Does this game ever get any good? I'm currently in the 2nd zone/jungle and the game seems too basic. Also characters don't interact at all.

Supposedly the fun part is drawing the map using the stylus but I think the game kinda sucks tbh senpai.
The thing is my first "Etrian Odyssey" game was Labyrinth of Touhou 2. The game fills the map for you, you have so many characters, many builds, the game has everything, so I now that I'm actually playing EO 1 it feels so lacking that I kinda feel like dropping the game.
This game plays too much like your average JRPG, just auto attack, I'm not even sure you have AOE damage. If 2 and 3 aren't better then I'm not sure I will be worth continuing this
EO1 is pretty barebones compared to a lot of other dungeon crawlers, and you gotta invest in the AoE skills if you want AoE damage

that's absurdly generous. the game doesn't have an actual dungeon display, just the map. it has to fill it in for you or the game wouldn't have graphics

You are playing that games biggest inspiration, said by the devs themselves. The thing is the first few EOs are a bit archaic, of course it feels like that. They do get a lot better with each entry. And, while I like LoT2, EO is still much better in a lot of areas.

I have only really played EOs 3 through 5, but 5 feels the most similar to LoT2 to me. The bosses are mechanically interesting from the get go, and figuring out how your party can deal with their shit felt kinda similar to changing up your party to deal with different bosses in LoT2, to me at least.
One thing from LoT2 I really wish more games would do is how easy it is to change your party (at least until the Plus Disk stuff) and how the game feels designed around that.

That's like going from Ocarina of Time to NES Zelda, of course it's gonna feel lame in comparison to what you've played before.
That's not to say that EO1 isn't worth playing, but honestly if you aren't enjoying it just drop it and try one of the later games instead.

If you're new to the series, I'd recommend starting with EO4 or EO2U.

Making your own map isn't that great of a game mechanic, automapping lets you focus on battles and party building. If you want to draw you are probably autistic.

I dunno, I'm only on floor b5 in the first stratum and I'm having a decent enough time of it. Mapping is fun. I don't get why my protector with a bunch of points in defense skills has been outdamaging my landsknecht who has a bunch in sword and attack up and a better weapon though, and my dark hunter feels mostly useless since her binds and poison seem to never proc and not actually do anything to stop enemies from just attacking really hard.

I love e-girls and I mean real ones not hebehags and himukai draws them godly, but the actual games bored me fast, mildly fun and played a lot of V (got limited preorder Eirik edition) but never beat it since I got bored. Decent enough to play once though. I remember pirating 3?) on the DS years ago and quickly got bored. The exploration part with danger drives you well at first but after a few dungeons it feels the same and I stopped.
I think it playing more like pokemon rather than having dedicated characters with personality and a story does it in for me, but to mention unanimated 2d sprites. I don't mind dungeon diving I can enjoy it enough but I do much prefer an overworld map to jump between rather than a menu to dive between floors that are unconnected to each other.

No that's just bullshit that's been spouted since the game was released. The damage calculation is just different from the original game and you are hitting for what was end game damage in the original by the 3rd stratum.
Invest more in your damage skills, the enemy health pools had to be bloated to compensate for how strong most offensive classes are and even then skills like Dark Hunter's Ecstacy, War Magus' Ailing Slash, Gunner's Point Blank charged shots, Alchemist's compression-boosted aoe items, etc. will tear bosses apart. Also make use of the blind ailment if you're using a sniper, it's effective and few enemies are resistant to it.

Investing in a skill only to find out it's worthless is one of the hallmarks of the dungeon crawler genre. To look it up beforehand would be sacrilege to the very foundations of the medium
Probably a good idea to look up what each class does or can eventually do yeah. Some classes kinda fight for the same spot (like Ninja and Wildling in 3, who both want to use the summon spot). Generally speaking there are very few classes you just plain want to avoid, and even those have their uses (Farmer in 3).
You should understand that EO is like the dragon quest of dungeon crawlers. It doesnt color outside the lines but it does the basics very well, and back when it was released that meant a lot more than it does now. EO3 is still the greatest game of all time for me though.

I disagree - the twist contextualizes the setting of the entire series, so having it revealed far earlier than it should be ruins the gravitas of the final stratum's reveal.

Didn't have much trouble with Scylla but couldn't beat the superboss because my party was status effect and bind focused and the fricker was straight up immune to almost all of them and I didn't feel like remaking my entire party and grinding to 90s just to fight that 1 homosexual.
