Deaths have always resulted in you going to your last save or a cybernetic station though
it always went to respawn, the boss was the first time it went to last save

ME1's autosaves are really sparse in a couple places. There's one save in the mission you find Liara and it's at the start.

auto-save is only present at key locations so that you don't frick yourself over with your quicksaves. If you soft-lock, then you have an auto-save to return to instead of having to restart the game (or load your hard save from the conclusion of last play session)
