Pretty sure he's just Todd's buddy from back in the day.
Also you have to remember he was the lead writer for multiple games that sold like gangbusters (they just so happened to do so in spite of their bad writing)
It's the same reason why there's so many hack writers in every other industry, if something works and proves successful, don't fix what isn't broken. Customers have already shown time and time again they aren't playing bethesda games for thoughtful writing
He did a GDC talk where he explicitly said he doesn't use design docs and that putting effort into quality writing was a waste because gamers just wanna pew pew. >Paid six figures to write for over 20 years, please understand
He's right, chud. Gamers have proven time and time again that they do not want gaming to be art. They don't want compelling narratives with important messages, they just "wanna pew pew".
If your definition of art is "compelling narratives with important messages" then yeah I don't want that homosexual shit, especially not from corporations who can't even get pew pew right anymore.
If you think not having a design doc for a project the scope of Starfield isn't a problem you might be moronic. That's literally 95% of the games problems. Every element made in isolation because nobody has a fricking clue what the project is ultimately supposed to be.
And yet for all peoples varied criticisms for Starfield the most universal one and the one that really killed it was the lack of anything interesting in the world and in particular making boring things that should have been interesting. A writing issue
funni carmack quote applies because carmack game doesn't try to be something else it's not
He's a professional writer, it's his whole damn job to reconcile the nature of vidya and good writing and it's especially relevant when the writing is half the damn reason for playing those shit RPGs.
He's right, chud. Gamers have proven time and time again that they do not want gaming to be art. They don't want compelling narratives with important messages, they just "wanna pew pew".
they absolutely want some level of quality to the writing, i'm replaying mass effect 2 and am shocked with how engaging the random dialogues with npcs are. it's actually shocking to see how much game writing has regressed in the last decade.
*insert le funny carmack quote here*
the problem is starfield actually does have a ton of writing/ story, it's just all awful because it's written by quest designers who made up the tone of each quest in a vacuum
Bungie fell for this. It’s not enough to be game of the year. They all want CoD money.
I think these execs need to realize that games, CoD, Madden/FIFA/2k, and MMOs are all essentially different industries
You know what this a good perspective if your making action or arcade games. this is a bad perspective if your making rpgs where players expect a narrative that's at least a little compelling or at least has effort put into it. this guy just admitted he hates rpgs and his job is writing for rpgs.
But Oblivion also had a shit story, and Skyrim sold millons. Obviously he isn't the problem here. The problem is clear, Starfield does not offer the open world people expect from Bethesda.
Nope. PatricianTV just hammered home why this game is utter shite from all angles. It’s like the fall of Babylon or season 8 game of thrones. Starfield is an unmitigated disaster of poor planning and design and incompetence
Why don't gamers understand that if you know how a game is made and accept that its really super hard, that knowledge makes a shitty game ACTUIALY really good.
Gamers are so entitled.
Stories in game don't necessarily have to be GOOD, they just have to be engaging enough to hook players in and move shit forward.
In an ideal world the gameplay would enhance the story and the story would enhance the gameplay.
But that requires a certain finesse that is honestly quite hard to cultivate.
Regardless, pretending like story has 0 impact and gets completely ignored by people playing games is just disingenuous bullshit.
>he's been writing shitty stories since Oblivion. SKYRIM was the pinnacle of bland, fallout 4 was atrocious ass and Shartfield was him trying to punch above his weight which failed miserably. Todd's never going to remove him though
>man goes to doctor, "i can't write my way out of a paper bag" >doctor says don't worry, read some work by pagliarulo, he will fix you up >man, with tears in his eyes...
It's funny watching Josh Sawyer's talk on FNV where he explicitly stresses the need for planning your choice driven narrative very early in development
?t=2332
>A lot of people look at the narrative in new vegas, and say, "how did you plan that stuff out?" and it's actually, I don't wanna say it's easy, but when you do it from the beginning, it's not especially hard. If you try to do it six months down the road? Forget about it.
Especially funny when you compare Emil and Saywer's talks in light of starfield
I mean that's just writing 101, have your major beats and basic characterizations planned out from the start then filling in the gaps becomes a matter of simply understanding the interactions.
No
I'm finally scratching that horrid itch in my brain and putting words to paper (even if it's just shite fanfic) and working out the theme and end state is the first thing even my shitty self did. If there's no goal then there is no build up and there's no gratification for the reader. It may be altered as time goes on but you can't just laissez faire something as dense as a novel or RPG. Shit has to move towards something.
The point is there are no good writers anymore. At least not in CRPGs.
It seems because the basics are too far away from them.
Oh and tv show writters appatently too.
kek reddit is shitting on Emil these past few days relentlessly. They called for him to quit, and Emil was seething and coping on twitter, he even wrote a giant wall of text
Same energy
Did they hire this prick solely because he had "liar" right there in his name?
Pretty sure he's just Todd's buddy from back in the day.

What did he do that’s so bad? Yes, Skyrim’s story was shit, but does he actually give telling dev interviews?
He did a GDC talk where he explicitly said he doesn't use design docs and that putting effort into quality writing was a waste because gamers just wanna pew pew.

Who told you that's what art is. Some of history's greatest paintings are landscapes.
>they just "wanna pew pew"
the pew pew fricking sucks shit in starfield, now stop talking like a gay
>chud
Stop larping as an SJW in order to defend this dogshit game, moron.
Well he doesn't but I'm sure that only forces the other wagies to cobble something resembling a design doc by themselves
If he hated design docs so much, he could've just relegated the job to other producers and he could just sit back and bark orders at people.
No it’s that he’s dumb. He does the whole appear to be in charge and the people under you do the work and you pretend to get it.
Emil is a nepotism hire by the way. His father is half israeli and is a second cousin of Robert Altman.
Altman isn't israeli, important to mention that.
Lol, he was incredibly israeli
Go ahead and smash that Early Life arrow one time
Make sure you pick the right Robert Altman dumbass
It's almost like one is famous, b***h
Yeah well the one who owned Zenimax was israeli and is second cousins of Emil’s grandma
It’s like Dan Benioff.
Zenimax was paid money to have BGS exist so Emil could have a prominent job

its only regressed in the West.
most of the good Jap writers are still making good stories, and a very select few Euro game devs can sometimes make a good one.
*laughs in van buren*
>Gamers just wanna pew pew y'know, now let me do something else instead of doing what I'm paid for
Bungie fell for this. It’s not enough to be game of the year. They all want CoD money.

That's ultimately the problem with starfield, it's not really an open world game, and it suffers for that.
Starfield's biggest problem is that it's fricking BORING.
Bethesda games live and die on interesting settings. Starfields looks and IS fricking boring.
reminder that Far Harbor's writer Will Shen left Bethesda after Starfield. They are doomed
>Far Harbor
Oh wow the DLC that stole most of it's shit from mods and other shit? who fricking cares
I want compelling stories because I'm not a zoomer.
If I want compelling stories I read a book.
I did not care for Oblivion's dark brotherhood questline
Can we not guy 1 DAY WITHOUT WHINING ABOUT THE LATEST SHITTY AAA?
Nope. PatricianTV just hammered home why this game is utter shite from all angles. It’s like the fall of Babylon or season 8 game of thrones. Starfield is an unmitigated disaster of poor planning and design and incompetence

You need to touch grass.
You need to go back to plebbit
How do I go back to a place I've never been?

He's good friends with Todd so Todd will never get rid of him.
This is a cope, emil is moronic but the whole company is rotten and unlike others emil actually use to do good work
this guy?

Emil is a hack but gamers have proven countless times good stories go over their head, especially on Ganker.
Stories in game don't necessarily have to be GOOD, they just have to be engaging enough to hook players in and move shit forward.

Game devs deserve death threats, because it's the only form of audience feedback they seem to respect enough to read.
I hope they get a lot.
