The worst part is that for bosses or quest/story battles the game doesn't default to your advantage and flips a coin instead.
I started replaying this [and then dropped it again because it's a shit game lol] but the difficulty outside of the first two bosses is non-existent. Just strike first on mobs, you can wipe them in one round 95% of the time
The game is a balancing nightmare. What I did on my most recent playthrough is played the protag like a classic protag without the abillity to learn skills. That way he has to rely on regular attack/guns and items. Got a lot more mileage out of the game that way but powercreep is still too strong for your demons and not even half way through they're one-rounding all the bosses. The problem is that enemies have no fricking HP, regular enemies have player team HP values and die to a light breeze.

That's how it works in every single megaten game with field encounters (SMT V, Persona 3-5)... you either rape them on the first turn, or they ambush you and you get raped instead

That's how it works in every megaten. The ones with field encounters you can get advantage by sneaking on enemies, the ones without you need to level agillity or get mind's eye just so you aren't ambushed and Giga fricked.
4 is actually one of the easiest games to not get fricked by enemy advantage because MC dying is not game over for some bizarre reason.
Yeah, that's what I meant. The games with the field enemies at least let you have a shot at the advantage, the older games it's more of a flip of a coin that you can turn in your favor with either skills or agi/luc stat iirc

Karns are busted in IV so you don't have to think about resistances except when you get ambushed
Yeah they're completely broken. There's a reason why you only get them at lvl 70 or something in Apocalypse.
You get them a lot earlier than that, they're just incredibly expensive to cast without high affinity
Yeah sorry it was lvl 50, not 70. Still way fricking earlier than IV. Not that IV would be that much harder without it.
They're strong, but you'll probably can get one off per fight in the early to mid game, considering they each cost 50 MP to cast
