eternal's gameplay isn't absolutely perfect and couldn't be improved upon or anything but it's fun as frick and unique
there's a learning curve but people mistake "there are certain things you have to do if you want to win" with "gameplay is one note." Eternal has you mix and matching literally every single weapon and piece of equipment in your arsenal even at endgame, it's neat.

they did this with FF7R too but somehow doom just kind of gels with Nintendo stuff, the retro pedigree, the historical impact, the tongue in cheek gameplay-first approach that was so simple in the originals that anyone can pick them up and play them, the long history of in-jokes and self-referencing
DOOM never needed any coattailing, not least of all nu-DOOM that is actually quite successful.
It's just that epic tw*TTer moments like that are good publicity among the mentally ill demographic that permeates that platform. Hey, at least we get some DoomguyXSamus out of it.
