I hated him when DP&platinum came out but looking back he's one of the best somehow. maybe it's just been so long it's some form of light nostalgia. I replayed platinum a while ago and found him pretty fun as a rival.

That only works when the character is actually interesting, Silver showed up and I'd roll my eyes because my Totodile/Croconaw/Feraligatr would run him over and he'd cry about "muh weakness" again. He wasn't a cool obstacle to overcome, he was just an annoyance. Blue was fun, he had actual charm and bants, Silver was a crybaby

He is such a self centered shithead that despite Team Plasma having dozens of not hundreds of Purrloin he expected a Grunt to know about one specific one obtained 5 years ago off hand. This was after Team Plasma imploded by the way.
He has such high standards of his past self that he feels guilt for not being able to protect his sister before having his own Pokémon. At the same time though, despite all his rage and hatred for Team Plasma he asks the Player to do the heavy lifting when destroying them.

Of all the completely autistic things that were forced to be patterns after the first game, the one thing that SHOULD have been a pattern kept after RGBY was that your rival was good enough to achieve champion status.
