yeah about that...
Todd ain't going anywhere before shipping TES 6.
Dazed, reeling, 'bout to break.
>gay as frick tribal tattoo
>le so quirky coffee cup
sad
explains a lot

Has Emil just been in a constant meltdown since Starfield's launch and even mainstream realizing that Bethesda has issues?
Well, Hines was already sacked and the only thing that is saving Emil's head is that he is Todd's bestie.
Once Todd retires he wont last a week in the job
Pete Hines is gone and Bethesda needs someone to get in petty twitter fights, Emil bravely took the position
my HERO

Wow, I guess the game doesn't suck after all because there was a design document.
Oh, wait. No. It still sucks.
does he think this invalidates the criticism of his game? if anything, not having docs was at least an excuse for why some aspects turned out so bad. now he doesn't have the excuse and it's clear the story/quests/world building just suck because he's a bad writer

forgot pic
Good on him for losing weight.
Guy is still a talentless c**t
>tattoo on back of hand
not listening to whatever this moron says
Emil needs to get demoted and get a tard wrangler.
emil! people aren't hating on you for not having design documentation! they're hating on you because your writing sucks, and they're using every excuse they can to shit on you! and you deserve it!
