Emulation Device

I'm curious what you guys use for emulation. I've always used a soft modded Wii with homebrew. I mainly play Snes, GameCube, Ps1, N64. I've been thinking about switching to a mini PC hooked up to my TV with wireless controllers so my setup is cleaner and i would be able to play Dreamcast and PS2 games

you would probably need some sort of vga adapter/splitter? they probably make something like that. I'm using a AUX to HDMI for my TV. I'd prefer to play on a CRT but don't have the space

I've had the 351 for a couple years now and played many games to completion. I've never had issues with emulating any consoles that the devices can handle given their specifications.

wiiVC versions of N64 games have more input lag than console but its not noticeable imo. Its also the best way to emulate N64 games since N64 emulation is still bad. The only downside is it doesn't have everything.

If it's PS1 and below, I use an Anbernic RG351MP, anything above that I usually do either real hardware or PC/Steam Deck emulation. I won't lie I kinda want to go back to the RG280M I used to have due to its form factor, but I hate dealing with OpenDingux nowadays.
I do wanna get a MiSTer but each time I'm ready to swallow the price tag, it's sold out. That, and I'm wondering if there'll be a 2.0 project that uses a different chip to combat the DE-10 Nano's power limits and availability.

I'm trying to slowly build a flashcart and ODE collection since I have most hardware I could reasonably care about, but since I so far only have one for GBA I rely on a few different machines.
I've got a PSP-3000 from 2012 or so that I like to use for PS1 eboots - especially JRPGs. I just prefer the handheld format for those. I also have a modded Wii, but I only use it for GameCube and SNES. Before I got the GBA flashcart last Black Friday, I had recently brought my original 3DSXL out of retirement for the Game Boy family libraries, since the screen size at original resolution seemed to be the same size as the original handheld screens, unlike my normal sized N3DS. Beyond that, any platform I either don't have, don't have a flashcart for, or don't currently have a way of hacking, I emulate on my PC. I vastly prefer using an existing device though, and the ones I use typically have native or near-native support for the libraries I play on them.

It's crazy how nowadays everything under the sun can run emulators out the wazoo, though now the issue is that people will spend days loading up their chosen devices with terabytes of full romsets and having their frontends set up to look pretty for social media, and then they don't show anything beyond title screens and first levels because they don't fricking play any of the games.

Wii is absolutely perfect for NES, SNES, SMS, SMD, Sega-CD, etc. Apparently GameCube isn't emulation on a Wii since it is basically built-in/native. You can even plug in the NES and SNES controllers from the Classic Edition consoles into your Wiimote for that extra authenticity. I wouldn't have ever been able to play some amazing games like Chrono Trigger and Snatcher in 240p on my CRT TV without my softmodded Wii.

Bullshit, all 3 Snes9x versions om wii, (gx,rx,tx) had annoying issues like performance, lag, glitches, and none of them properly handle the graphics fade in and fade outs in comparison to the original hardware.

Retroarch on Wii is also pretty much worthless outside of 1.7.9 to the point that they are hacking newer cores to it.

Ps1 emulation keeps gettin updated and recently they FINALLY fixed the scratchy sound by adding gaussian interpolation, but playrate is still stuttery as hell in recent builds of Wiistation.

Ah yeah forgot about those. I generally play handheld games on handhelds so I haven't messed with those in a very long time. I can't speak to mGBA's quality on Wii but I remember VBA wasn't great.

oh and also, the p is only used for vertical rows of pixels, not horizontal. The funny thing is that GBA's 240 wide pixels actually fits neatly into 720 wide at 3x, but because the Wii's 720 wide output results in pixels that are slightly skinnier than wide on a 4:3 TV, and far too wide on a 16:9 TV, there's no good way to scale them. that was also a nonstarter for me, personally. I know there's some hacks for the Game Boy Player on the GameCube people swear by but I have no idea how they tackled that problem as the GameCube has the same output resolution of 720x480

I don't have a special emulation device, I just use my PC. It seems better than any of the specialized devices, especially if you're using a LCD monitor, variable refresh rate is a practically essential feature. Runahead and frame delay let you have better latency than other devices. You have the most video output options for CRTS as well, either VGA or 15 khz with cheap hardware. For multiplayer you can use any combination of controllers. With a decent CPU you can even emulate the xbox, ps3, 360, and switch.
The only thing better for emulation might be the mister, but even then it's only for certain systems that it provides questionably small benefits. Sure my pc cost more than am mister, but I use it for other things too.

This may be a LOOONG shot, but I've return to play some shit on my pc long after updating my rig, it has a 4670k and 4060gpu and I don't remember dolphin doing this shit, every second or so there is a spike causing stutters and I don't remember this even using an old hd4870.
    Anyone has experienced something similar?

      Anonymous

Looks like shader compilation. Go into the graphic settings and play around with the shaders options (read the tooltips). The games will stutter when they create the shaders for the first time but if you set "compile shaders before starting", all the created shaders will load up before the game and will reduce the stutter to the minimum. Games will stutter every time the find a new graphic and create a shader out of it, what I usually do is if the game has an attrack mode, I let the game running for like 10 minutes so it creates as much shaders as it can without me even playing. That way it doesn't run like shit when I actually start playing.

        Anonymous

I already have the "compile shaders before starting" enabled, I've let the game sit still for 5+ minutes not doing anything in a closed room and the issue persists, pretty weird, suspecting some new shit on the latest version of the emulator or something on my system but everything else is closed.
Will try a different build, ancient builds and even other pc around to see if I can pinpoint the exact issue.
        Thanks anon

          Anonymous

yeah i've also experienced this. you have to go back to a much older version of dolphin to fix it. I have no idea how they made performance this much worse with the shader compilation, you can play a 10 year old build that runs most games near perfectly... and if you bring it up, well no, you're wrong, it's always been like that etc etc. it's weird gaslighting from the devs

      Anonymous

Change the renderer from Direct3D to Vulkan and select Hybrid Ubershaders, also don't compile shaders before staring as that takes a while to boot. Dolphin can also overclock the GC's CPU to remove native slowdown.

What kind of car can you get for $350?

        >it's not emulation it's fpga!!!!
        >oh if you want an emulation box try the mister 🙂
You marketing goons need to make up your mind.

Why is it marketing to mention using a mister in a thread full of people talking about the devices they use?

Notable for being the only hackable system that can run Yoshi's Island perfectly.

    windows 7,1964 emu,gens32 surreal,zsnes hack and nestopia.
i would use linux if the bastards at libretro didn't promote their shitty emu.
    >want to use just bsnes on linux : you can't there isn't a pacakage
    >want to use snes9x : there isn't one available but hey we have libretro snes9x,we don't have the needed files for most distros.
    >want to use fceux : was removed because...???? is old??.
    >want to use vba-m : we have mgba available for our 2024 distro,we don't have the latest build but we have mgba version 0.8
    >want to use pcsx-r : sorry was removed because is old
    >want to use duckstation : we can't because we received complains of developer so we can't include it.
    >want to use desmume : we don't have latest build on our updated distro but you can still use one of our builds is version 0.9.11
windows is shit when it comes to modern versions, and linux can't even be used for emulation like in the past because ???? .
forgot this one from a distro i got working with that libretro
    > want to use libretro : sorry you need to use the same roms that we used verfied by hash so you need to dump it yourself otherwise it won't detect the roms.

Wii (since 2009-10), now exclusively with my Wavebird I got from my dad for my 14-15th birthday, but I'm thinking of switching to my Steam Deck once I get a screen protector for it.

How stable are the ps1 and n64 games? I tried some n64 ones and they were either awful or just couldn't play them. I guess that ps1 games are even worse.

Playstation emulation on the Wii is quite decent at this point besides a few games not working, but it aint cut and dry, ita divided between WiiSX and Wiistation, the later has introduced 240p, interleaced mode for games like Tekken3, Force NTSC, many video filters and even Soumd interpolation, but sadly since a couple of versions has made the framerate (not gamespeed) become stuttery, and game compatibility is divided between Lightrec and new Dynarec, CHD files may crash the emulator, and certain games still dont work.

WiiSX has better compatibity but lacks all the video updates and interleaced games run worse.

N64 is worthless outside of VC.

I got my old PSP 3000 out of my attic recently and I've been using it for GB/SNES/PS1. It feels very strange to use it again because of the size of it, my phone is bigger than it is. I also can't help but treat it like a valuable artifact or some shit because I've got a ton of good memories with it. Kept me entertained on so many journeys on public transport.
