But anyway, just a warning to you guys to not keep the headset on too long, dont play on high volume or use speakers instead, and take good care of your ears. You do not want to live with this shit trust me.

No problem man, best time to switch what you're doing is right now.

I had the same a year ago after listening to music too loud. Abstain as much as possible (if not completely) from using headsets and ESPECIALLY EARBUDS. Do not use them for months. Let your ears heal on their own and make an appointment with your doctor. When I got tinnitus, I abstained from headset/earbuds religiously and it went away after a few weeks. In my naivety, I put on earbuds on the train again, and guess what, it flared up again. Now it's been like a year and I barely hear it anymore, because I minimized headset use. I just set my headphones to low and don't use them as often. Normally, I switch to speakers and occasionally to a headset if there is a nice song I like. Take a break every hour or so. Another problem is duration. If you use them all day, that's nonstop sound slamming at your eardrum. You need to take breaks. I don't use any white noise to drown it out, I think that actually works against your brain trying to figure out something is wrong.

I stopped using my headset a week ago after it started happening and looking into getting speakers, I'll never put on a headset again for the rest of my life if I don't off myself within the year.

The only good part is that my tinnitus is reactive, which means it's not a constant EEEEEEEEE all the time, it only flares up in response to certain sounds like fans and vacuums. I dont know if I'll be able to live with it either way but we'll see.

I was told it could be a tumor or an infection that got into my inner ear. Gave me some vitamins and I haven't heard from the doctor since. Sometimes you can ignore it, most of them time it's just a ringing sound that never ever ever stops. I was afraid I was crazy and just kinda dealt with it but I did finally see a Dr and well, I'm basically deaf in that ear except for the ringing

      Because it is?
That's the sound of technology around you. Frequencies of living things and etc. A sound you can hear from the fridge in the next room, from your plugged in laptop in standbuy, from plugged in TV's. I hear this too, everyone does. Tinnitus is louder and more annoying since people who have it have fricked their ears. I heard it once or twice in my life too when i was next to the speakers in a metal concert. Shit is brutal, had to listen to slow piano jazz on earphones so that i could focus away from the noise and go to sleep after i went home after the concert. Even saying this, tinnitus is not worth killing yourself over, you are bound to adapt to it sooner or later.

        Anonymous

You could have gotten it no matter what you did though, people get it who don't wear headphones at all. Musicians who play on loud as frick stages sometimes don't get it, it's pretty random.

        >That's the sound of technology around you.
Nah there's a difference. Sure, the fridge and shit make noise, but there are times when at random you will experience a higher pitch that is not there all the other times but still sounds like technology/power flowing. Idk if that's tinnitus or not, because it goes away, it doesn't hurt, and it's not insanely annoying to the point of being unable to sleep and shit.

You might be getting acute bouts of tinnitus from spikes in blood pressure, instead of chronic tinnitus from damage to the inner ear.

in-ear earbuds are the worst because they are the closest to your ear drums compared to all devices. Over-the-ear open headsets are best because the sounds leak outwards (that is why they are 'open'). However I got it from my open over the ear headset, so you still need to be careful.

No problem man, best time to switch what you're doing is right now.

      t. had it for over 4 years now

How did it start for you? Hope you're dealing with it alright after 4 years so far.

I have had Tinnitus for past 3 and a half years. I had same thoughts at the begining but trust me bro you'll get used to it.

I also played with headset full noise until I broke my laptops 3.5mm jack. But even though I didn't get tinnitus almost a year after I stopped playing that it probably had damaged me enough and one loud movie caused me to get it permanently in my right ear.

Here's what you do. Get a fan. When you go to sleep put the fan on. That is the only way I can sleep to this day. Once you stop focusing on the noise in couple months you won't hear it when you do normal every day things. But you just have to use a fan whenever you sleep so it masks the noise.

But yeah it sucks for the first year but trust me you'll get used to it. I did eventually.

Problem is, my tinnitus is reactive. If I put the fan on, it'll flare up trying to compete with the fan on making the louder noise. White noise doesnt seem to be good for me unlike people with the classic tinnitus.

Banana Phone was way ahead of its time hah, at least it's not like that for me or I'd be dead already.

Gotcha, I dont want to let my family know about this but I guess I'll have to. Expecting the 'I told you so' speech about having the headset on all the time. Thanks for telling me.

It started to show I would say around 2 years after regular headphone use. It wasn't that bad, but it was bad enough that it made it difficult to get to sleep easily. I pretty much discontinued headphone use entirely the instant I noticed it, and it went away in about a week maybe.

In just a week? That's some real quick recovery, never heard of it disappearing that fast.

          It's a kinda simple process to reduce tinnitus;
Play a song that has prominent drum snares that are not "de-essed", i.e the sound producer has no fricking idea what they are doing and didn't reduce the sibilance in the track

          is an example
Go into your realtek equalizer and reduce the 8k and 16k ranges until the tapping sensation in your ears when that sound plays is much less harsh
Then find a PC volume for you that doesn't leave you with tinnitus after a few hours of music. for me it's about 35-40, my headset is very loud though.
I started getting bad tinnitus a few years back and after doing what i just described, it's been reduced a whole lot.
Any track with drums is a potential nightmare for tinnitus if the person who did sound production for the track is awful at their job. Live show audio will sometimes do this too.

That's great that it worked for you, I think it's safer for me to just protect my ears from loud frequencies and wait it out.

I've lived my whole life with tinnitis. You'll survive. Also, there's been some developments for treatments with eat injections or whatever. So that's something for you to research on your own.

How bad is it for you? Is it constant, high noise?

            Anonymous

Yep, constant never ending high noise. You get used to it. Gets worse when my blood pressure raises or I run.

          >half
Half isn't a volume level, that could very well be extremely loud. It's not like the damn volume knob hurts you, if half is still too loud you're still getting ear damage.

          >She reassured me that It could go away in a few weeks.
Some conditions like ear infections and damage to the eardrum can cause ringing too. Once those heal the associated ringing also goes away. I think I damaged one of my eardrums when blowing my nose when I had a cold once. I heard a strange pop in that ear and then it started ringing, it took like a couple of weeks until the ringing went away completely.

Gotcha, I dont want to let my family know about this but I guess I'll have to. Expecting the 'I told you so' speech about having the headset on all the time. Thanks for telling me.

It gets worse with stress. When you're feeling good, your tinnitus will be much quieter and sometimes even unnoticeable. Shit still sucks though.

      Anonymous

Nope, just methods to make it bearable.

exactly. i've gotten rid of a bad case of it that was BAD and lasted months through simply realizing its psychosomatic and not even real kek.

You cant just think it's not real and it'll go away, not how it works.

        Anonymous

yes it is. look up psychosomatic illness. Dr. John Sarno. There's millions of people suffering from disabling pain/ailments that are literally entirely stemmed from their own brain.

Chronic back pain, fibromyalgia, and to most extent tinnitus and visual snow mostly all fall into this category. Basically your brain concocting ailments to distract you from horrific depression/stress. Anyone you've ever met who had chronic "bad back" is a prime example. The cure is out there if you do the research - and this is coming from a guy who was also suicidal over visual snow/tinnitus and had both pretty much evaporate but it took months to convince myself it was mental.

          Anonymous

Psychosomatic illnesses are real but tinnitus and visual snow aren't it. Stress manifests itself as physical pain such as headaches, chest pains, or other body soreness and pain. Very rarely as auditory and visual hallucinations which is what you're implying.

I have both tinnitus and visual snow from lots of drug usage and loud music shit is very real. All I can say is you get used to it OP.

How do I even check if I have tinnitus?
at night when I'm trying to sleep and it's all silent I can always hear a constant faint EEEEEEEEE but it's not loud enough to bother me, can't hear it during a normal day at all unless I enter someplace where everything is dead silent and then again in those cases the EEEEEEEEEE is not loud enough to make me want to kill myself or anything

You have a very mild case. It can get much, much worse than that. If it doesn't bother you no reason to stress, just make sure you don't damage your hearing any further and you're good.

            >I have both tinnitus and visual snow from lots of drug usage and loud music shit is very real.
You are an absolute moron but no its not. Nobody in the 70s taking brown acid ever got years long conditions from taking drugs. You just are an anxious, underperforming loser and your brain has you convinced you have all these "problems" to distract you from the real problem of your life, that you most likely are a burnout without a good job, gf, etc. Read the book I mentioned if you ever want to feel better, otherwise just keep convincing yourself you have visual snow cause your mind was too opened from mushrooms.

Source - had visual snow as a child at 7, before ever doing any drugs.

For anyone who has debilitating tinnitus try reading this book. This is what cured mine. It takes a leap of faith but realize its a disorder of the mind, not in the ear. It's a psychosomatic disorder.

Think about it, why all throughout the civil war, WW1, WW2, Vietnam, before any soldiers were ever given earplugs, did nobody in medial journals ever make note of this "ringing in the ears" phenomenon? Even when they were standing next to muskets and cannons with no protection?

Seems odd that tinnitus is almost entirely an internet-era disorder and it affects almost everyone, much like "anxiety" nowadays. If you have an open mind and are desperate for a cure read about John Sarno and TMS and give it a try. You ain't gonna find a cure anywhere else that's for damn sure.

I've had it since I was a child and I did nothing to precipitate it - it can be one of those unlucky things. I used to need a radio to fall asleep, but after a couple of years, your mind gets used to it and its effect on you is reduced. I can fall asleep in silence now. Seriously nothing to end your life over, I guarantee it's not as bad as you think.

Ever since I was a child I thought it was completely normal to hear a constant ringing sound in my ears, I've discovered it's actually a "problem" a few years ago.
I don't even know how it feels like to NOT hear that ringing all the time, fortunately though I hear it only when I either focus on it or when shit around me is at low volume/silent.

You can lose hearing without getting tinnitus, there are borderline deaf people with complete silence and kids who go to a concert once and start hearing lawnmowers 24/7, it just depends how much nerve damage you get.

people say tinnitus is permanent but I often get bad fits of tinnitus after a long motorcycle ride or after gigs (frick drums they're way too loud). Generally I just wait it out and in 5 days its either gone or it has been reduced to the point where I only ear it when I'm really paying attention hard to it.

have had tinnitus since i can remember, never was exposed to loud noises, always have listened to everything at an adequate volume (in fact when i was in school i would think i was cool for listening to music as quiet as possible)
heard it could have something to do with your jaw, which could make sense in my case because moving my jaw around changes how my tinnitus sounds

All the nerves are connected. I think mine also has to do with my jaw though I just got used to it. My hearing is perfect otherwise in both ears otherwise.
